I remember him from playing Aquaman in Smallville but he absolutely did the Reacher title justice this year. Well done sir.
Yea, honestly don't know what they were thinking with Tom Cruise in that role.
I only saw him in blue mountain state which he was amazing as Thad and then in the HBO max series as hawk or whatever. Wasn’t sure what to expect in reacher but was pleasantly surprised at how well he played the role and how hooked I was on the series.

This is why I gave up on dreams of acting and settled down instead. I was young and primed to go with no attachments. But I had enough clarity to realize what it would cost me to pursue those dreams after seeing others try and I decided that it just wouldn't be worth it to me in the end. I might not be rich or famous now but I have a wife, 2 kids, a house, and I'm proud of it all.
People will always criticize a choice like this but Jesus says if you love your life you will loose it and if you hate your life you shal keep it into eternal
Forget the "American dream." Jesus offers us something so much better - and real. God bless you!

I gave acting up as well and have worked towards these things for the past five years and have not made any leeway. I’ll have a degree this year. I should have a masters next year. I may go to nursing school, but I have not moved on from my desire to act and play music. But the Industry is so jaded that I don’t want to be part of that. As a veteran, I struggle with civilians because they’re so lazy and they are all about me me myself and I. I moved on thinking it was the right thing to do and I still haven’t crossed any of these lines for myself and the housing market is only getting worse and employers don’t want to pay anybody anything
"Never giving us a chance to slow down" is the sentence that really stuck with me.

I hope you never get cancer internally so you need external chemo therapy. That is one of the reasons people hate therapists and therapy. No, not all of it but a lot of it is new age BS and platitudes and, just like you just wrote, generalizations. Not to mention the fact that therapy, at least the kind of therapy Hollyweird talks about is nothing but talking and the therapist asking you over and over, "And how did that make you feel". Talking about and getting your problems out in the open is 90% of therapy but do you really need to pay someone $50, $100 and in some cases, $500 and $1000 an hour ??? Not completely knocking therapy, it has helped some people. All I am saying is that like everything else in life you have very few real, genuine people who want to help and then a shit tone of scum bags who are just looking to make a $ or worse of the worse, sleep with their patients and even those that do want to help, all they can give you are platitudes like the one you wrote and speaking of platitudes. Here's one you might like. "If you fail to plan, you're planing to fail !" Sounds profound, like all platitudes but means little to nothing.
One final note on therapy. Did you know that psychiatry and psychology have existed for over 100 years and in that time, exactly zero patients have been cured. NOT A SINGLE PATIENT HAS BEEN CURED !!!!!! Patients are given coping mechanisms, either mental exercises or drugs or a combination of both, which neither are cures but a way to minimize their affliction so they can try and lead a relatively "normal" life but not a single person in over 100 years has ever said, "Thanks Doc ! I'm cured" I equate it this way. If you break your leg. A doctor will set the bone, put your leg in a cast and in 6 to 8 weeks, roughly, you will be back to almost or fairly normal. If you go see a therapist with a broken leg, he/she will give you a crutch and drugs for the pain but they will not cure you !!!

@@Superman679 There is such thing as mental health, it's just a really dangerous field to go swimming in. Some psychologists are healers. I haven't heard of a a single psychiatrist who wasn't shatbit. But in the end, it depends on being able to see a spade for a spade and not calling it 'the only solution and everyone and everything else is a dog and a cult and insane and I wish they'd die or be thrown in a wood chipper'.

@@DerDudelinoit’s awesome if you’re happy. LOTS of people in life think that those things will MAKE you happy. So they ignore all parts of life until achieve and achieve some more only to be miserable. Tom Brady and other athletes say the same thing. That they ignored their life to chase money and status only to get there and be sad and lonely. He’s lucky he had kids to tell him he wasn’t himself anymore.
I'm nowhere near the top of my field, but this resonates with me. I think some ppl buy into the success/money/fame/happinness myth more than others and it's sad because they waste their lives chasing something that will never make them cotent.

