Ask This Old House | Plunge Pool, Heat Pump (S17 E1) | FULL EPISODE
/ thisoldhouse - Jak na to + styl
I've had that exact HWHP (hot water heat pump) from AO Smith in my house. Been running great for 3-4 years now.
I just love TOH been watching for Years keep up the great work
"I'm talking to this guy who wants a pool in his yard but doesn't have a very big yard"... *seeing the actual yard*... you're saying this is a small yard? You gotta be kidding me
Much smaller than my yard...I could put that yard in my side yard.
@@whatdoyouthinktodd look at Mr. Big-yard over here.
15:49 the face I make after I pour a bowl of cereal and find out I got no milk
Those Heats Pumps are really cool. With their high efficiency, I think the gov' should really give better rebates/incentives on heat pipes so that a lot more homes install them.
Hungry for more ATOH! The craving ends TODAY!
Did anyone else see the window well break at 6:59?
I don't see anything!!? :(
@@YadaYadaYadadada It's on the ground, to the immediate right of the truck. There are some pavers/brick that keep the ground away from the windows, and that retaining wall gets pushed in by the weight of the truck. It took me a minute to spot it.
oof, yeah. 18,000 lbs pool + flatbed truck. Those pavers didn't stand a chance. You have to watch it closely because the camera cuts just as the pavers start to shift. Nice catch!
Good eye and no fluke they cut away before the top row buckled more, easy fix though
5:37 that's some sloppy tile work right there.
Völundr Frey I think he missed a spot
It annoyed me more than it should have.
Was going to say, right after they say the epoxy grout helps with the water proofing... not if there's gaps in it it won't.
LOVE IT
Using large format tile and not keeping them even. I'm sure they are paying a premium for a tiled septic tank with tile.
I believe in an episode they had the same or very similar project. The tank, filters, plus the install was $26,000
Is anyone even going to notice once the pool is filled with water though?
I love the way they touched fiberglass wool. I bet it was a painful experience.
Most is made to be itchless now. I sold it for years. Fun to train newbies by rubbing it on their arm, and pointing out 20 min later, nobody scratching.
If you insulation in the attic, make sure you have attic fans, because the sun beats down on the insulation all day and when the sun goes down, the the insulation will radiate it stored heat into your home. If your house is air conditioned you will still have the same problem with the insulation in the attic but your air conditioner will pump the heat to outdoors.
Microphonix Virtual Studio or put a reflective fabric over the insulation, vent from above the reflective fabric to under the eaves.
They do talk about not clogging your venting. If you have daylight in the eaves, and ridge vent or turtle vents, its sufficient for passive venting, more is better though. I sold Attic Insulation for 15 years. You should not have air infiltration from the house into your attic. Bathroom vents should be ducted to penetrate the roof, not into the attic. Most modern roofing companies know the importance of venting prolonging the life of your shingles.
I lived in the Czech Republic for 11 years. All they have is 'on demand' hot water heaters. Both electric (most common) and gas. How is it that they don't have a problem with getting enough electricity to power their hot water heaters? I can't imagine it's because they are on 220 instead of 110.
We never ran out of hot water. I don't understand.
220 v 110 is probably the reason.
Your whole system is 220V, while in the USA only high load items are 220V. Most of the electricity is used as 110V, which means using twice the Amp load as a 220V setup. While the water heater is using the same amount of load the rest of the load on the meter is different.
The cost of the hotwater heater, a customer will never make their money back on it as they claim to save and when it breaks they are very expensive to fix. On demand would have been a better option
The whole point was that they do not have enough capacity to operate a demand heater.
@@yhnbgt365 there still are cheaper options to fix that issue that doesbt have the heavy maintenance costs
@@zack9912000 a cheaper on demand option would have been to go with a gas model, but they said they didn't have gas run to the house. I wonder if that's just for their house or if the neighborhood was designed that way. Would really suck to not have gas lines running through the neighborhood.
Bicycles make life and cities better. Cities need to have protected bike lanes to encourage more people to get out of the car and on to a bicycle. Ride to school, work or for fun. It reduces traffic and congestion. Bicycles are also fossil fuels free transportation saving energy. Cities that are walkable and bike able are more people friendly. That Florida project is one example. The youtube channel Streetfilms shows what many cities have done to encourage more people friendly access.
