  • Yeoford was a quaint, but very busy station, for both passengers and freight trains. It was also popular with steam train buffs, as this Standard 8mm cine film from the 1950’s shows. The train would branch off and follow the River Yeo, some 25 miles to Barnstaple. It was known as the Tarka Line.

Exclusive archive footage taken from 1940 - 60, of steam trains and the humble DMUs, show the beauty of Dartmoor, come rain, shine or snow. The DVD PLYMOUTH TO EXETER - THE SOUTHERNWAY is available from our website.

The line from Barnstaple to Ilfracombe should never have been closed and should be short listed for reopening.

Wasn’t it dual tracks in some places in 60s

Think most of the line was dual track, I believe Lapford was single track from what I have found online the platforms are staggered each side of the A377 road bridge.

Barnstaple railway station 🚉 honestly now has a single track since perhaps 🤔 1991 because it is pointless for the trains 🚊 to run north of Barnstaple to Bideford via Instow and Barnstaple to Ilfracombe via Braunton. 😄
