  • This project video is a complete build video showing you how I make one of our "Kidney Bean" purses.
The video shows all the construction steps, as well as tools used and material suggested to make one of these. This leather handbag is a great step up project if you have made any of our other bag projects.
There is a pattern pack available if you would like to purchase the patterns for this leather bag. We offer the patterns in PRINTED and DIGITAL versions. This is a large pattern on a piece of paper 3' x 4' so if you get the digital version you will need to have that printed out by a company with a large format printer. Here are links to both of the products:
    PRINTED VERSION: shop.dgsaddler...
    DIGITAL VERSION: shop.dgsaddler...
*We are currently waiting on the dies to come in for this purse. If you are interested in material packs to make this purse, we will offer those as soon as we get the dies in the shop. When we do we will put a link here to those as well as send an announcement out through the newsletter.

I got into leather craft about 4 years ago and, with the help of YT, have really enjoyed learning from different makers. I really enjoy that you are down to earth and explain things without a condescending tone. Thanks for your insight and thoughtfulness on these videos.

Great tutorial Don. There is a tool called a Saddlers seam turner. This has a notch you use to rub the welt, which helps it turn. You could easily make something out of some smooth hardwood with a notch filed in. A broom with a rounded end handle is also handy. Stand on the broom and republicans the seam up and down over the rounded end. Now off to buy a digital download.

Ok editing a darn predictive text typo has defeated me. Republicans should simply read as RUB.

Using weed whipper string laid down the center for the piping works good too.

Do not cut out for the tassel buttons until after you have them made. They are the hardest thing I have ever tried to make. The bag is beautiful but now I am struggling with the tassels.

Hey Don awesome bag. Looking forward to try one on my own... I hand stitch all my projects and was wondering if hand stitching is going to make sewing the welt or piping that much harder. The welt really adds to the bag and I don't want to do without it. Keep up the great work .

Don, get one of those magnetic parts bowls they sell in the tool sections of the big box stores or even Harbor Freight. That way when you remove your tacks as you sew, they will stick and not fall in the floor. When you end up stepping on them.

Awesome project. I don't do a lot of bags, but have done enough. Never with a welt though. Question, when sewing in the gusset, are you sewing right into the thread, from sewing the pipping on? Or are you trying to get just a little bit away. Seeing you set the guide, i am thinking your sewing right into the pipping stitch. Just trying to clarify this seam in my mind. Thanks!
