vballmusicGod yep ... just roll the Bass up a tad, roll the Treb and Mids BACK a few notches and then play with your Presence and dial in the room and then EQ the sound again ...
I've had this amp for 4 years now and it plays like a boss. People here are hating on Line6 just to hate and I bet 90% of you haven't played this amp. I don't really use all the effects, made my own channels and it's great when playing gigs cause you don't need a damn pedal board when you want some delay or reverb on your leads. Fantastic amp and loud as hell.
@@willchaney8931 contact line 6 they should have service centers/ authorized to help only issue is, are any near you .. can't be any fun to ship this heavy ass mofo anywhere...
Just keep in mind people who watch this, the master volume is EVERYTHING in shaping your distorted tones on this amp. This video doesn't really show off how good it sounds because he is cranking the channel volume and not the master. You need to crank the master like 3/4 and then turn the channel volume up to like half for this thing to sound like a tube amp. Otherwise you are just whistlin dixie..
I've heard this amp in real life and it sounded much better. Turn down the treble a bit man. Or get a better mic to record into. This is very harsh sounding. Tube amps are supposed to be warm. It's what they're known for.
I'd like to point out it has a digital preamp, and the two 12ax7 are in the phase Inverter spot to push the power amp tubes. I actually run my helix through the power amp of one of these. It sounds incredible.
This review does nothing for this amp. I have the 112 version and I've got a really solid, thick hard rock tone. Think BLS, This review is rubbish and Line 6 should sue them,
@10thFulcrum you should be able to get rid of it by holding down the TAP button and turn the reverb knob clockwise, a green light by the D button should indicate that the noise gate is ON. Your guitar's pickups might also be the problem, some pickups are more sensitive to static, and so could your cable.
Bullshit, All my guitars are active and i get tones that the audience loves. This fool don't know what tone is. What the hell do they have tubes in that thing for, and then put that crappy effects engine on top for ? Where the hell is the bass, mid and treble knobs?
got my Spider 212 Bogner last May with the FBV SB. I can't say enough how amazing this amp continues to stun audiences when they see what I'm playing through. Def try this one before you go out & buy a $1600 Vox, VK, or any other boutique combo. A++++++
I have this amp, its awesome...the only complaint I have is the default channel volumes. Someone who plugs into this amp for the first time is bound to have the crap scared out of them due to the volume...the channel volumes are nearly maxed by default. Its easy to fix, just turn each of them down and save...but it shouldnt be like that to begin with. Other than that, I love this amp
yes, solid state amps often have huge circuit boards, whereas the last amp I built barely used a board at all! the compents are bigger, but theres no where near the quantity, which means you can string things "point to point", between valves and pots.
iv played this amp in the shop (considering that i only have a 15 watt starter amp at the moment) this amp amazed me with the clarity of sound and the amount of built ins it has
After playing guitar for 35+ years I've learned that no matter how good or bad an amp is, everyone has different opinions. For 25 years I was a tube only guy. I've pretty much owned everything from AC30's to Marshalls, Fenders, Peavy, Mesa, Carvin, Roland, Hughes-Kettner. You name I've either used one or owned one. Everyone that has a tube amp ends up trying to get more gain by using distortion and compression to the point it may as well be a digital amp.
What I really like about line 6 is that you can customise and program your own sounds.Dont have to mess around finding sounds they are already there programmed in.
I am basing it on this video, but I have had a Line 6 Spider amp before, and I think that it is safe to say that Line 6 does not make good amps. If you want a really good tubey roar sound for a small budget, I highly suggest a Vox Valvetronix hybrid amp. It has a tube in it, and I can get it to sound like many high-quality tube amps, including a Dumble and a JCM 800.
I'm willing to bet 75% of these people saying that this amplifier is bad haven't even played it. It's an absolutely fantastic piece of equipment. I've had it near on 6 years and i've only recently needed to replace with the tubes, even after a fair amount of use. Some tones i will admit aren't great, but the better outweigh the bad by far. This amplifier is a sound purchase for anyone looking to move up from a practice amp to something more affordable than going straight to a Half/Full stack.
