I'm from the Bay Area in California. My Nauni had told me growing up, how my great-great grandfather sailed alone across the Atlantic from Lisbon and started a family in Rhode Island. She passed away in 2012 from cancer - but before she did, she began a search to find any living relatives in Portugal. She had found living relatives on one of the Azore islands that owned a horse ranch that we were told was over a century old. I know that she had been able to contact them somehow, but that point of contact was lost when she passed away. It's on my bucket list to visit Portugal, but more specifically to visit Lisbon and the Azores. Nauni never got to, so it turned into my mission to visit for her. She had gotten the chances to travel to Mexico many times, as well as Morocco and different places in the USA. But Portugal was the one place she really wanted to visit but never got to. Thank you for highlighting these majestic horses, and for showing some love to my distant relatives. And thanks to the CZcams algorithm for recommending this video to me!
Already at the beginning I was touched. What a dedication to save this breed! You could feel the emotions behind even through the camera. Those ponies look amazing! The movements are great. I hope they can be there for generations to come. Thank you so much Alyssa for taking us along sich a precious journey of discovery!
Oh, I absolutely adore these! I had never heard of them before, most likely because I have no real interest in smaller breeds. But these guys are absolutely lovely, they looked like a sized down version of a typical spanish horse, I love that!
oh my you are on the islands? are you per chance going to give the Garrano or the Sorraia breed a try? they are older than the Lusitano, and the Sorraia is considered an endangered breed but they are so beautiful! Enjoy your time in portugal!
incredibly good movement from such a small frame. and looks like they great drive from the rear end. Thank you for showing us these beautiful little horse.
Congratulations to the owners. All those years of hard work have payed off. Thanks Alyssa for this inspirational video. Cheers from Silvana from South America Uruguay 🇺🇾
A new breed for me and I think one of the most exceptional pony breeds you have ridden. What beautiful horses. Great conformation, a kind eye and bubbling with energy. 🎉🎉
I love that you are showcasing this breed! My family is Azorean-American and most people in the United States have no idea that the Azores exist or where they are located!
What a beautiful pony. I love their passion to share this with others. Thank you for filming these rides for all of us horse lovers older and young!🐴🐎❤😊
Their kind eyes, their movement, their refined looks...❤ Just beautiful! Thank you so much for showing us all these different breeds, mostly in their own countries! Love "traveling the world" 🌎 with you! 💕
I have never heard of the Terceira Pony. This is what I love about your channel - you introduce me to different breeds and recount their history and let us hear from the people who own them. What a valuable channel you have created! Love it! I have a Missouri Fox Trotter mare and love her and that smooth ride. Is the Terceira gaited also? I noticed they gait similar to a Pasafino, which is also gaited. But you make me want to get some of these breeds you show on your channel. thank you!
What a beautiful horse breed! I hadn't heard of this one before. Thank you for sharing it with the world! Also, of course for the benefit of this breed!
I have kinda heard of this pony. It is very beautiful and elegant. I never got what you got but I can see it now as that aspect of me never left. I love horses wholeheartedly.
I’m not sure when you were in Portugal but if you ever have the chance you MUST visit over the Golega (pronounced goal gaa) Horse Festival where the best of the Lusitano breed are presented. This is a week of many different activities and presentations, all aimed at showing the versatility, beauty and character of the breed. There are 2 sessions- one in Spring for mares and yearlings, and one in Autumn for the stallions. Go once and you will never forget it.
Beautiful confirmation on most! Wow! Can see some Arab dishing on some. Clearly descended from Europe and North Africa. Keep up the conservation work. So many breeds on the cusp of extinction.
Wao that is amazing didn’t know that breed but Nice looks like a small Lusitano - oh you made The same conclusion 😊 wonder what The DNA show - oh yes that canter looked very smooth but you are also a very good rider 😊
I'm sure you've been holding out on us. We don't need perfection. I know most owners would let you take their second best horse for a nice long scenic ride. No editing required.
100 Terceira Ponies in the world? Wow, that is rare and so endangered. Don't you wish you could ship them to Canada or the US like King Louis did with the 'Canadians'? And, they do look like Luso or PREs that got shrunk in the dryer. Perfect mini Iberians. It's hard to find a dreamy canter... 💓💓💓
Who loves discover the horse?
I love all of the content! Alyssa has taken us on so many adventures ❤

I loved the comment that they are like horses that had shrunk in the washing machine!

Lovely footage and amazing ponies...thank you for sharing with us
My dream pony as a kid.
Yes I have heard of them. They are essentially mini Lusitanos. They are very beautiful.

Another reason to want to go to Azores...sigh.
I had a riding school since I was 5.
Have you ridden the Asturian pony and Galician/Galego (in northwest Spain/Portugal)?
Haven't heard of the breed until now. Considering Portugal's geography, likely strong Barb influence. These ponies look like very small Lusitanos.
I'm sure you've been holding out on us. We don't need perfection. I know most owners would let you take their second best horse for a nice long scenic ride. No editing required.
what is the average weight of the terciera pony?

The gray they were lunging really needs a hoof trim!
