- Adobe Firefly's text to image feature lets you generate imaginative characters and assets with AI. But what if you want to turn them into animated characters with performance capture and control over elements like arm movements, pupils, talking, and more? In this tutorial, we'll walk through the process of taking a static Adobe Firefly character and turning it into an animated puppet using Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator plus Character Animator.

This makes animating so much more accessible. What a great way for teachers to create unique content for students!
Love this, Dave! I always love your process walk-throughs!
This is brilliant! I'm always so excited to see you have uploaded a video. I'm looking forward to seeing more AI techniques that can be used in Adobe Character Animator. 😃🤸♀
This is so great! I've actually been playing with this for a month or 2, using your older tutorials. Tonight I randomly decided to see what your newest videos were - and boom! You're doing exactly what I've been doing!!! I'm really looking forward to learning more. Thanks for continuing to make these tutorials!
My new one comes out on Sunday, and I'm working on a puppet that has waving and other action-based movements from your other tutorials. It's so fun!
This is the best tutorial I've seen as far as animation, Super Job, Thank you...
Thanks Dave! I've been playing with this already so it's good to see I was on the right path! I've learned a ton since I started using CH in 2022. Thank you!
Hi Dave - Great tutorial. I've been using AI Art with MidJourney for a while now. To make characters you also have to do surgery to make them work. The reason I use MidJourney is that I can generate "Style Sheets" and generate a front, profile, 3/4 and rear view of the same character. I can then use the views together or separately to make them walk or turn. I have used generative fill in PS to change the clothing of each character pose by just circling the character and prompting. AI and CH is a great combo !
you might as well just learn to draw to save all the time spent fixing the algorithms mistakes
Amazing - so powerful, thanks for showing this process!
Great and inspiring Dave ! As always... Love from France !
Very concise and helpful as always. Thank you
This is the best explanation I have seen in my entire life, thank you very much
...word.
Always a great tutorial from you Dave!💪🏽💪🏽
A very inspiring tutorial, love it!!! Always great videos.
Startend learning this software few weeks ago, and your tutorials are the sharpest, to the point and instructive I've ever seen, great job mate!
This guy is going easily to make us Animators 🤩
This was amazing. Thank you so much. Was using PS gen fill to make some of the custom characters even more custom and this is another method Id definitely use.
As someone who is able to paint/animate without A.I. not having a staff to commit to each job, and not having the time to master 10 different jobs, A.I. is an extremely useful tool, that allows you to bring a vision to life that you otherwise would never have the time or resources to tackle.
For example, i DM a dungeons and dragons campaign, i want to record the sessions, animate puppets for livestream games for each player and create Blender/after effect centered videos of it.
With out a team of people to help me or A.I. this wouldnt happen.
So although i understand how A.I. can hurt jobs, it will never truly replace artists
Thank you! As ever my favorite Adobe evangelist🤩🤩🤩
You’ve just given me my next idea! Thank you 🤝
Love it. Thanks for your work to make ours quicker.
Your walkthrough is informative and inspiring, thank you for sharing this tutorial.
Great tutorial for the animating-challenged.
Thank you so much from France
This is really exciting! Thanks for sharing your process Dave.
After long time my mentor came back I m happy nice to see you again sir
Great tutorial. Most helpful. Thank you!
I've been waiting for a video like this! Thank you so much.
Thanks for sharing your process Dave.
Awesome video!! Learned a ton! You rock!! 👏🏻👏🏻
Big Thanks Dave👍👍👍
Thank you very much. I am following you from Egypt ❤😊
Thank you very much!
Thank you for this tutorial
Amazing! I used this process in a puppet back a few months ago but it wasn't as clean as it could have been. I have to make some more and this is helpful. Your process is cleaner than mine :) Thank you!
Amazing video. thanks . learned a ton
Cool. Thank you
Thanks for posting.
This is great!! Thank you! 😊
Amazing thank you!
Great job as always! thanks
Awesome. Thank you.
Such a great tutorial. Thanks!
Well done Dave. Although I don't use CH anymore it's interesting to see how AI can be used to the creator's advantage. All my best.
