- Marvel and DC films have quite different visual styles, in this video we explain why.

one thing for dc is that they are really creative with their color grading style, like the combination of green, blue, and yellow red with their unique camera cinematography proportion you can tell thats a dc film
I say marvel and dc should just keep doing their own things. Both shouldn’t try to be each other. Take the flash movie for example, it tried to do marvel’s “cg things” and end up with weird visuals.
The Flash had weird visuals because of hundreads of reshoots and it ended up not using the original already finished product, the final , the ending everything was supposed to different
That flash movie was basically a marvel movie in every aspect

DC always aimed for the cinematic shots and cinematic luts
u said it, marvel film cameras are flat, there is no depth. every cut, every camera Angel is predictable. the cgi is so clean that you can see the edges that separates the characters and green screen.
but in batman 2022 for example the camera is dirty, u can sense objects because of Lens focus. instead of green screen, they used monitors as background static of gotham. the cgi they used for the last 10 minutes is realistic and they've choosed a perfect color palette for movie.
In conclusion, dc movies tend to have a cinematic approach rather than being an amusement park.
So the movies are better because the camera is dirty? Your statement sounds little stupid. How's it flat? They literally have good aesthetics shots throughout different movies. Black panther, guardian of the Galaxy, just to bend free examples.
Although i would say these past 3 to 4 years where i would agree with your statement. But before that they were on to if their game.
And if marvel movies are predictable so are DC. What makes it so difference just because it's a lot mysterious? If i was a dc fan watching the Batman i would've guessed what happened but it didn't take the enjoyment out of the movie.
What I'm saying is saying the movie is predictable is a invalid reason and meaningless. Along with being that you can see the "edges" because the cgi so clean? Like what? You not making any sense...
@@kishoratono1567 even my response to this will be meaningless and stupid, there's no point in this argument
@@GabrielFernandez-es5nc then there's no point for that comment too then....
@@kishoratono1567 well i needed to clarify my statement, and yes the lens needs to be dirty. i will give you a DC sample, nolan's dark knight trilogy has no tune in colour Palette there is too much white color scheme during the fight scene between bane and batman.
the camera is simple, something beyone flat no creativity in camera angles. just two dudes throwing punches at each other
@@kishoratono1567 FYI a lot of the movies camera men actively try to get the right amount of dirt on their camera lens. Go do your research on why they do.
As a Marvel Fan i admittedly judge their movies as having no colors, bland colors and the costumes looking like they were all made by the same person and the predictability of shots, not to mention how they all incorporate tech into their skillsets that it kinda made the characters not have distinction to one another. I noticed later films tried to change that but time will tell if the cinematography would improve. Although this may not be related but Marvel's ability to make such memorable , relatable, and compelling stories are what made the franchise such a success and when you watch something that hooks you to the characters and their stories, you kinda don't care how it looks in camera, what matters is still the story.
Dc films just always hit harder for me. Felt more like directors with visions even if they sometimes failed.
honestly im a big marvel fan but the movies never really hit me as hard as DC's movies and thats wether I liked it or not it just actually felt like something. Only spidermans movies really got to me.
Exactly....DC directors are visionaries even tho they sometimes fail.....well said...
Yeah you might be right
Eight of the 15 DCEU films failed to make a profit. That's more than a 50% rate of failure. Marvel has 33 films. The Marvels is it's only flop. That's a 3.03% failure rate. That's a huge difference, which is why the MCU made a vastly larger profit per film than the DC movies did.
@@BodDiv just because a movie fails to make profit doesnt really mean anything to me.. alot of great films have failed to make profits. Im just speaking for myself on why i like dc films over marvel, how much $ the films make wasnt a factor or care for me
The thing about DC is that not all of their characters r supposed to be dark and gloomy like Batman.
So so true... I want the next Superman (2025) film to be bright and have a different tone that separates him from Batman
But comic book superman isnt necessarily bright and pretty either
Dc heroes have always been a little edgy@@justanormalguy4816
Not all DC movies follow a dark tone. For example, while Batman follows a dark tone, Man of Steel follows a bluish tone, Suicide Squad follows a colorful dark tone, and Zack Snyder's Justice League follows a dark-brown tone, they are not all the same.
@@hasanrafi4837 i wouldn't say color grading is what soley decides a movie tone, tone is a the authors feeling as well,,,so while peacemaker and suicide squad color grading is Bright there tone is still dark- comedy, which is still dark
@@rtd4413 Peacemaker and suicide squad didn't have a dark tone. lol
DC always been the most creative and a hardcore risk taker, DCEU was a failure but their Elseworld films are way better and impactful than what someof the DCEu and MCU put together, even though there are masterpieces like iron man 1, ZSJL,Man of steel, captain America winter soldier etc
this is just criticizing the airport scene in civil war. the russo's said the color scheme for that scene was chosen to demonstrate the characters moving more into moral grey as they fought each other.
Being darker doesn't means its cinematic lol. it'll make a stereotype among new creators
IT WAS NOT ABOUT BEING DARK

