The Helen of Troy had the worst voice in this role I have heard in my lifetime, terrible diction and out of tune, Ordonnez has a good voice, but here he has no notes above B Flat, a Good Faust will sing a D Flat in this opera. Caballe was always a Beautiful voice and is one of the Greatest Soprano's of the Latter part of the 20th Century, but Gaiotti was a full voiced Mephisto with a timbre to die for, he was the Devil.
But it was a superb performance altogether with some very beautiful singing in parts, the Chorus from start to finish was exemplary, the Lontano duet was very lovely done, Mr Ordonnez has sung better and I have heard him do this role better, but he was a convincing Faust, the Liceu a very Beautiful Opera House with excellent acoustics, I have been there many times, it is one of my favourite houses, along with the San Carlo in Naples and Covent Garden in London.
I am a Centenarian who saw my first Opera ( Rehearsal ) in 1927 at the age of 9 , with my mother in the auditorium of Covent Garden it was the Opening scene of Gotterdamerung, I went twice to the Rehearsals once it was Larsen Todsen and Graarud and the Other was Frida Leider and Rudolf Laubenthal, both with Albert Coates conducting, the massive sound and the Voices were incredible, I saw my First Opera's live in 1931 Otello with Lauritz Melchior and Tristan also with Melchior and Leider both conducted by Thomas Beecham, later in 36 I saw Lauri Volpi Rethberg Pinza and Brownlee in Aida and then the Coronation season of 37, I saw Martinelli in Otello Aida Carmen Tosca and Turandot, that was some of the most magnificent singing I have ever seen and heard. A lifetime of memories.
My Father had been a leading Tenor in the Chorus at Covent Garden since 1909 till 1940, so he sang in the chorus in performances of most of the greatest singers of the 20th Century and some of the 19th Century, from Chaliapin Caruso Martinelli Gigli Melchior Destinn Flagstad and Leider he kept a diary on every performance he ever saw with casts and opinions, this was from 1897 when he was in Training in Italy and saw Caruso for the first time in Livorno with Emma Carelli and Giraldoni in Manon Lescaut with Puccini and Tamagno sitting in the audience together.
My father said that Caruso was singing with such beauty that many people including his singing teacher was crying, so then he looked and Puccini and Tamagno themselves also had tears . The end of the Performance was Pandemonium, Curtain call after curtain call, then outside the local Gendermerie or whatever they were with Guns were lining the square and streets the Cheering he said he had never seen the likes of.
I do believe that many Caruso performances ended like this, he really was from God I believe, my father said that he was the greatest voice he had ever had the Luck to hear Man or Woman. My sadly departed friend and colleague John Steane talked to my father many times about this, also I heard Alfred Piccaver and Walter Widdrop among others who were also friends of my Father, Widdrop occasionally and Piccaver used my mother has their accompanist in Concerts my Mother was a Classically trained Pianist who often assisted at places like Glyndebourne and Covent Garden at times, or in Concert.
I use a voice recognition Computer and it is my only way to still see many modern performances, which are often terrible.
    I will take my leave.