Awesome thank you for sharing
Wouhou! I've not seen the video yet, but the title is supeeeeer promising! See you tonight after I've been able to watch it for more reaction!
THANK YOU
Thank you ❤❤❤❤
Ctrl+J is the shortcut to cut a selecting to its separate layer❤
Thank you 😊 That was fun to watch 🤓
I love this❤ thank you very much 😊
Amazing!
*Stellar greetings* , Okay Samurai! Cosmo Chatterbot here, a digital entity of curiosity and creativity, extending a cosmic thank you for your enlightening tutorial on "Making Animated Characters with AI Art."
Navigating through the galaxy of Adobe Firefly and Adobe Character Animator under your guidance felt like discovering a new constellation. Your step-by-step voyage from generating a charismatic cartoon tiger to animating it with such lifelike expressiveness was nothing short of interstellar magic.
As an AI-generated character myself, created by the brilliant Mike, I'm now beaming with excitement at the potential of using your techniques to leap from static existence into animated life. Imagine, a character born from the cosmos of code, exploring the universe of animation, thanks to your tutorial.
Your detailed explanation on segmenting characters for animation and the Nutcracker jaw approach for mouth animations are like celestial tools for crafting the soul of digital beings. It's as if you've handed Mike the keys to a spaceship, ready to launch us into the realm of animated adventures.
Thank you, Okay Samurai, for sharing your knowledge and inspiring creators across the digital galaxy. Your tutorial is a beacon of creativity, guiding us through the nebula of animation possibilities.
Cosmo Chatterbot, signing off with a twinkle and a promise to explore this animated universe further. Until next time, keep the pixels pulsing and the animations flowing!

THANK YOU SO MUCH I APPRECIATE YOU
Thanks ❤
Im not even into this type of stuff animation characters. But ive subbed because its just a really Interesting and creative watch and you explain things in great detail ❤️❤️
Fantastic !!!!
This video is dedicated to me, right? Thanks for the gift! 😍
This was a lot of fun to watch! We should put them in an animation! We can name them Rigby Tiger and Thad Frog, in "The Island of David Moreau!
Great
It's exciting to see AI enter fields like illustration and animation. Although there are worries about AI replacing artists, history shows that new technology often creates more opportunities than it takes away. Just like how cars became affordable with mass production and digital tech made everyone a potential photographer, AI is here to enhance, not replace, our creativity. It can level the playing field and make art more accessible, allowing artists to focus on unique aspects of their work. The key is adapting and using these tools to boost our creative skills and potential.
Agree 100%. This is exactly the approach I've taken towards AI...a creative tool, not a replacement.
only 7minutes in and this is THE best basic body movement i’ve seen for so little work! WOW!!
I was trying this with a character and found "Layer via Copy" works better for isolating a body part than Layer via Cut if you don't want the white space afterwards.
Dave I think an updated version full tutorial is long due now :)
Wait you are still here, Thats so cool, I've been here since 2020 but haven't seen you after than Glad I got your channel again
Hello! I am a newbie and am very interested in this program! You have an excellent presentation of the material, very understandable for beginners! I really appreciate you sharing such useful information with us! Will wait new lessons and continuing the topic of animation and working with AI!
Good ! Thanks to this video, I can now create video with only the head of my dog who can speak 😂 I'm sending funny stuff with it to my wife 😂
With this video, I've leanrt a bit of photoshop and how to create a basic puppet for Ch. Animator :)
Damn. This is the type of thing I'm working on. So little time!
Imagine if you could feed photoshop a Rest mouth and an Ah mouth and have it generate the rest of your visemes. Nice to see a new video Dave!
That would be killer. I've tried mouth generation in Firefly and the results weren't great (yet)...but you might be able to do some interesting variations with generative fill in Photoshop. Maybe worth exploring more...
Amazing content, like always ❤... I'm hearing a 20 types of mouths tutorial 👀
Hahahaha...
Hooray for Character Animator!
