In this episode, we are exploring the city of LUCKNOW in INDIA! A city rich with history, and an even richer cuisine. You’ll find the city is dotted with tons of delicious INDIAN STREET FOOD - and today we’ll be showing the best spots in Lucknow’s Chowk and beyond.
We started our day having breakfast at Sharma Ji Ki Chai for their famous samosa, butter buns and chai (70 INR / 0.70 USD). The best part about this place was the atmosphere, right on the side of the street!
We hopped into a rickshaw toward Chowk for something we were so excited to try: LUCKNOW BIRYANI. For that, we went to Idrees Biryani. When we arrived, they were just starting to prepare the biryani from scratch, so we were able to watch the entire cooking process! The wait was WORTH IT! The mutton biryani was PERFECT: oily, rich and infused with mutton flavour (120 INR / 1.68 USD each).
ïżœSince we were full, we decided to do a little sightseeing. We went to the historical Bara Imambara - a complex which houses a gorgeous mosque, impressive gate and Mughal architecture. The grounds provide a relaxing escape from the city bustle, but unfortunately, we were the on a Friday and not allowed to enter. There are rumours that there is an extensive tunnel system underneath the complex, with one reaching all the way to Delhi.
Since we were in Lucknow, we HAD to eat mutton NIHARI as well. We went to Mubeen’s to taste this dish. It was smothered in a rich gravy and was quite oily. Their kitchen was the most interesting sight, watching the chefs prepare different rumali roti FAST and fresh, and all of the pots of different Indian specialties (125 INR / 1.75 USD).
Next was the quintessential Lucknowi specialty: TUNDAY KEBAB! We ventured deep into Chowk to find the original Tunday Kababi shop which opened in 1905, and the dish dating back to the 17th century. These buffalo kebabs are designed to be eaten without teeth, and are supposed to melt in your mouth. The meat is so finely minced, that it has the consistency of a paste! The kebabs are also infused with 150+ different spices, and at this original location, cooked over charcoal (30 INR / 0.42 USD per 4 pieces).
To end our incredible day of eating street food in Lucknow, we wanted dessert! Kulfi faluda back in Aminbad was the perfect way to wash down all of that meat! The shop, Prakash Ki Mashoor Kulfi, was making the kulfi outside on the street. It was delicious (60 INR / 0.84 USD).

@Luke Martin...As an FYI, kulfi (Kool -fee) is an ice cream from the 16th /17th century. The Mughal rulers sitting in Delhi (and the plains) had camel and elephant caravans laden with ice brought down from the Himalayas for their sherbets and to make kulfi during the summer months.
Must've been good to be king!
PS: I HAVE TO correct you about one thing that bothers me (you're not the only one I've said this to).
P-U-N = pun (just like the English word)
    NOT "poon".
    It's pun -jaab.
    That's all.