I bought this amp recently.. and even though I wasnt a Line6 fan before.... this amp got me and today I am a proud owner.. I must agree with a few guys here, that it sounds really much better in real life, this vid gives you a preview, but seriously go to your local store and try it out if you have the chance :)
I had a Spider Valve 112 that was one of my favorite amps. Good punch with the bogner designed tube section, combined with the array of sounds from Line 6 modeling. And the 1x12 was crazy loud, I can’t imagine the 2x12!!😵
I went into the store and played several valve amps, I ended up buying a Fender Deluxe, its small, class A and sounds awesome, but to get a decent tones you need to have stomp boxes. So although it cost a little less than the Spider, once you add half a dozen foot pedals, a power supply, extra cables etc, your up to Mesa Boogie money. I'm going back today and swapping it for the spider valve. Ask yourself do you want to become a sound engineer or play guitar ? For me the latter !
well anyone who has done any research knows that the Spider series is Line 6's beginner amp line and their Vetta series is their proline. I have a vetta II 300 watt combo and it is the best amp I have ever owned. If line 6 ever made a vetta valveamp line It would be BEASTLY. The truth is most of you people here on yt have never even seen or heard of the vetta series, yet you still criticize line 6. And their new pods are the GOLD STANDARD in recording nowadays. You kids are so silly
I really have never gotten why people hate on line 6 amps so much. If you want something with alot of options on it to play around with then they're a really great option. I picked up my line 6 spider II 210 for about 200 bucks and it's a great practice amp. I'd never gig with it or anything, but it's really nice to have a few effects to play around with.
Are you talking about directly from your guitar? If so, dont because it sounds far worse there, but if your talking about connected to the back of the amp thru the preamp in and preamp out (the same as a effects loop) then yes it should go there. Its amazing, you will love it. I got a Boss EQ for 100 dollars which is a 7band EQ and it does the job.
Spidervalve is great for metal on guitars with humbuckers. I've used it through an Epiphone G-400 and it sounds sharp and clear. That presence knob works wonders!!!
i have discovered with my spider 2 that you can use the headphone socket as line out and plug it into the input of another amp, i have plugged it into a yamaha GA-10 and its great for my bedroom etc, using reverb and whatever effects you want playing through the other practice amp, with or without the treble/bass of the little amp, brings with it a new tone, and if you have a problem with volume of spider you dont have to fear death everytime you alter it,cos you can set it then alter GA-10! great!
My pedal was 100 dollars. But if you mean amp, I bought the Spider Valve HD100 head and the matching cab. It was i think 800 for head and 600 for cab. Its great though. I cant believe i liked this amp at all before the EQ, it sounds way better. I also recently modded it with the SVpre, which is a mod from strymon that many owners have done. Its great.
I couldn't agree more! The amount of gain you can squeeze out of this thing is insane. I got the newer version then the one that's being reviewed. So loud and so much power for 40 watts. There is only one concern that i have. I use my FBV Foot switch Express pedal with this thing and there is a slight delay when switching between channels. Not sure if it's the cable that connects the foot switch itself
I find it ironic that i had to watch an ad for this vid and it was the hotels.com commercial where he's training his fellow coworker on how to wait. lol.
I hate almost all my friends "spider" amps but i found the spider valve 212 and the thing sounds great. and has amazing bottom end even at REALLY low volumes.
@MrTomWeeks93 If you're influenced by someones sounds though, you can load up the artist presets and then use that as a starting point to modify until you get a tone that's got a bit more of you in it. Great for those with no effects and not knowing where to start.
The cost was covered because it was under warranty. I think it was very inexpensive, because it was just a little piece. I would contact Line 6 because I took it to a licenced Line 6 rep. If you are any where near a larger city, you will find plenty of licenced repair people. Line 6 make still take care of it because it is a know problem according to the repairman that fixed mine. I had to drive about 90 miles, so hopefully you are closer to a rep.
wow dude those are badass, but the clean on a fender is more or less untouched in my opinion, perfect glassy tone. Thanks for giving me a new perspective.
i agree, but i think he made those hissing sounds. when he is creating a tone you can hear the hissing coming through the more he messes with the knobs.
I Think that the most of the people that have seen this video thinks this thing sucks! Buts it is not the amp that suck, its the recording, This Is A Amp You Must Test Self Before You Can Deside!
@Jovanchero the 212 comes with $300 worth of Celestion vintage 30 speakers so there's that....if you're playing gigs or looking to blow the roof off the place...get the HD100...if you're playing in your room or garage the 212 Mkii is MORE than enough.....40 watts of tube power is A LOT!
The line 6 Bogner (Valve series) is NOT a modeling amp it just takes the digital effects and modeling of the popular Line 6 spider series and combines it with the Bogner all-tube amplification, it even says that at 1:17 in the video...