I am just curious how Kevin went from being a viewer to working on *This Old House*
They already put this.
I was about to say. I've seen this before
Yah. It's old episode
anyone else notice that he turned of the unit valve but cut the side that goes to the wall AKA still should have had water pressure. Obviously turned off the water to that part of the house or the entire house.
Saving energy saves money month after month, year after year.
Too many people only look to buy the cheapest thing and do not bother to calculate the long term savings of a more energy efficient product.
The amount of energy it uses compared to a NG unit is more and the cost for the unit is very expensive. It costs less to run then a normal electric hot water heater but over the life the savings will never cover the cost difference
How many times is she going to say thats incredible lol
The pool looks more like a jacuzzi
apparently it can become one in the winter according to the lady talking about them
Why is there a car charger haning on the second floor of the barn?
Richard, I notice you’re using CPVC. Do you prefer that pipe over pex?
I'm sure he was just matching what was existing
Use pex if you can CPVC gets brittle over time
Hi TOH , I seen this episode on PBS , thanks for showing it on CZcams ! 👍😀🔨🔩🔧
And I've seen it on CZcams, on this very channel.. this is a re-upload. =S
@@Fe7Ace yeah it's just a repeat !
Never put glue into the fitting, only the pipe, reason being the excess glue in the fitting is pushed into the bore of the pipe and can reduce the volume/bore by as much as 25%. This method is also relevant in waste fittings. Unfortunately plumbers can’t help themselves and as lecturer I have found very little success in getting them to stop this practice.
on the label of Oatey cement glue it says to put on pipe then fitting then pipe once more.
I'd think it less of a problem if they actually did thin coatings on both instead of swabbing globs of it onto each side like they were greasing up a pig.
anybody that walks on 1/4 inch plywood over insulation has a lot more faith in 1/4 plywood than me Tommy
I think he was talking about putting that plywood over rigid sheet insulation. That's totally fine, as the plywood is just there to keep the insulation from getting squished, by spreading the load of walking across the insulation. Rigid insulation can handle quite a bit of weight as long as it isn't concentrated in small areas.
@@bmay8818 ... and there is plywood under the rigid insulation - that is why they will be using the rigid insulation.
My question to tom is i live in kashmir where in we have winter, spring, summer and autums all four seasons. And we have brick walled houses and i was planning to do outer wall Insulation by simply i stalling styrofoam sheets 3 inches and cover them with fiber cement boards and finally waterproof coat and colour.. What do you say
did Tom answer you yet?
@@Fattony6666 nope not yet
Why not buy a container box for 2,000. and put a liner in it. Just as good.
Stanley Keith probably better beings the woman can’t tell the difference between a properly poured and vibrated concrete wall! All those cavities would still have to be filled as the water proofing membrane can only do its job if it’s a complete seal! Then we can move on to the tile job! Anyone notice the nice sized chunk of missing grout as the guy was finishing the tile job? That noped me the heck out of any interest in their pools! I will admit that they would be a ok pond for a few koi!
Its the plumbing mounts as well.
عمل رائع وجميل

@20:05 Anyone else noticed Richard connecting both condensate drain and overflow to the same drain? Not sure about Florida, but generally speaking that's beyond profession and might not even be to code. When the drain plugs, which happens frequently due to the evaporator coil washing of all the dust from air, how is the overflow (clear hose) supposed to carry the condensate?
Manual says: "Do not connect condensate
drain lines with other drain or discharge lines into a single (common) pipe or line. Each line (condensate drain line, temperature and relief valve discharge pipe, etc.) should be independently run to an adequate drain." (from AO Smith Installation Instructions)

Another McMansion sticking out in a bedroom community
I'll get the 200-300 dollar pool from Walmart and call it good.
Celebrations, Florida...... Disney's Disappointment. Houses there are notorious for being built horribly.
Another duplicate season And show
Always new people jumping in and seeing these eps for the first time.
Holy read from a script much? The plunge pool intro was like needles in my ears. They were talking there was a period after each written word. #next
nice pool, but she's not a great host...
