  • From HS2.org.uk The Wendover Dean Viaduct "Located south of the town of Wendover in Buckinghamshire, the 450m-long viaduct will be the first major railway bridge in the UK to be built with a ‘double composite’ structure, using significantly less carbon-intensive concrete and steel in comparison to a more traditional design.
Once construction is complete, the historic field boundaries and hedgerows will be recreated to provide uninterrupted access for farmers and local residents. A mix of trees and shrubs commonly found across the Chiltern chalk hills will be used for new woodland planting around the viaduct, including Oak, Beech, Hazel and Wild Cherry."
    From 6:00 "Small Dean Viaduct
The striking 345m long Small Dean Viaduct, just south of Wendover, has gained design approval and will carry the HS2 line across the A413, Small Dean Lane and the Chilterns rail line.
After crossing the viaduct, northbound trains will pass the town of Wendover in a short tunnel designed to reduce the environmental impact of the scheme."

Excellent video, amazing how much land is needed to construct a railway line, all done by magic and not a worker in view, The Small Dean section is good, shame it can't be shown on National TV.....thanks.

Fast railways were made so much quicker in the 19th Century with picks, shovels, barrows and manpower than now with all this modern machinery. Will it ever be finished, that is, the bit that has not been postponed?

Much more rigorous health and safety standards to follow, both with the structural integrity of what they have to build and the wellbeing of the works... also labour is much more expensive

Interesting! The second section 6:00 is not Wendover Dean?

Thanks! Didn't realise it was split into 2, the second part is called "Small Dean Viaduct"

How is it the French & Germans, Spanish, and Italians manage to go up and down, around bends and we have to have very expensive viaducts bridges, tunnels, and massive earthworks just to go in a straight line? This is the reason for the prohibitive costs, which have in turn led to the cancellation of HS2 Birmingham to Manchester link.

The link to Manchester may have been cancelled but HS2 trains will still travel to Manchester, Liverpool and Scotland by joining the West Coast Main line at a junction at Sandacre in Staffordshire near Lichfield

If you compare with the width of nearby vehicles there is plenty of space for two tracks.

yes. the scale is massive. Once the wider decks are fully on top it should make sense. These are just the undergirders, pylons and columns.

The Chilterns, Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, promoting itself with tattered remains of woodland, rusting girders and bleached concrete flung about the chalk and flint landscape

Get a grip, we can't rely on Victorian infrastructure (Maybe you could!), it's a building site and when it's completed it will be restored as much as possible to its original landscape, it is hardly a "forest" and if they plant an equivalent"woodland" nearby that will do for the wildlife, they are not as fussy as you!?!

@@TomTomicMic.. don't kid yourself - HS2 is an environmental disaster of epic proportions & Britain's biggest infrastructure mistake in half a century.
HS2 Ltd have already incurred numerous fines for multiple breaches of environmental issues.
Thousands of trees planted along the route in Warwickshire where the vast majority perished due to lack of aftercare.
The pollution of streams, rivers & other waterways with toxic chemicals.
The bulldozing of mile upon mile of hedgerows containing nesting birds when they specifically said they'd wait until the nesting season was over .. the list goes on.
Billions of pounds wasted & what's left? Nothing more than a shuttle service between west London & Birmingham & within a decade of opening (in about 50 years time given the current rate of progress), will be nothing more than a glorified cycle path.
