I agree about the window box as I like Laura’s choices but I am partial to all those plants and like the fragrance of those plants, I’d park a chair close enough to inhale as I had my morning tea or coffee.

I also got a chuckle from Aaron's "feral" comment. We refer to our grandkids who live on a farm near us as "free range"! Sounds pretty similar!

I grew up feral too. We hardly wore shoes as kids. We lived on a dairy farm and trod through all sorts of stuff! In summer we wore sandals to school and in winter sandshoes I think. We walked to and from school and mostly it was barefoot. We survived too. This was in Queensland Australia.

I agree with your comments, the most valuable lesson i learned from watching your videos was not to be affraid to move things and plants if you are not happy with them, or even just get rid of them completely. I found it very liberating, and made me open to experimenting in my garden, knowing it is not the end of the world if it doesn't work out. It is not a waste if it ends in you being happy with your space.

    • @gardeninggrandma5247
      @gardeninggrandma5247 Před 2 lety +6

So true about not being afraid to move or remove plants!!! I removed some day lilies last year that only bloomed for about 10 days and didn't really do much to enhance the garden. They were quite old. Today, there are newer varieties that bloom continuously that would be better suited to my garden. Thanks, Laura, for your inspiration!!

I grew up feral too! My family lived in the country but on a well used road. Our property was a full acre and our neighbors were a country block away. My paternal grandparents had many acres and a pond and lived just 5 miles away. We were all there every weekend, all weekend long, as well as for every holiday. It was the absolute BEST CHILDHOOD! My siblings and all my cousins were feral too and we all survived to adulthood.

I really liked seeing Aarons’ videos and look forward to more showing your responsibilities that help make Lauras’ garden work even more successful. Short film and voiceovers are perfectly acceptable. Id like to see your grass program - right down to how you mow those patterns. No need to be picky on topics; just go for it and film what you do. We all know this is a team operation so we’d be happy to see what the other half is working on. No one knows everything and gardening is a never ending learning process.

Dear Laura, I feel your pain over moving those perfect boxwoods in the formal garden. It hurts me, too; your pain is my pain. But, I firmly believe that once you do it, you will wish you had not waited. Besides, they are healthy and there's a good chance they will survive a move to another part of your garden. So, go ahead and move them. You'll be so happy you did. Love, Lisa

Good Morning! How about transforming the boxwood hedge area in the formal garden into a children’s garden/ fairy garden/ secret garden- might make a reason for the family to spend time in that area: tee-pee structures and an area to move Benjamin’s butterfly garden? A tea garden for Samantha with small scale furniture? I love having hidden surprise nooks to come upon❤️

I agree, the boxwood formation could be a maze for the kids. It would be so much fun for them.
Make that area into a kids play area with built in tree gardens with hidden spaces or holes under shrubs for them to run around and hide in.
      A magical hidden oasis.

With all that land for the adults, shouldn't some area be just for the kids? A place where they can play outdoors...horseshoes, mud kitchen, sandbox, bocce, king of the mountain, badminton, ring toss, corn hole, lawn bowling. Your neighborhood will be full of young children and your outdoor arcade will be the place to gather. Keep your kids in the sunshine and away from hours indoors on the electronics.

In the back formal garden you guys could plant your huge border but leave room in the middle for a “gate” (not for actual access but for the sense of beyond) that gives you a peek back to your borrowed landscape, the horses and gives you a place where you can wander to enjoy that view. Just an idea… I’ve seen it in a lot of English gardens.

I would have loved that boxwood formation when I was a kid! Replace the broken fountain with a sandbox, table or small tent and it's the perfect kid's hideaway protected from the wind. The larger portion (after removing the gravel) could be swing set and open play area. Then the remaining smaller portion past the boxwoods could be different "rooms"- the butterfly garden, etc. The perfect kid's playground that you can watch from the Hartley. Nevermind- just heard your vision for the area!

We really would like an aerial view after so we can see the full effect. I’m with Aaron on the formal boxwood circle…..take it out. I think once you remove the fence (36:47), that area will immediately open up! Sometimes having faith in the process will take you to the decision that is meant to be!!! In other words, I would wait and see what it all looks like when the driveway gravel is gone and the area is planted. That will give you a better perspective of whether or not the designed boxwoods should stay or go.

Laura, when you remove the fence near that lovely formal hedge structure it will open the space. Perhaps, you could put the entrance to that new design right at the center point of the hedge. Also, the incorporation of the corner garden will make the entire garden area larger. Just my thought. I love it and I'd try to save it, but that's me. Whatever you do, it'll be beautiful.

I haven't wanted to remove it because, well, I don't like to be wasteful and it keeps coming back. Aaron's comment about getting rid of your boxwood hedge because it doesn't bring you joy was the comment I needed to hear! It doesn't bring me joy, only anger, so why keep it around? Thanks Aaron - I'm grabbing my shovel tomorrow!

Try the no dig method. After watching Yuliya on Y garden I have converted huge areas of our lawn into garden beds. I got a huge collection of cardboard boxes from craigslist, laid them down and covered with mulch last spring. I cut out the cardboard and sod only in areas in which I wanted to plant immediately. Some people use compost over the cardboard. The cardboard and grass is all brown down and the bed is like a regular garden bed. The shrubs and perennials I had planted are breaking dormancy now. I garden in 6B.

Aaron, I love the way you are presenting your videos! If voice-over is more comfortable for you, keep doing it. Your videos have great information and video that they are interesting to watch. Also, my husband has enjoyed hearing the specs and recommendations you have shared about the implements and using them. He appreciates having insight into maintaining the infrastructure of a property. You are adding another "layer" of content.

I’m so excited to see more lawn care videos! Our grass is uneven and bumpy. We want to take on smoothing everything and improving the lawn, but are intimidated and unsure where to start. I also need help edging. Every time Aaron talks about lawn or gravel I’m all ears!

The water pond project, for the everyday person it did seem like such a short term "waste" but instead of viewing it as that, it became a teaching project. Something that was initially anticipated to be more long term permanent but do to an unexpected change, you were able to show us the flexibility of the product to remove and eventually reuse it elsewhere. The things you teach us that we ourselves don't think of!! Just 1 of many reason we love your channel ❤

Wow, thanks so much for answering my question about drip tape for versus drip tubing. You must get so many questions. I have had two 100 foot rows of vegetables. Just last year, I doubled that and made raised rows with steel decking. I actually almost submitted it for your raised garden beds but as I just put them in in the fall and I haven’t planted anything yet. I also put a small poly tunnel in the fall as well so am trying to figure out to do irrigation for everything including my my inground beds. You have provided me lots of inspiration so thank you for the great videos.