This guy was the PERFECT pick for Reacher. He did a super great job (the whole cast did) but I was so glad to see the "actual" character from the book. Kudos. And kudos for being so honest about mental health.

I didn't think Tom Cruise did a bad job. Alan was much better. But the show doesn't excel just because of him. The only BAD part of the show was Bruce McGill as mayor Teale. He was terrible in this role. Watched the show 5 times already
@@Bad_Moon_Rising I agree that Tom Cruise didn't do a "bad" Reacher, but Alan absolutely fits the character to a T, where Tom Cruise didn't. And yes, all tv shows need a WHOLe great cast not just one good one. Like the cast of Bones, NCIS, Criminal Minds etc. etc.

Do you know who’s impressive in that story? The therapist, who was just doing his job, offered treatment options and suddenly had a 6‘2, 250 lbs Richardson freaking out and swearing in his office. That guy kept his cool. That’s impressive because there’s no way there was enough pillows in his office to decompress that way.

Tremendous actor. Loved him playing the smart, dumb comedy roles. It's even cooler to see that he is a deep individual and not a vapid Hollywood clone. More power to him and let's see him in some blockbuster movies.

That's cool to read from someone who knows the character, when I saw the series on amazon i had to watch it because I like this type of show/movie...I saw the movie and read about the character after that and saw ppl complaining about the 5'6'' thing which still Cruise did a decent job....anyway it was cool to read that this version was accurate...that's hard to come buy w/ adaptations. I've heard Ritchson described as a "great golden retriever of a man"... 😲😄 The more I see of him, the more accurate it seems.
Tyson Fury talked about this same kind of thing after winning the heavyweight belt. He got to the top and realized there's nothing after. His journey from almost killing himself while doing massive amounts of drugs to getting clean and winning the belt back is so inspiring. Hearing Alan have to deal with his journey and overcome the darkness is so good to hear.
Thank you Michael for allowing Alan to share this with us. He is my favorite character in BMS and he's incredible as Jack Reacher.

He is happy, he just realized that he didn't need to keep doing it to keep being happy. Now that he is filthy rich he can do other things.
but that's not to say that money won't make you happy, it literally will make you happy because money means you can afford to seek medical care, you can afford to take care of your aging parents, you can afford to no be stressed out about paying bills, about needing food, or fixing your car if it breaks down. Money Does buy happiness, but it does not mean you'll be happy all time, you'll still have problems but you won't be as unhappy as you were when you had no money. Money literally does buy happiness.

The problem is not being rich by itself. But being rich by aiming at the future. You should try to conquer $ while doing what you like, being yourself and not sacrificing too much of your here-and-now in order to achieve some ideal goal. Money by itself only buy protection (shelter, food, medic) but not happiness. I can buy entertainment: Video games, travels, hookers, false friends, but its all just serotonin, its not real and it wont fulfill long. First one need to find himself/herself and only then seek things outwards, otherwise its a trap. Thats what he is trying to say imo.

Alan is legit and really brave to come out and say what so many are terrified to reveal. And, as a reader of all the Jack Reacher books, Alan is perfect in the role.
What he's talking about pertains to more than Hollywood. A lot of people, myself included, reached the pinnacle of their careers. The dream jobs. You fight and claw and scrape to make it to the top, and by the time you finally make it, there's no time to sit back and smell the roses. Everybody I met on the path that I'd aspired to be were all miserable. Something has to change.

Hello Alan. I have been a therapist for 20 years. Because of role models like you men who would normally reject or make fun of therapy have been seeking treatment. I'm talking cops, fire fighters, military, athletes, doctors. I had one firefighter tell me that he openly talks with buddies at the station how therapy has been helping him and his marriage. I truly believe that the stigma of therapy is shrinking because people like you are so willing to talk about wanting to get better. Thank you.
I think it was nice he mentioned that he went BACK after his meltdown with the therapist. A lot of people may have thought, "well, can't go back to them now."