how?
DC Elseworld movies >>>>>>whole DCEU trash
Nothing but facts
The batman amazing film
just depends who is making the film, not neccesarily the company
I didn't noticed it until now but DC films do feel alot more like the vision of their creators
from way back with Superman 1978 to the Dark Knight trilogy
even now with the Wonder Woman movies, Zack Snyder's trilogy, The Batman, Joker, The Suicide Squad and the many more films that came before and are to to come with James Gunn's new upcoming DCU with a heavy focus on creator's vision
don't get me wrong I am not in any shape or form talking about critical or commercial success especially when in comparison to Marvel I am talking about the feel and tone which always varies and feels distinct from project to project and clearlt reflects the Director's take on these characters and this world
and with exceptions like all the MCU Phase 1 movies or James Gunn's the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy or some offshots like Multiverse of Madness with Sam Raimi
I don't see a creator's vision coming out of these movies they all just.... blend in
like watching all 3 MCU Spider Man movies gave me absolutely no idea on Jon Watts's vision as a director unlike say Jon Favreau with his Iron Man
This is why Marvel Animations is about to destroy the MCU.
Not entirely... but when it comes to content? Marvel Animations is about to make the MCU look like a complete and utter peasant.
Why?
Becuase that brand has the keys to have creative freedom! Look at how amazing X-Men '97 looks with its art style and visual aesthetic.
Something the MCU barely tries to achieve for their films.
No cinematic creativity.
Even though Marvel Animations will serve the MCU in some form or way! They have the keys to do whatever they want and create whatever they want with full creative vision while not having the MCU breathe down their neck.
Not being restricted.
The mcu is obviously restricted.
@@youngspecial64 if it gives me great marvel cartoons and marvel cartoons sequels... sure

