Poor Bizet who died without knowing the success of this Opera. Now it's the opera which is the most plays in the world. It is so sad this poor artists who can't have success and glory in their life but the recognizance come after their death...

Thanks! We do care. I saw Amsellem often when she was a student in the Merola Program at SF Opera in the late '90's. Outstanding voice and presence. I have memorized most of the libretto after hearing the opera many times. The best production was by Pierre Ponelle at SFO. Brilliant producer. He worked with Kurt Adler, a symbiosis of operatic genius!
That's the thing about music, about opera, about art... You don't have to speak that language to understand what is all about. And that why I love it so much. Bravo. 💛
Absolutely! When Sesame Street cribbed off Carmen with their animated short in the 70's or 80's, it was clear the story was about an orange with a rubber band for a mouth who shrieked so fiercely of love that its face literally flew off! Truly a relatable story as old as time itself, universally understandable regardless of ones native tongue.
That may be true for some orchestral works, but knowing at least the libretto enhances the experience greatly, eg. La Boheme 2 act winter scene, Buterfly aria last scene, etc. Try finding a subtitled performance and at the second third hearing u will appreciate the difference.
I had a wonderful French teacher when I was 13 or 14, and she let us listen to this wonderful opera. We analyzed the libretto, which may seem very advanced but in fact the French in Carmen isn't so difficult. Ever since then I have loved this opera. I met an old school mate who doesn't listen to classical music, but he said that he loved Carmen because of this gifted teacher. His parents never introduced him to opera. He said that he always "hums" lyrics from Carmen even though he has forgotten what they mean. I love when childhood memories really stick to you. And carmen is full of hits!

Fun fact: I’m playing this to a store full of people. At my work we’re allowed to play family-friendly music and I’ve been shuffling indie pop for the last six hours and wanted something calmer. I do like opera but, only ever listen to Tosca or La Bohème, then I was like “wait isn’t there an opera called Carmen everyone is always talking about?” And searched it. This is a good opera!
CARMEN is a musical masterpiece but hardly a "family friendly" story. Its all about illicit sex, tragic fate and violent death(and includes on-stage smoking!). However, its sung in French so everyone hums along with the wonderful music .If you want "family friendly" go to Mozart's "Magic Flute" (Die Zauberflote)- really...
I'm glad you shared this high level music with folks who probably would not listen to opera otherwise! No one needs to know the gritty plot details - it's still family friendly!
it kinda makes sens that the authors were recognized after their death. Before, the opera was canceled because Carmen was so disturbing in her role that people leaved the opera and screamed at her, even the womans were shocked by her attitude just the first second she sings. Womans weren't supposed to act like that, she was so rebellious and free to do whatever she wanted, and of course to have a relationship with someone before the marriage, which was unacceptable. But that's what makes the Opera so interesting.