One of them may benefit from it. Good therapy is not a scam. It has helped millions of people. Talking with family and friends can help enormously with some persons but sometimes that is not enough and a professional is needed to help.

This episode was SOOOOOO good. Alan was so open and honest about his life experiences and his recent job experience that it was extremely refreshing. I was a huge fan before but now, I will hands down watch ANYTHING this man is affiliated with.

I can relate. Once I realized I was set for life, that my family didn't have anything to worry about and we could get anything we wanted it there was also this kind of loneliness and emptiness at the same time. I've told myself many times "is this all there is to it?" but I know I shouldn't complain.

When he said "bi-polar" that really made everything else he said hit harder than it already would have.
No one is more dedicated, passionate, or gives more of themselves into something (often to very unhealthy degrees) than someone on the Manic end of the bi-polar experience. So, it's all that much more crushing when reality or especially the Depressive end comes and hits you like a freight train.
What he was relating, in general, can happen to anybody, but the extremes of bi-polar make it even more brutal.
Good for him for making his way upward and onward. Keep it up, brother.
12 days ago I barely knew Alan and his work but now I'm a huge fan of him. He seems like have a really deep mindset about life itself. He nailed Reacher. I hope for more successfull seasons on amazon of Reacher.

I'm sharing this with my son. It gets me emotional. I really applaud Alan Ritchson for sharing this.
My son learned he has bipolar a couple of years ago, around the age of 25. He is 28, in therapy, is taking care of himself, he is working with his doctor with medication. My son has an amazing career. He has payed it forward and helps his employees if he sees signs of depression, bipolar, mental illness... He is starting a group to mentor those in the company who have nowhere to go. The men he has helped into therapy and supported through their ups and downs are paying it forward to mentor those who are struggling and show a strong man can ask for help. They are following my son's example, even though some still worry about the stigma, they are being brave and decided to help others. I could have lost my son a few times along the way, I didn't know what he was dealing with. How low his lows were. But I'm so proud of him for being a man and seeing a psychiatrist, a psychologist, seeking out others who need help. Men like Alan Ritchson, and my son, are brave, they are helping to take away the stigma for other men who need therapy. They are taking away the shame of mental illness.
The only bad thing is there are so many bad doctors out there that don’t care . A lot will not accept medicare

@@Mimi-74 I'm sorry to hear that, but can I tell you a small bit of input? The real problem you're likely having with insurance isn't that private healthcare is better than public, it's that when you were healthy enough to work, you weren't as dependent on insurance to function.
I know a lot of people hear that and really want to argue just how much they used their private healthcare, but it's not the same. Using an HMO or PPO around your work schedule means that you had the options to at least put things off or schedule them around your work. The coverage you needed was only as urgent and present as those problems which, most of the time, could be put off. Now that you're injured/disabled, you have omnipresent problems that dictate more of your life.
Without knowing if you have either Medicaid or Medicare, it's a bit hard to say for sure how bad the public insurance you have is (I'm on Medicaid and it's *not* great; it's better than nothing - and my previous PPO - but Medicare is *much, much* better) but hopefully, you're advocating for expanding public healthcare, because it's critical to the people who have it.

This was a really great conversation, beginning to end.
After my ex left me nearly 10 yrs ago, I had a lot of struggles. Having gotten through a number of hard years at first, I realized that I was happier NOT pushing for the high end in everything. I started living a more modest lifestyle but pursuing the things I wanted to do over the THINGS I had been made to think I was supposed to want to do. I found more happiness in doing the actions of what I enjoyed over doing the actions that was going to push me to the upper most top. I'm just an average blue collar guy, so while it may not sound like much coming from me, I had a big impact on my overall happiness. I realized, even though I never got "to the top", that once you got there, there was nothing else. As the old saying goings, its not the destination but the journey.

@@SPBAli_Apex I know that. It's not just 8n Hollywood that there are ppl willing, even eager, to trash your dreams. Not to mention parasites looking to leach off someone's success. When you push to get on top, you have no where else to go and have many chasing you to take your place, while you're looking back at all the things you missed out on because you were racing to get to the top.