Blade was Marvel's first hit.
It came before them, but it wasn't a hit at the time.
@@4D1Characterror It was a huge hit at the time, especially for an r-rated movie. Were you even born because it sounds like you weren't there.
@@BrimsHL it was not a HUGE hit. It didn't lose money. But people weren't talking about it like Xmen. Buzz wasn't crazy. The Matrix came about a year later and got huge numbers for an r rated movie. Blade only kinda got past blockbuster status.
@@4D1Characterror it was still a hit and a hit for an R rated movie. The only reason Spider-Man and X-Men made more was because they were PG-13. Everybody and their mother was talking about it. Including white people. Obviously you have no idea what was going on at the time.
@@BrimsHL it was the first r rated movie I saw in theaters. I loved the movie. I know there was no one talking about it because other than my brother who saw it with me, there was no one talking about it around me, and no big buzz about it on TV.
Compared to other movies of the 90s- True Lies Die Hard 3, Schindler's List, The Rock, it didn't get much attention or as much money.
Great video. You highlighted points that I as a movie watcher don't typically think about in regard to various filmmaking styles. It's kinda like how the first 4 Harry Potter films have bright coloring and r more adventurous and light-hearted, but the 5th and 6th have very dark lighting with more tension. Marvel films have been nominated for/have won Oscars, so they are also capable of being serious and reach Scorcese's standard like some DC films have.
Let's see how the New DC will deal with this ,,can they win audience plus creators trust with their lots of projects to come in future ?? Time will tell
I heard that James Gunn is honning in on creative vision. So hopefully, the films will try to be cinema to a great extent.
It's so Sad How the DCEU is getting better in the Art of Cinema, they have ditch the DCAU. I really Hope a New DCAU (not the Tomorrowverse) and do more Justice on it!
Superman will start it, i believe.
0:07 CORRECTION: a 'Theme Park film' would be Pirates of the Caribbean & the Haunted Mansion, both, LITERALLY based on rides at Disney World and Disneyland! Tisk Tisk, Mr. Scorsese.
Yeah because there aren't any theme parks based on marvel. Ahem ahem Universal studios
DC is also more realistic
WOWW I thought the complete opposite
I wouldn’t agree. Both can be either unrealistic or realistic. Daredevil is more “realistic”, Avengers is more unrealistic. The Batman is more realistic, SnyderCut is more unrealistic
They are both about superheroes 😂
Right so a guy flying at the speed of sound is realistic cool ( not dissing DC I love superman) I do prefer marvel but most stuff after endgame hasn’t been good
Ya flying without any forces and a lasse that lights up and makes you tell the truth pretty realistic 💀 bruh superhero movies supposed to be unrealistic lol
Who made the thumbnail? 😂
Most DC movies feel like they're in a post apocalyptic earth where even during the day it seems dark but they say its waaay easier to edit dark footage than any other way of filming
But then again I live under a rock (metaphorically speaking) so what do I know
Simple Comparison:
Marvel Is a Family Friendly Audience
DC Is a Adult Mature Audience
I think this is hard to judge when you have so many directors, writers, production designers and Directors of Photography that are involved.
Superman's my favorite DC character. Do I like Man of Steel? Yes. Do I think Superman needs to be all dark and depressed? No. He's a guy wearing red and blue spandex with undies over his pants and a freakin cape. How can you take yourself THAT seriously while wearing that? Notice that Marvel characters with really elaborate and colorful costumes tend to take themselves less seriously. Like Iron Man and Spider-Man. And then there's Captain America. Yeah he's wearing the American flag, but he's more serious than his counterparts because he's a soldier. He's not a rich boy in an armor or a high school kid in spandex. He's a soldier, and those are his uniform. It's a symbol from a time where the US was a beacon of hope, and the people in the Marvel universe look to Captain America for hope because that's what he represents by wearing red, white and blue. So just because a movie looks darker doesn't mean it's better.
You miss the point. DC movies are called dark not because of the colour pallet, but because of the tone. marvel may be blowing up entire civilisation, but they also crack stupid jokes every 10 minutes, so it's hard to take them seriously.
Sometimes when i'm watching marvel movies ,i feel like if i'm watching a cutscene from a video game
Civil war is darker than most other with the same cast, what makes stuff darker isn't just the colour palette or the amount of death, but rather the focus on the darker aspects of human psychology...while most dc movies are on the same level of dark as Marvel ones, DC ones are generally more mature while Marvel is kinda more kid friendly (doesn't mean adults can't enjoy it), and tbh, most X men films would beat both Marvel and DC at being mature...but hey, that's just a theory, a film theory
