These Glitches Went TOO FAR for DOOM Eternal Speedruns

- Sometimes glitches can be too broken, even for speedruns. Doom eternal has had this problem as its many glitches are almost unavoidable, lets explore how the community has tried to solve this problem with the creation of the no major glitches category.

*_Doom eternal has the silliest names for its glitches_*
I love them it’s great
@@WaifuRuns WHERE DO THESE NAMES COME FROM
@@edward9487 I'd assume they get named after the people who find them or first share them
What about dark souls' "fall control assisted meme roll"
@@Sad_Elf That's often the case, but it's usually just some random word or object the person who found it came up with. Avocado skip is a perfect example.
We also can't forget that Mirror's edge glitchless is a thing.
"Not a glitch"%
Man. The first time I looked up a speedrun it was Mirror's Edge.
Then he went out of bounds and I STFU thinking this would help me 😂
TLDR: I prefer Glitchless runs
I’d prefer if you stopped talking
Sure it is
“Preeeeety sure that’s a glitch”
Fun fact: I discovered the Arc Complex skip where you reload after you get to the main street area to unload an invisible barrier at the end of the road. Doesnt matter, because I dont think its even used in current runs anymore, but it was my small contribution to the speedrunning aspect of this game
"wE CalLEd ThAT ChETinG in ThE 90s :DD"
Newsflash: Speedrunners also used glitches in the 90s.

THIS JUST IN: Local man asks why ppl want to say that he can't phase through walls, run at supersonic speeds, or gain the powers of flight because ppl in the 90's could bunny hop
Last I checked SpeedDemosArchive actually banned the use of most glitches.
@@psyxypher3881 but back then most speedruns were actually tracked on forums made by fans of the games as well. That was also why everyone left speeddemosarchive

@@omegalord777 You must be fun at parties.
I'm just very disappointed in those people who specifically look up unrestricted speedruns to complain about them in the comments.
They've been doing this as long as speedrunning has existed. Like they think speedrunners just use these glitches because they hate playing the game normally and want to "cheat" to get it over with quickly
And people who hate on tas speedruns because it's "hacking."
Also included is the thought of any% speedrunners ruining and don't care about the game with cheats when the same people are the ones who poured thousands of hours into the game, for tricks newbies probably can't pull off at all
It just seems very narrow-minded to me. Like yeah, they're breaking the game, but it's not like the run itself is easy or anything. A lot of game-breaking tricks are super difficult to pull off in a controlled environment, let alone at a breakneck pace. And this isn't even getting into the ones were you're flailing around blindly and relying on muscle memory and timing to land where you want. Sure you could make a semantic argument they're not "playing the game" anymore, but that doesn't give you the right to denigrate what is an impressive set of skills for the title these people have chosen to compete for.
And really, that's the kicker. A couple dozen people jockeying for position on a specific leaderboard and maybe making a couple bucks on Twitch in the process aren't damaging anyone else's ability to enjoy the game however they want to!
I personally just don't like the speedruns that manipulate save/load. Since you're not actually playing the game like, clipping through walls and figuring out kill zones/solid paths, but just literally loading the game.
I think half life suffered that the most.
DMC5 and DOOM Eternal, probably 2 of the best games I've ever played.
Hell, I even went as far as beating all 3 Ultra Nightmare modes. ON CONSOLE
You fucking madman. I don't even use K&M and I would even spend the hours to learn K&M just to beat those modes.
Agree, both are great "video gamey" games with a high skill ceiling.
Also plan on doing UN on console, can now somewhat comfortably play on nightmare, but definitely not ready yet
I wouldn't consider most glitch heavy speedruns to be cheating. A lot of those glitches are very hard to do. You cheat to make things easier and a lot of the time those glitches are harder than if you just played the game normally. If cheating is making things harder than you're doing it wrong.
Also the fact that it isn't really cheating on me since it's in its own category anyways.
Oh yes glitches make things harder lol that backwards long jump in the little room to skip the door in the first part of M64 was so much of a pain I never picked that game back up.
Honestly the only glitches I find cheating are the ones that make you unable to take damage and such.