I went to a Michael Angelo Batio clinic and he says he plays through ANYTHING, because he uses an overdrive pedal for his sound. He used a DIME amp when I saw him because it was handy. He also said he will sound the same no matter what amp or guitar he plays through, he is not beholding to any real brands, but he does dig his custom Dean guitars for their playability and pickups...after endorsing many others in the past.
This amp sounds great in person.I know its hard to tell from a youtube video, but I have a Blackstar HT40 combo and have stopped using it because this amp sounds so good.
I am happy with this combo, I have the esp eclipse on top of the line 6 spider valve 112 with the short board and I have really had great results. ESP fukin rocks the house, very under rated guitars
ive actually never heard the fender's distortion but while were in the business of naming of amps for distortion my top 3 are Laney, Mesa Boogie, or Peavey. In my opinion, but ill look up the fender now that youve got me curious.
i think that the head version of this amp sounds better cause its on 100watts with 4 6l6 so it means that the sound goes through 6 tubes instead of 4 so it gives you more tube sound!!
yup just make sure you shut off the presets equilizer before you try playing them. You should get the Line6 pedal board with the Wah, its extremely great to have with the amp.
Actually I will sell this 212 with the FVB shortboard for 600,and no shipping is what I meant to say.You cant beat that deal, this stuff is brand new and alot more than 600 in the exact same condition as what you would buy in the store for both.
Yea i hear that. I got a Line 6 Spider III 212 right now and i do use it to play live. Its not a horrible amp. Ive gotten good compliments. I'm in a cover band and it does give me a lot of different tones, but im not exactally 100% satisified with it and im not a huge fan of the tone either. It works for now till i can afford a good tube amp. If i can find one in good condition i will pick myself up a JCM800, thats my dream amp.
maybe on the channels A-C you really cant get the nice heavy sound and vibe from the tubes but when he plays the metal pre set he came up with on channel D, i think you can hear a nice vibe and good sound from the tubes. this is a really good amp. i play on one. i like them alot...
you can take your head to gigs as opposed to some massive combo. if you're playing gigs where the headliner provides the cab... and if you're the headliner then you should take the cab, but that's not too often.
@sumopub Just because it's a line 6 does not mean it sucks, you just listen to that video and you know it's an awesome amp. It's pricey, but reallllyyy great!
One of the best kept secrets is the Bugera 1960 and the 1990 Tube amps. They sound just like a Marshall but at 1/4 of the cost. 449.00 for a 120 Watt Tube head.
Well, all I can say is that I have this Amp, and in my opinion, it rocks. SO POWERFUL. But I Usually play through Solid state stuff, so this was a step up for me. :)
the valve is a tube amp, tube amps have a warmer, thicker richer sound, trust me you'll hear a great difference, if you ever get the chance try and get the tube amp.
tubes. definantly tube amps are louder because they rely on actual tubes instead of little computer chips for sound. and they have a better feel to them too. and what i mean by that is that they get more gain when you hit the strings harder. tube amps are basically amazing :]
Paul has mentioned in past Guitar World CD Roms that he can't play exact songs due to copyright issues but that he plays similar parts that recall specific songs. In this case at 10:14 he's playing a part that is meant to be reminiscent of the intro to Pink Floyd's "Run Like Hell" which makes use of the same style of echo and moving chords over a drone bass line.
Just by the by, his pickup's output must be huge cos my guitars don't sound half as "gainy" with those settings. Just another demonstration of how versatile this amp is. Love it
Very powerful amp for the guitarist with a not too big wallet do to speak. The alternative is the Spider Valve HD100 which is a head with 100watts tube power. To get the max out of this amp I use a modified 1960a speakercabinet along with a Ibanez prestige equipped with EMG's. It's durable! rigid! However, keep in mind that it's basically a computer with a tube amp so be careful! Sound: Profound, heavy, superb modelling! For effect I use external because the amp effects aren't that good.
I use the EQ pedal ALL the time. you dont really need to change it even when switching from distortion to clean, it still improves the sound. It depends what genre your playing. for rock, keep the mids up and maybe up the treble, it really depends on what you think sounds good, but its far better then the normal EQ on the amp. Put the EQ thru the effects loop by the way. For a metal tone, drop the mids and up the bass and treble and your rockin.