There are some really good points this video makes, even though I am admittedly more a Marvel fan than a DC fan. BUT I need to argue a little about the CGI point they tried to make. DC is grittier but my favorite movies and two of the most filled with CGI DC movies are Wonder Woman and Aqua Man. My best friend loves Shazam but that is so much CGI too. I’d say they are equal, Marvel and DC.
DCU plots are majorly Noir, MCU plots are Thrillers. It will be interesting to see how James Gunn approaches Noir films
Give Martin a watchmen graphic novel
Already a legend made a movie based on that but it doesn't completely recognized sadly
@@dedP00L the director 's cut. The theatrical was mid
I despise the MCU and DCEU but I love comic book films like The Batman, Joker, and Blade. Cinematic universes are overrated.
X-MEN was shown as a trailer at the first showing of BLADE. Blade was first.
why are you using a ai sexualized photo of black widow in the thumbnail?
I know it’s so disgusting
honestly, that's why I liked marvel projects like Loki, both doctor strange films, Avengers AoU, Wandavision, and the netflix shows. They have a visual style that's different from the standard cookie cutter MCU projects. Even the Iron Man films had a lot of dirty and raw shots that made it feel real while still keeping the superhero tone up. The first Thor films had a lot of dutch angles which I honestly liked but many didn't. AoU, a film criticized by many for absolutely no reason at all, has a lot of beautiful shots that reflect the tone of the scene or conversations. The dinner party, the scenes with ultron, the banters between banner and tony, all of it have colour gradings that reflect the tone. The Iron Man vs Hulk fight also had a lot of cool shots that made it iconic. The winter soldier too, had a lot of raw shots that made it feel a lot more grounded than say Civil War. I think, ultimately, the reason why Marvel doesn't incorporate cool cinematography is due to the audience. Some appreciate darker tones, some prefer light, some prefer wider shots, some prefer more blurred shots. Instead of trying to please everyone with these, they please no one and try to keep it simple to focus more on the quality of the shot rather than the way its shot.
You'll really see a more creative direction from Phase 1 and Phase 4, the so called black sheep of the Marvel films.
It's fascinating how much solely on visuals we perceive things differently.
MCU have dark and thoughtful storyline like Winter Soilder and Civil War.
In WS the scene where Zola describes people ironically giving away there privacy to protect that very thing , gave me chills. Honestly, it's haunting to imagine being surrounded by nothing other than machine and it tells you how it's manipulating humans into submission that even by their own will.
But I think most tend to forgot this critical scene bcs it is shot in generic style. If that same Zola scene was shot in The Batman style, with intricate camera dynamic and immersive perspective & sound then it would hv impacted lot strongly. Creating a lasting impression.
By the way, Deadpool and Wolverine looks pretty good. The director did insist on shooting in real life location which is paying off.
So I guess , Feige might from now on let director hv more say.
I hope if MK movie gets made they bring Matt Reeve or a director with tasteful cinematography bcs the contrast of white suit with dark background and a gaint Moon glowing behind MK will be iconic. But it can only be done with accomplished cinematographer.
For Martin both of them look the same😂
Id say Marvel definitely aims more for the “futuristic sci fi” theme in its art direction while DC tries to be more gritty and dark. Marvel’s visuals are cleaner and more refined to communicate the idea of a society superior to our own, while DC’s visuals are typically dirtier and more muted to convey that this world is less of a technological utopia and more of a grimy, almost dystopian society where life might actually be worse than it is irl. Its less about cool flashy effects and more about raw realistic action
DC are money makers, Marvel too...the best for DC are Superman I and II, Batman 1989 and Batman Returns, TDK trilogy, Snyder's JL trilogy, Joker, The Suicide Squad, The Batman...W's all around...Gunn's DCU coming too
Bro wtf, you added a special sponsor segment just to roast marvel
Not the dc people totally dissing marvel 😂 I love dc’s style of filming and respect the grind 😊 for me, I’d rather watch a marvel movie just because I like some of the character’s stories better & bc I actually do like the grand, almost fake looking entrances of the characters. But I really love the idea of actually making a camera lenses dirty for a shot. I also noticed marvel’s “bland” visual style did make it feel more relatable, and I liked that part of mcu movies. Although, many of the fight scenes were very immersive and not at all bland. Overall, I like both styles of filming and I think both franchises are very successful. (Just the dissing was a little unprofessional, unless there is a reason im missing, which I probably am… I’m only going off of this video)
I hope the upcoming Dc cinematic universe movies are visually good