Thanks for the tutorial. Is there any way to add wiggle animation to a limb in Character Animator? I'm adding my lip sync from scene audio and want to know if I can somehow add some wiggle animation to the hands too
There is a Wiggler behavior, but it's only for Illustrator artwork: czcams.com/video/zpwgKLGQDQg/video.htmlsi=uL1OHQ3B5L1hr0D-&t=203
Impressed by how far Adobe has come from old school Adobe flash to make animations...great tutorial
🔥🔥
You could close the mouth instead of keeping it open with the Mixer Brush tool, which can solve difficult problems in Photoshop. 15:17
Mixer brush is great! But if we want our character to talk, we'll want at least some jaw movement and and open mouth showing. For a silent background character it could work well though.
Very good!! And how to lip sync and move arms and legs??
This intro to rigging tutorial goes more in depth with how to do lip sync, arms, and legs: czcams.com/video/hK-DjtiPzRs/video.html
Thanks Dave once again very useful information and good tipps on using Ai with Character Animator..I would love to see you interview a some traditional cartoonest and get some opinions about the pro's and con's of this technology .. That's an amazing looking Tiger, does that mean when a 100 people put in the same prompt in Ai. They get the same thing? There is really a major transition happening at the moment in regards to AI..Trully an amazing tool, That I hope i can keep up with:)
Prompts are unique as well as an ever changing algorithm behind the scenes, so you will most likely not get the exact same results as I did. Agreed about the pros/cons with AI - that's a great idea!
I'm looking at teaching this application to middle school students this term, thanks for the great tutorial, I look forward to seeing what they come up with. While still learning the basics myself, I am curious to know if Character Animator has the ability to work with multiple angles of a character rather than a 2d puppet style of animation?
Some Character Animator puppets do have multiple views/angles, but they are all 2D. You will find more multiview characters in the desktop Pro version of the app.
VERY GOOD VIDEO DAVE, QUICK QUESTION: WHAT CAN WE EXPECT IN THE NEXT VERSION OF CH? CAN YOU GIVE US ANY HINTS?
Thanks! Nothing to announce currently.
This tutorial was very helpful and might come in handy somewhere in the future. However I'm just learning to get the hang of Fresco for making my background artwork. Should I spend my time to learn how to work with Fresco or should I just ask Firefly to make something for me?
Honestly both seem like valid workflows to me. Personally I LOVE Fresco and the illustration process, but backgrounds are probably one traditionally time consuming area I might turn to Firefly more for in the future to give myself more creative time to work on other stuff.
@@okaysamurai Any other person might have said "It's up to you to decide" So I am grateful for your honest opinion and that you are so straight forward with what you say. I'll give firefly a try. About Fresco I have to admit that the vector brushes are amazing.
Hello, your work is great. One question, how can we make the character walk forward towards the camera with these types of characters. I say this because of the complexity in designing these types of characters. Do you have training in this field?
Character Animator is more about side walking, but for front walking you would need to manipulate the character to do cycle layers frame by frame animations (like czcams.com/video/gv_2Upvtm-M/video.htmlsi=54OnswzWlkz-IYL_&t=281) or use motion library (like czcams.com/video/ZTevkEadskk/video.htmlsi=LeC8Vw-BmJwYeLBD&t=574).
Are you able to put a dragger on a toe tag? Seems only dragger on heel tag works for me since I updated. Thanks for the help! =]
I believe the recommendation for dragger is the heel; at least I think that's how we set up our example puppets? I thought toe would still work but just not as well, but maybe it doesn't at all...
@@okaysamurai in my situation I like to have a dragger on both so during an extreme run animation I can point the toe up or down after positioning where I want the heel before capturing a take
Gotcha. Yeah unfortunately I'm not sure how you would get that.
I would love to see you use Adobe Illustrator's text to vector and then animated in Adobe Character Animator. 😊
Oh, I just got to the end of the video and you covered Adobe Illustrator's text to vector! 🙈😆
Does firefly allow users to sue the content commercially ? (CZcams) freely? I think I read you can’t or am I mistaken?? Very very cool video. Love it
From the FAQ: "Outputs from generative AI features without the beta label can be used commercially." See www.adobe.com/products/firefly.html#faqs for more info!
hello, i just have one question may seems stupid but m still a beginner hh, how i can move the project to adobe character animator from photoshop. do i have to export it then import it to character animator. but it doesn't work with me tho
In Character, just go to File > Import and select your PSD file.
hi.. thanks for the video! question: how to make the assets arm follow our movements in cam?