As a demoknight main i approve of trimping

WaifuRuns is running Eternal Speedruns. We might get another DMC3 WR type scenario
Rip N' Tear 🔥
One unfun glitch that comes to mind from history was "007, golden eye"
It was faster to move if staring straight down, that was hard to classify as a "glitch" but it was easily classified as "unfun" and was banned from speed runs of the restricted catagory.
That's pretty poignant, given how all this glitching (done in ALL doom eternal speedrun categories) is so framerate dependant!
i personally think that glicthed speed runs are a-okay, i would never consider them cheating as it is just something wrong with the game and youre just using it to your advantage, the whole point of speed running is to finish the game as fast as possible, glitches that can help you finish a game faster is imo just fine
people who says glitched speedrun are cheating clearly never been speedrunning before
Definitely! I'm glad it has it's own catagories though, by the nature of requiring better hardware in order to run at high fps, having a free-spinning scroll wheel mouse for maximum launching, you can see how a price barrier to entry quickly starts building and making it virtually impossible for new blood to enter the speedrunning scene with ease.
I mean, the comments he picked seems to be from extremely vitriolic idiots. Saying you're trash because you can glitch the game and get a world record isn't a really an intelligent move. Besides, there are categories, Any% doesn't care about glitching, its not cheating there. Just watch an Any% Glitchless category, or 100% Category, if its such an issue. Both categories require a different set of skills and knowledge. But again, vitriolic people.
It's not that you're wrong, but what do you mean "personally"? Speedruns have no "personal opinion" on what's cheating and what's not in the first place, i don't know what people are on about. There's a clear definition what's speedrunning, and categories that put restriction on what can be used. By default, speedruns are Any%, meaning that everything in-game except cheats(in-game cheat codes for developers) is allowed. There's no exceptions, no special cases, Any% is Any%.
There are categories for people that don't find enjoyable watching Any% speedrunning category, like Glitchless% or "No major glitches" in case where glitch skips too much and makes other techniques worthless, but that's it, they can't argue about it being cheating or not, they can only know definition or make mistake thinking otherwise. That's why there's no need to argue with them, since it's no argument, it's decided, defined already.
@@junkolover9518 did you not see the comments shown in the video? their opinion is literally that glitched speedruns aren't real speedruns and this person is disagreeing with them
Seeing MuteD6_ footage is so satisfying, that man can navigate so fast in the map that it's even hard to keep track of it, absolutely amazing. Also great video Waifu, hope you having fun on your trip!
My favorite thing from a "No Glitches Run" is from Ocarina of Time, there are a couple instances where you walk through a barrier. It's considered fine, because the floor and door that you go through only have collision on one side, and so it's completely fine to do. There's also a chest that you use a glitch to open when underwater, but no one cares because the actual change to the run is so minor.
Not gonna lie, those comments of those dudes calling people who are literally hundreds of times better than them at gaming "cheaters" just because they use glitches had me laughing for like 5 minutes.
better yes, cheap yes
So far the most fun combat i experienced in FPS was ULTRAKILL. Because its literally devil may cry with guns.
Its beyond that, beyond Godlike.
But... DMC has guns...? 😉
They're definitely the best Christian games (since demon-killing and all, haha).
@@itsdumptruck Indeed it has.
Dogg, if you like ULTRAKILL you should also check out DUSK. Made by the same folks--NEW BLOOD interactive--it blew me away just as much as ULTRAKILL.
love watching the eternal NMG categories, i really need to start playing through this again and then try some runs NMG or restricted. Glad your enjoying the runs and i enjoy watchign your streams :)
i got the damn bell activated for all notifications and still the youtube doesn't notify me when there's a new video, youtube really sucks. awesome video as always waifu
I just wanna say i followed you channel recently bc your videos are both very insightful and well-made. props to you my guy!
Honestly. I always love videos that still use busted stuff to beat the game just to see how chaotic something can get even if it's banned. If you mess around and play around with glitches just see how fast one can beat it. Go for it. If someone tells you to tough up and kick butt with no glitches. Go for it and prove you're a god speedrunning gamer that brings entertainment. Playing for fun is the most important step into the long grind, so having a moment where you messed up in your run and feel it isn't possible to beat your personal best, might as well kick out the glitches and make it more interesting to avoid burnout with some laughs.