Isn't The Flash a DC movie?
I see you're not into the superhero genre so much, so the answer to your question is overwhelmingly yes.
@@jeanp.5929Thank you. The Flash is not a dark and moody film as portrayed here and neither is Wonderwoman. When the presenter says DC movies are darker/whatever do they really mean Batman as thinking about it Superman films weren't that dark and moody either.

Its why im worried James Gunn will flatten Dc's visual lingo
The first major marvel hit was Blade, and it was dark
personally, i like the more colorful approach marvel took, but the excessive cg has gotta stop
While DC struggles narratively, their cinematography, costume design and musical scores have always been superior to Marvel in my opinion.
DC falls flat when it assumes it is Marvel's competition. That's when they release trash like BvS and Justice League.
After making WATCHMEN, that shoulve been the point they realized how special they really are. I don't understand why they lowered themselves after Man of Steel to do those "power ranger amusement park" films.
Thank God, Matt Reeves has revived that DC flamboyance. THE BATMAN has brought back that feeling i got from WATCHMEN.
Most DC movies always looked wonky to me and awkward with the exception of movies like the Dark Knight. Which was phenomenal.
why
DC so strong
to the people saying marvel is shallow, this whole video is nothing but a shallow explaination for people who have no clue or havent seen any super hero movies
that is all changing, james gunn a marvel director has already made a movie unlike previous dc movies 'suicide squad'
I prefer DC
One question, why the heck use a shot (0:50) from Joss Whedon's Justice League??? That's literally the most Marvel movie DC has. That's not even considered canon by the fans. That single shot looks atrocious compared to the beautiful photography of Fabian Wagner in ZSJL.
scroces wrote a superhero flm already. it was taxi driver.
Whoever works in light for DC should make a little bit lighter it's fucking hard to see what the fuck is happening in my cheap ass phone 👁️👃👁️

Always love DC for some reason...now i know why
primarily it is a marketing decision first: marvel targets kids, while DC goes for young adults of all ages 😁😁
Oh
I will always love DC films
I would like to point out the difference between Marvel and DC as clear as day: Do NOT compare the MCU with art house DC flicks. If comparison is what you want, try Blade 1998, original XMen and Spiderman Trilogies, Iron man 1(only that one), Deadpool, Logan , Spiderverse etc. MCU movies except Iron Man 1 are not worth comparing, they're simply made to be time passer cinema. The Infinity Saga managed to be the greatest cinematic experiences and perfected the "formula". Even the formula went stale after a while. There are tons of darker and deeper stories from the comics in Marvel begging to be adapted, but sadly the Disney overlords will never get the guts to adapt those, not to mention "THE MESSAGE". I would also point out that the failure of the DCEU is what led to the films like Joker and THE Batman to be made. If a fair comparison has to be made, go compare Snyderverse films and other post-Snyder DCEU films: in that case atleast Marvel would have a competitive edge
Great mask catgirl. Greatest mask in the history of films
DC fails cos they rarely give any other heroes a chance and when they fail when they try one like Green Lantern, they go back to Batman.
Marvel succeeds from comic book failure by giving different studios the right to make films. Hence, Fox Sony and Paramount were able to introduce different characters. 70+ characters have been introduced to live action. Whilst DC only has 15+
Also, every time they introduce batman they fail to give us his sidekicks.
Why does Joker have his own film, its completely unnecessary

So DC deliberately makes them bad then cry that their movies aren't performing well 😂
That "bland airport scene" doesn't suddenly "look like it's happening in Mexico" because you adopt a moronic U.S. Film industry cliché.
Marvels problem isn't that the movies look too clean, we were all emersed in endgame and when spiderman first appeared. The only issue with marvel is its new age social justice storylines its forcing on everyone. That is what pulls us out of the universe and makes us realize its just a Hollywood pandering movie.
Short answer is that Marvel is good and DC pictures are bad .
Marvel makes better movies, while DC makes better cartoons
Disney is scared to be dark dc is to dark
DC always make movements in slow motion. A hero walks, slow motion. A hero jumps, slow motion. A hero attacks, slow motion. Group of heroes poses in front of the camera? Slow motion. annoying slow motion.

I know I catch hate with this comment :) , but I have to say it. Marvel target audience are kids and teenagers. DC films at least try to cater to adults with their brooding, dark, provocative themes and story lines. DC is also generally less WOKE and has less slap stick comedy. My two cents...
0:53 Answer: Trying too hard and going WAY OVER budget. AVENGERS cost, alarmingly, only $200M. JUSTICE LEAGUE cost $300M, and was beaten by BLACK PANTHER (one superhero) and DEADPOOL, of all people! Deadpool was created to fight X-FORCE!!!