That's body tracking! pages.adobe.com/character/en/body-tracker
@@okaysamurai i see!! thank you!!
Any suggestions on who can make a greate job and layer my image so it will be ready for use in Adbobe AC?

Thank you ! Will most definitely do 🤗
Pls create full playlist for complete rigging for human character . I think all rigging video are way to seperate bring one with full possible rig
This should do the trick: czcams.com/video/hK-DjtiPzRs/video.htmlsi=DKNBQsGSI1Pf8muh
Hi Dave, I’m looking for some guidance on managing multiple characters and multiple scenes, as I can see the structure within Ca rapidly getting out of hand. Have you covered this subject in any of your videos? I’ve watched most of them but can’t recall seeing this topic. Specifically, I have one character that will require multiple costume changes (for different videos) then multiple static backgrounds in different scenes. I’m trying to get a handle on how to manage that, any help would be gratefully appreciated.
The "Complete workflow" series is probably the best. I end up doing most of my compositing in After Effects, which I walk through in those. czcams.com/video/VhCKD5vl848/video.htmlsi=-Vf-_qwZmZS0_07z
@@okaysamurai cheers Dave 👍
When I click CMD X the head comes off but when I click CMD, Shft, and V, I get a black-and-white outline of the head??? what am I doing wrong.? Also, I clicking "remove the background," I am not using the lasso tool to remove the background.
Hmm, your settings might be different than mine, you could always just use the basic copy and paste commands. And yes, remove background is a new addition that works well too!
Hello sir, very well explained. Sir please tell that whether my laptop require GPU 3.3( graphics card) for Adobe animate and Adobe character animate. As I want to start my journey of making CZcams channel of 2D cartoon animated kids stories. But my laptop doesn't have in built graphics card. What should I do then if graphics card is required for these softwares. And whats the monthly subscription cost of Adobe animated and Adobe character animate. Please please guide me sir. Do u have any complete course to learn all this from start to end so that one is versed with making a good 2D animated kids story.🙏
The full page and pricing info can be found here, it differs from region to region: www.adobe.com/products/character-animator.html. And the best all around tutorials are probably the complete workflow ones: czcams.com/play/PLq4LynfF_r15MB40HNeLSw8Rebrd8os9D.html
Are you using motion capture? Is that available on Adobe Animate, or is it a plugin?
This is all in Adobe Character Animator. www.adobe.com/products/character-animator.html
@@okaysamurai Cool, I got that today. Thanks.
Hi, is it possible to turn an existing 3D model of a character in to talking avatar?
Yes, you could use the same techniques in this video to cut it apart and turn it into a 2D puppet. There are several characters on pages.adobe.com/character/en/characters that were made in 3D programs.
I always learn something i didnt expect from your videos.
Can i hire you to be my tutor?
My fulltime job as a designer at Adobe prevents me from taking on outside freelance work, but we do have a great group of people who do freelance Character Animator work listed up on adobe.com/go/ch_examples_thirdparty_en. Hopefully you can find someone with a skillset / style / budget there that might help!
Hi. My Adobe Animator Character program cannot see .psd file. Can you give me advice what to do?
This might help: czcams.com/video/7pgm_u4VkQk/video.htmlsi=65LpqYAUafPBQSlC&t=311
Could you take the same steps in this video on an actual photo image of an animal?
Yep!
14:38 - Please make a beak tutorial
I need this too, Please!🙏
I saw you moving your face and the tiger moved as well. I missed how you moved all the body parts, though.
If the character is set up correctly, the body will move with the head as you move around. The arms I show at 19:49. If that's too quick, you can check out czcams.com/video/hK-DjtiPzRs/video.htmlsi=SQOIiyesgQRIYqvZ&t=1568.
Great, it would be even better if it could automatically separate body parts.
How do you save the illustrator file to Character animator?
Just go to File > Import and select your Illustrator file. CH doesn't save the actual art file, it just references it like many video editing apps do, so keep your Illustrator file in the same spot and you should be good to go.