I love watching and learning banned techniques, it's like the forbidden techniques or dark magic lol
i really like how the restricted category is entirely based on fun
I love the Machine Gun in the background sm

Waifu your content is amazing- thank you for putting these together for us to enjoy
Very insightful and cool video! It's cool to see consensus and deliberation haha
I'm glad you made this man. I feel like if more people are informed on how a game is speedrun or what glitches are in use, it can be more inviting for people to watch and get involved themselves. I always hate when a runner is on good pace and someone comes in not knowing what is happening and throws of the runners flow by inquiring to much and poking remarks at the runner.
Amazing video!
I do i wanba mention one thing tho, if you get a glitch like a zip or a railboost on a restricted category you are allowed to reload checkpoint or altf4 if you're playing on ultra nightmare to keep the run valid, tho it does lose time
I think speedruns with glitches serve as a form of reminder for game developers to refine their game. Some glitches take precise movements and rng, which displays extreme dedication as a gamer. Glitchless speedruns can show how balancing certain elements/mechanisms are critical, else the players can cheese their way through.
out here making doom legislation
i love hearing about the mess that is the doom eternal speedruns, but i was literally listening to the background song just before i watched this so i kept having to see if i accidentally kept my music running
instead of banning tec/glitches, how about moderating what content is allowed to be skipped? This makes more sense and is more direct about what you're trying to accomplish.
Because generally what is disliked is not particularly the skipping of said content but the method of doing so, I had the same though process initially too
glitches are fun as hell, but its not everyone's cup of tea, but imo, the true mastery of a game is knowing how to break it. i had the take of "gliches take the fun away from the game" untill i started learning them, the best exemple being skyrim. and on top of everything, though some are easy to exectue, some go to almost frame perfect imputs and its so hard but satisfying to pull off. also, cheating has to do with messing with the game code, glitches and exploits are not cheats, we just abuse the code that's already in play
Loved the video!
Nice use of Machinegirl in your soundtrack for the vid. Love them, you get a sub from me.
imagine a demon just seeing the doom slayer become a jet air plane
So that in that combat section at 11:38 a pretty funny non gamebreaking glitch can happen where the marauder that spawns can spawn its hound inside a wall so it can't get to you and can't die
Yes new upload
Oh wow followed you on Twitch for ages though not at all a frequent watcher because of full time work and adult life but never realised you A have a youtube channel and B make such great videos
This is one of those "small world" moments for me and made my night. Thank you youtube recommended tab!
i'm surprised you didn't mention the second problem with slope boosting: it created a hardware gap because it was easier/faster if you had a mouse with freescrolling
As a normal gamer I never experienced any glitches or broken bugs in Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal. It's amazing that people can figure out this stuff, and master it.
A glitch in a game is not a matter of opinion, a glitch is doing anything that is breaking a programming flow in an unintended way. If something is programmed to ONLY be done one way and one way only, and the code was flawed, and you found the flaw and exploited it, That is a glitch, because what you did IS NOT supposed to be possible. however we game developers refer to glitches as "Bugs", But to each their own. But by definition, that is a glitch.
I did not intend for this to sound aggressive or anything, I was just explaining exactly what a glitch was so there was no confusion.
You see, the problem in your understanding here is that you're viewing this from the perspective of the programmers, which is objectively wrong here because these speedrunners don't work for Id and don't have access to the source code or design documents to see what is or isn't intentional (remember, without the source you can't read dev comments after all). Additionally, sometimes code is working exactly as intended, but can still be exploited in some fashion that _feels_ like a glitch such as how the ballista's intentional backwards kick can be abused to gain some insane forward momentum by doing a 180, firing, and doing another 180 to look forward again, none of this seems to break game logic at all and the devs haven't altered its behavior despite verifiably watching speedruns on livestreams. This is why defining what's a glitch or not in speedruns can be hard, because some things that you can do in games can give insane results without actually breaking the game's own logic or at least _seeming_ like it doesn't because you don't have the source code in front of you to check.
Also, glitch and bug are both interchangeable last I checked and both unbelievably old so I think "bug" being used over "glitch" where you are is probably just local preference lol, but who knows.
we love doom and machine girl
I never understood how *some* glitches are not considered a glitch for glitchless runs.
