- Raja and Albert are Bornean orangutans who have lived at the Gdansk Zoo for more than two decades. Albert was born on March 26, 1972 from Munich Zoo in Germany, and came to Gdansk in October 1997. Raja was born on January 18, 1972 in Rostock. She came to the Olive Zoo in January 2000.
Raja has an artistic soul and enjoys painting. Albert prefers literature and DIY. The animals form a compatible pair and, noteworthy, are the only representatives of their species in Polish zoos.
They usually make a compatible pair, but Raja, as an artist, likes to indulge her passions in solitude. With loud smacks, she signals to her caregivers that it's time for artistic work. She gets candle crayons (non-toxic, because it's not only the color that counts, but also the taste), a drawing block and gets down to creative work. He doesn't find every work successful and quickly destroys them. For those worthy of display, she charges a fee in the form of her favorite treats - bananas, nuts or dried apricots. Raja, as an artist, is a bit eccentric likes to wear the clothes she gets to play with - most preferably dresses, hats and tights.
Albert is a lover of literature and enjoys listening to books read to him by his caregivers. He especially liked Jane Austin's novel Pride and Prejudice, although he also listened with interest to the adventures of Winnetou.
Orangutans observe the behavior of workers and quickly learn to repeat tasks. Raja can sweep, mop the floor or do laundry of the clothes he gets to play with. Albert is a do-it-yourselfer, assembling swings from fire hoses, unscrewing screws and building beds from wood chips and cardboard boxes.
Orangutans are smart, have the intelligence of a few years old, and their DNA overlaps 97 percent with that of humans. The orangutan is the largest and heaviest mammal with an arboreal lifestyle. A male can reach a weight of 90 kg.
Unfortunately, due to the destruction of their natural habitat through deforestation, mainly for the establishment of oil palm plantations, illegal trade and commercial hunting, the species' numbers have declined dramatically. Between 1950 and 2010, the population of Bornean orangutans declined by more than 60%. By 2025, their populations will have declined by another 22%.

Albert urodził się 26 marca 1972 roku z monachijskim zoo w Niemczech, do Gdańska przyjechał w październiku 1997 roku. Raja urodziła się 18 stycznia 1972 roku w Rostocku. Do oliwskiego ZOO przyjechała w styczniu 2000 roku.
Raja ma artystyczną duszę, lubi malować. Albert preferuje literaturę i majsterkowanie. Zwierzęta tworzą zgodną parę i co warte uwagi, są jedynymi przedstawicielami swojego gatunku w polskich ogrodów zoologicznych. Zazwyczaj tworzą zgodną parę, jednak Raja jako artystka, lubi oddać się swoim pasjom w samotności. Głośnymi cmoknięciami daje znak swoim opiekunom, że czas na pracę artystyczną. Dostaje kredki świecowe (nietoksyczne, bo nie tylko kolor się liczy ale i smak), blok rysunkowy i przystępuje do twórczej pracy. Nie każde dzieło uznaje za udane i szybko je niszczy. Za te godne wystawienia pobiera opłatę w postaci ulubionych smakołyków - bananów, orzechów czy suszonych moreli. Raja, jak to artystka, jest trochę ekscentryczna lubi zakładać ubrania, które dostaje do zabawy - najchętniej sukienki, kapelusze i rajstopy. Albert to miłośnik literatury lubi słuchać książek, które czytają mu opiekunowie. Szczególnie spodobała mu się powieść Jane Austin „Duma i uprzedzenie”, choć z zaciekawieniem słuchał też przygód Winnetou.
Obserwują zachowania pracowników i szybko uczą się powtarzać zadania. Raja potrafi zamiatać, zmywać podłogę czy zrobić pranie ubrań, które dostaje do zabawy. Albert to majsterkowicz, montuje huśtawki z węży strażackich, odkręca śrubki i buduje legowiska z wiórów drzewnych i kartonów.
Orangutany są bystre, mają inteligencję kilkuletniego dziecka, a ich DNA w 97 proc. pokrywa się z DNA człowieka. Orangutan jest największym i najcięższym ssakiem prowadzącym nadrzewny tryb życia. Samiec może osiągnąć wagę 90 kg.
Niestety, ze względu na niszczenie ich naturalnego środowiska poprzez wylesianie, głównie w celu tworzenia plantacji palmy olejowej, nielegalnego handlu i polowań w celach komercyjnych, liczebność tego gatunku dramatycznie się zmniejszyła. W latach 1950-2010 populacja orangutanów borneańskich zmniejszyła się o ponad 60%. Do 2025r. ich populacje zmniejszą się o kolejne 22%.
It's amazing, animals are so much like humans in many ways. Each has its own personality , distinct likes and dislikes even it they are siblings and have been raised in the exact environment.