Really nice review. I really like listening to Paul. Line 6 makes some of the best digital amps out there... I've played Marshals Tubes, Fenders, Peavey and all the rest. My go to amp is always a Line 6 and the new ones keep getting better and better with more features. This Valve 212 has some sweet features and you can get an insane amount of different tones/sounds/effects out of this...
@LessthanJake14 haha, forgot that, you're right mate :D they haven't built many amps. but the defects you're talking about don't seem to be a problem of every single amp of the model series. could have been bad luck!
The only saving grace to this amp is the power amp section and speakers. I use it to power my pod hd 500 and am happy with the results. I have the 212 so I put a 3/4 back on it to help tighten up the low end.
@marcometalico Price point isn't really the biggest factor in amp tone. For instance, a friend just played a blues set using nothing but a guitar plugged straight into a stock Fender Pro Jr. The tone was to die for. That's a $300 amp with two knobs and a power switch and I've heard amps 5+ times the price that didn't sound that good. Regardless of the price issue, the main point was that the SV has a full tube complement and a Bogner designed circuit. The Vetta has no glass and is digital.
trust me this thing sounds SOOOOOOO much better in person
vballmusicGod yep ... just roll the Bass up a tad, roll the Treb and Mids BACK a few notches and then play with your Presence and dial in the room and then EQ the sound again ...

Basically it adds higher frequency allowing you to have a crisper sound
This amp sounds great in person.I know its hard to tell from a youtube video, but I have a Blackstar HT40 combo and have stopped using it because this amp sounds so good.
I am happy with this combo, I have the esp eclipse on top of the line 6 spider valve 112 with the short board and I have really had great results. ESP fukin rocks the house, very under rated guitars
this guy is one increadable guitar player
ive actually never heard the fender's distortion but while were in the business of naming of amps for distortion my top 3 are Laney, Mesa Boogie, or Peavey. In my opinion, but ill look up the fender now that youve got me curious.
@WheresMySpaceButton Ok, I have googled it and read about it. Now I am enlightened. I now know what an audio interface is:-) Thanks.
i played that amp at a store, it is a very amazing amp for what i think, and it is very VERY loud, much louder than a normal line 6.
@ImMoriahNicole Thanks a lot,ill order today my Line 6 Valve 212.Yhe im planing buying the old one too ;)
Thanks for replay a appreciate that!
i think that the head version of this amp sounds better cause its on 100watts with 4 6l6 so it means that the sound goes through 6 tubes instead of 4 so it gives you more tube sound!!
yup just make sure you shut off the presets equilizer before you try playing them. You should get the Line6 pedal board with the Wah, its extremely great to have with the amp.
its really a great sounding amp, we have it over at the local studio and MAN! i could sit there for 6 hours just playing XD
Actually I will sell this 212 with the FVB shortboard for 600,and no shipping is what I meant to say.You cant beat that deal, this stuff is brand new and alot more than 600 in the exact same condition as what you would buy in the store for both.
i have this amp, and i must say it is AMAZING!
I have it and it´s amazing! It can play very LOUD!
YES. Buy this amp.
2 quick questions.
1) how good is the sustain on this beauty?
2) Do i need to buy a pedal for maximum distortion or is it perfect by itself?
i know right i played one at the local music store and it's amazing im savin up for it right now
One of the best kept secrets is the Bugera 1960 and the 1990 Tube amps. They sound just like a Marshall but at 1/4 of the cost. 449.00 for a 120 Watt Tube head.
@nmcclure79 It's a Spider Valve.
The "Valve" is in there for a reason.
@NUR1317 it gets pretty damn loud and if u hook it to cabs then watch out, nice surround sound
Well, all I can say is that I have this Amp, and in my opinion, it rocks. SO POWERFUL.
But I Usually play through Solid state stuff, so this was a step up for me. :)
the valve is a tube amp, tube amps have a warmer, thicker richer sound, trust me you'll hear a great difference, if you ever get the chance try and get the tube amp.
tubes. definantly
tube amps are louder because they rely on actual tubes instead of little computer chips for sound.
and they have a better feel to them too. and what i mean by that is that they get more gain when you hit the strings harder.
tube amps are basically amazing :]
Love it
wow, i'm sold.
Line 6 spiders are pretty good, but I really like the Peavey Vypyr. If you're looking for a modeling amplifier, I recommend the vypyr.
brilliant improvising in the begining!
@YFZ450Xkid the microphone picks up more highs than your ear, so it sounds a lot more saturated (aka with more gain)