Whenever I think of "glitchless" I think of "how it was meant to be played", meaning no bunnyhops, no boosts from things to reach places you weren't supposed to reach etc, like a normal person would play the game but, y'know, faster.
Yes but the way it was "suppose to be played" is boring.
when i watch videos about people using glitches i always wonder how did people find them
I always feel any% is necessary no matter how boring or uninteresting it may be, as it is THE fastest way to beat a game. Some games any% are cool some are really boring but I find a way to really appreciate them as a form of perfection, but I get how awful they can be to watch sometimes. Like Crash 2 comes to mind for me personally. The 100% run will always be the most fun imo the any% is still really cool with how crazy the glitch is but... You literally jump on a box for like 3 minutes straight it doesn't get more boring than that.
Yeah. In the end person just decides to watch it or ...skip watching 😊
was not expecting to hear machinegirl in a speedrunning video 🔥🔥🔥
Great video Waifu.
Keep up the good work!!
All I could picture in my head was Doom guy flying through the air and screaming YEEEEEEEET!
I really like watching glitched any% speed runs as well as glitchless or restricted runs. Glitch runs show off the fastest the game can be beaten using any means necessary, whereas glitchless shows off the runners skill and speed
3:58 is when he finally gets to the topic
Intro is useful content, but only if you've literally never seen a speedrun before
I think it depends of each community (as i'm not part of the doom community so who am I to judge their decision), but after looking at speedruns of other games the amount of effort and cooperation that speedrunners, modders and glitch hunters put together into finding strats, routes and skips, I really think calling a glitched speedrun "cheating" is an absolute disrespect to the people who invested their time in finding, learning and mastering these glitches and runs. From the perspective of the communities I make part, the objective is finishing at the least time possible by all means necessary depending on the run category, so it's celebrated when a new glitch is found allowing players to make faster runs, or be free from old strats that limited their options, or getting past rng.
Doesnt edge boosting not work anymore?

On another note unrelated to content. For some reason, there are a ton of ads randomly placed in the vid. Nine minutes in and I’ve seen my 7th or 8th ad. Have no idea if it’s only on my end, or if CZcams is being strange. I also don’t know if you can control this but I’d thought I’d point it out anyways. Might watch it again on a different device to be sure it’s not just a one time thing.
Edit: ya it was just a one time thing. Still weird that it happened tho…

Doom Eternal is the most hype 100% speedrun in existence
Years ago I was in the "Glitches aren't speedrunning" group. Nowadays I just sit back and watch that with "damn bro how the fuck did someone discover that". I of course hate glitches like credit warping, so Doom Eternal's "I stood in the corner and the physics engine shot me out of bounds" is fine. It's not as if they performed movement inputs in the first level, shot a gun, and then suddenly the ending credits started playing.
came for speedruns stayed for music taste :P
Imagine being perplexed by the existence of glitches within a speed run, literal negative iq
i thought the music sounded familiar, glad to see some mg representation out here
is there still un restricted tho breaking games is more fun to watch
6:44 This sometimes happens to me when I play Eternals Battlemode.
This is the first time I'm hearing machine girl on a video, fittingly so with doom too!
Glitches are actually pretty easy to define. The reason why speed runners have such a problem with defining them is because groups of speed runners want glitches (for what ever reason) in the glitchless category.
Glitches are defined as any action, operation, or event that behaves in an unintended way. So yes that means that having two skills that used together makes a super skill a glitch if that was not intended in the game. Even though the two skills would be valid to use, using them together creates a side effect. In software development, side effects are considered bugs.
Your clickbait titles are getting more and more powerful, i'm very proud.
'Cyberspider'
...The arachnotron?
"broken mess" is a stretch. It's a SOLID game that you can break if you seek to do so.
Could say the same about dark souls 1
i think he meant more it like once you pop the cork it’s really just all out there
Nah, to this day there are regular soft locks and the core combat loop is built on unintended mechanics like PB swaps. Also BFG crashes.
Ya know, I appreciate a game that can be broken to hell like this, without ruining the average player's experience. AND without the devs butting in and patching everything out.
I personally love glitches, especially out of bounds glitches....so long as they don't ruin the average player's game in a normal playthrough. I fully understand patching something that breaks the game on accident during a normal run.