ADHD > Depression, it's all linked and evil. But JUST because I have these issues doesn't mean i'm going to just lay down and feel sorry for myself. depression is a hell hole which you shouldn't dwell around... when you fall in there you might never get out. thanks for understanding though, mental health needs to be understood better by society. it's all very real

So so true, insight only people in there 40’s and above typically have. One of the most painful things in life is watching your kids grow up. Time is the only thing you can’t make more of!!

I wasn’t overly impressed with Titans but when they introduced Hawk and Dove I gave it a chance and enjoyed it, Hawk was a complex character who really kept me engaged.

I vividly remember the day I was told I have PTSD, I felt a great sense of relief but also a huge dread because I knew what was wrong but I also knew I had a bunch of work in front of me just to get back to being able to function day to day. I admire Alan for being man enough to be public with his diagnosis it makes it easier for people like me to build an understanding support system with understanding people around me.

I had a straight male actor friend there, needless to say, against his consent, was drugged and s/assaulted by a well known male producer. It left him jaded & he left HW as well. He was starting to do rather well in his career so it was sad to see somone who came so far and quit because he couldn't dissociate his experience with the rest of the "industry". And Hollywood is unfortunately rife with those kinds of stories. Dime a dozen. I saw too much of it.. that it became pervasive to me, as I was working in it myself. I was just a little older and wiser, and paid mind to guard my heart. Most people don't do that. Most people will do ANYTHING to be famous. I hate that environment.

3:48 this is how I felt too when I got checked out a long time ago. I felt defensive and uncertain what any of it meant, and I don’t want to get onto medicine, but the thing is there are things happening in our brains that sometimes benefit from some correction. It helped me a lot getting professional help, not just with doctors but therapy. There’s nothing wrong with it, what helped me the most was seeking professional therapy from fellow Christians. Hope it helps you too if you are somehow reading this comment. You aren’t alone
Damn, here I am, some guy that looks at a guy like Alan and goes “he’s got it all figured out, I wish I had his life” then I get to listen to him open up and discover we have so much in common and are battling the same demons.
but being 6 ft, generally seen as attractive, 200 lbs, good physic, tons of money and reaching all the goals you wanted in life..... and realize that there wasn't anything beyond "Everything you wanted in life" once you literally already got there, ain't so bad...
@@adolphgracius9996 idk man, sure he had his cards dealt right and also worked hard to get to where he is. But one need to figure out what makes ones happy. Money is always a way to get to happiness. Not the end goal/product itself. Being depressed and possibly blowing your own brains out meant that even if you have your cards dealt right, doesn't mean jack shit in that situation

I watched the first season of Reacher...and that was really my first introduction to Alan Ritchson. I have since seen him in other things...but I have just recently started listening to some of his interviews. He is GREAT in interviews and comes across as likeable and "real". I am going to have to check out whatever channel it was that he mentioned doing.
Not only is he a humble dude but he’s also a massive human being. He was outstanding in Reacher and his other minor roles were equally as phenomenal.

Yeah it's heartbreaking to watch my brother struggle with bipolar, even worse on Medicaid. He has gone through so many medications that don't work and has no motivation or will to live (thankfully he's not suicidal)

I really think that Alan has been your best guest to date, what and honest, emotional interview. Totally loved this guy in Reacher. I've never read the books, but after seeing this interview, he's about as real a person you can get. So refreshing to hear him talk about this.
For anyone dealing with bipolar, I’ve had a lot of friends with that diagnosis and the ones that seem to heal are the ones that learn to understand/process their emotions. Your mind will find a way to get it out if you don’t. It seems medication can help you out of a rough patch but it won’t deal with the root cause.
He's a brave guy, not alot of ppl would be able to talk about stuff like this (you're not weak if u dont share these thoughts/experiences either btw everyone has their own way) &he doesn't seem like the type either.. always came across as this a type friendly jock kinda guy with everything put together.. good to hear he's out of the dark place.