But, as an example, Final Fantasy XV. There was a really fun exploit/glitch/thing you could do, that'd let you essentially FLY, permanently, around the entire map, and even in other maps that you normally never get to explore. You could get into places you weren't meant to, and even unfinished DLC locations. Hell, we found some of the Prompto DLC Trailer location right after it released, just floating out in some snowy mountains. It was a fairly annoying glitch to pull off, and it required very specific things that no normal player would just DO on accident. Like, during late game boss fight, you had to get the boss to chase you into an underground section from a previous part of the map, and save at a very specific time as you got hit. I can't even tell you how many extra hours I put into FFXV because of the glitch. I loved just dicking around exploring things, and checking out stuff I wasn't meant to see. Sadly, they eventually patched it out. Even if you have a save, the instant you load, the flying disappears and you drop back to the ground. I pretty much immediately stopped playing after that. There was NO reason, whatsoever, to patch it out. It wasn't something that effected the normal game, and it was something hard enough to pull off that the only people doing it were people that were probably already done with the game and put in the effort to do the glitch. But they patched it, ruining a lot of people's fun. The only way to do it now, would be to have a disc copy of the game that's un-patched, and install it fresh, never updating it.
I dunno. There's something I can really appreciate about devs that don't patch out bugs, glitches, and exploits...that aren't hurting anyone. I never understood why they'd patch out stuff that...honestly...just ADDS to the fun you can have with a game. If it's not something actively breaking a normal playthrough, then why get rid of it? It won't effect the average player, and the people that DO experience it, are people that WANT to experience it.
There should be a "kill everything" category
Cyberspiders?? They're Arachnotrons, my dude.
ah, the pain of working out what was and wasn’t allowed for nmg on release. good times.
Hl2 eli01 skip moment
Meatball rodeo being banned makes me sad
Doom eternal speedrunners: hay Bethesda thats a nice game you got there, would be a shame if someone were to... *break it*
The word Glitch. Makes me feel like it happened on accident. But idk
I want a speedrun where people play the latest version with many of the previous exploits patched out, but it seems that no one wants to do it
Be the change you want to see
Mah boi MSushi made it in here nice recognition bruh
I remember watching a doom speed run back in the day, and being utterly dissapointed. every level was the same, lol. clip out of bounds, and walk to the exit.
These example comments about "Using glitches is cheating"... I'll personnaly go ahead and say that, its why there are multiple categories, such as Any% and Any% Glitchless (or no out of bounds, etc)... both are speedruns, they just both require different sets of skills. Its only cheating if in the category you're running, its banned.
In which case, by definition, you’re not running that category, LOL
exploits are intended features used in unintended ways, bug are unintended features not meant to be in the game
Speedrunning with glitches still takes a lot of skill (so long as it’s not a bethesda game)
These rules remind me of borderlands 2 speedruns, any% BL2 is less then 2 hours, "no glitches" is about 3-4 hours but that still includes rocket and grenade jumping dialogue skips and many other things considered not glitches
Bruh I just got rickrolled by an ad
That audio glitch at 9:11
This reminds of the vid when the developers watched a speedrun of their game/s, and it was funny as they thought of messing with speedrunners. Great video as always, Waifu!
Doom eternal is my favorite kind of broken game. The game that you need to try to break and not just stumble across them and ruin the game. Botw is another example, there are so many glitches in botw but they have, while not difficult, specific set ups that you need to usually intentionally do. Of course you can discover minor things or maybe even some major things but it's so rare that I love finding things like that.
Being a normal person this is the first I've heard of people not understanding what a glitch is. It's obviously an action that the game developer did not intend to be possible. So, for example, yes bunny hopping is a glitch.
9:11 wat is that sound lol
As someone who loves to 100% games, i honestly feel that who ever says "using glitches is not speedrunning" should get a life long ban on games, glitches are hella hard to find at times and it's even harder to find glitches that actually help you finish the game sooner, so why not use the glitch? and there is also the whole thing about multiple speedrun categories
The doom speed run community just wants to rip ant tear, I can get behind that
Fucking love your content bro.
They could call one category “No major glitches”, and the other “No major gameplay”. 😆
