  • The Traxxas Xmaxx is easily one of my favorite RC cars I've ever owned because of the beating it takes time after time, but like everything it's not perfect and could use a few upgrades. In this video I explain my modifications to the truck and the ones that you should do to yours!

    Finally bit the bullet and bought myself an xmaxx last week,did the shoe goo drywall tape on the body,ordered rpm hubs/pins then went out and bashed it pretty hard stock,I couldn't believe how well it held up,my only issue was 'why didn't I buy one sooner lol' The only part you didn't mention which i think it needs is the roof skidplate,the Traxxas one that bolts through the inner roof bars,ties it all together nicely😊 I've now ordered all the other parts you've listed,so I thank you for that👍but my wallet doesn't lol 😁

      Glad you're loving yours, it's a great truck! It isn't perfect and it isn't indestructible, but a few key mods make it a fantastic truck. In my opinion it's the best large scale truck on the market, it's extremely durable for its size. It's also pretty cheap to fix haha, any other large scale truck makes your wallet even more angry haha

    I pretty much have the same upgrades, but I recently bought a new xmaxx and removed the entire electronic system and replaced it with a max 5 combo with the 1100kv motor, wfo stuff and 1.5 mod gears. It's a freaking BEAST now. I'm still testing it out, but the extra 1/5 power system is amazing!

      @@crazycamkalani I just tested my max 6 18/47 geared xmaxx against my max 5 25/35 geared xmaxx with the bigger motor. Yeah the 25/35 gearing is way faster and I can do wheelies even at full speed. Hehe. You can tell the extra torque too. The battery on the max 6 xmaxx does last way longer though. I can probably do a backflip with the max 5 xmaxx but I try to avoid that. The wheelies go way longer on the max 5 xmaxx. The max 6 xmaxx has stock tires and the Max 5 xmaxx has the duratrax lockups x 22mm belted tires. I had to reglue the stock tires again after this run.

      Yeah I have actually never broken any in all my years of Xmaxx carnage, so from my experience it's not necessary to upgrade. Even if they were to break they're real cheap, and if you go over to metal you have to be careful to not over tighten the cap so you don't destroy the shock bladder(I made that mistake before on a different RC)

      Thanks you!! Honestly even though I absolutely love this truck I wouldn't really recommend this as a first truck, I would highly recommend something smaller first like a 1/10 or 1/8 scale, for example the Maxx is an amazing truck, it it's basically an Xmaxx that got hit with a shrink-ray and that one is easily the strongest truck box-stock. The Xmaxx is one of the best trucks on the market but at the same time it's a huge heavy truck with big expensive batteries. Definitely buy one, but to start out I recommend getting something smaller so you can get used to caring for Lipo batteries and get used to driving them.
      The wrap is from Darkside Studios, that specific one is called the Ruckus. They make that wrap for all kinds of stuff 👍

    Great video mate! I just ordered a new X-MAXX and this video really helped me understand what i can expect to be ding in the process of having fun and breaking things! I've heard from a few people that the pinion gear definitely is a weak spot with the grub screw coming loose pretty quickly. People have been taking the grub screw out and putting some red loctite on the threads to stop it coming loose. Do you do this to yours? Cheers from Australia. Thanks for sharing mate!

    • @crazycamkalani
      @crazycamkalani  Před rokem

      Yes, adding more loctite to the pinion should help keep it from slipping. I use blue loctite because it's easier to remove than the red stuff, what I do is I let a tiny bit of loctite get onto the very end of the grubscrew, that way there is a very small amount between the motor shaft and grubscrew. Thanks for watching!

      @crazycamkalani  Před 3 lety

      The wrap itself is from darkside industries, and I sticker bombed it, so anything that doesn't look like a zombie is all stickers I threw on it haha. I highly recommend Turnigy batteries, they're cheap and work really well. Get yourself a name brand charger like Hitec or Venom and get the cheapo lipos with a good warranty, I go with turnigy for most of my lipos. Most packs put out almost exactly the same performance so just go cheap with them so you can have more in your arsenal!

    Man, that was informative...thank you for sharing! I was literally taking notes. I’m new to all this and have a dumb question...how do the silicon ear plugs improve throttle response/traction and where do you install them? Thank you again. Excellent video!

    • @crazycamkalani
      @crazycamkalani  Před 3 lety +3

      Thank you for the kind words I appreciate it! Basically the silicone earplugs, by them being super stiff what it does is it "locks" up the center diff where you would normally put some sort of oil (so the differential can do its job for traction). By tightening up that center diff you lose a bit of overall traction but you distribute power more evenly front and rear so the truck will wheelie/backflip/launch harder, when the diff is loose you lose power on the wheels that are up in the air

    • @crazycamkalani
      @crazycamkalani  Před 4 lety +2

      With the newer versions of it it should be fine, I've seen people run taller gearing than 20/50 without issues! When I bought mine it was when a good amount of ESCs turned into fireballs because of faulty switches, I never had an issue with it myself but I swapped them over just to have smoother power delivery.

      @crazycamkalani  Před 3 lety +2

      So hopefully you know that RC diffs are intended to use silicone oil to tune how much the diff will move for a limited-slip effect, you can buy these silicone putty earplugs to effectively "lock" up a diff because they're super thick, it drives as though the diff is locked but it can still move just a little bit for durability. If you get the right earplugs theyre made of pure silicone putty. Honestly with your Maxx you should just drive it as is, you probably won't need to upgrade much on it, it has a really good diff setup box stock

The max6 power leads are 10awg so if you're already using their batteries and if you can get ahold of the male Traxxas leads it's not too hard to install them on the max6. Charger wise I use the Hitec X2 and Venom Quad chargers, the Hitec one out of those two is much better.

    • @crazycamkalani
      @crazycamkalani  Před 3 lety +1

      Another thing you could do is put different(larger) connectors on the max6 itself and use an adapter, but I definitely wouldn't recommend doing that because it's one more possible failure point

    The only issue i have seen with the RPM arms is that they open at the ends, which does 2 things, lets the pins fall out, and usually splits the arm down the middle.
    Threaded pins stops that and makes the RPM arms way more durable than the stock arms.
    Also - soaking your RC parts in WD40 doesn't make them more flexible, has been disproven plenty of times. Still dont know why people do it 😂

    • @crazycamkalani
      @crazycamkalani  Před 4 lety +2

      When I was running the rpm arms they kept snapping in half between the inner hingepins and the lower shock mount, similar to where my stock arms snap, but I get 10x the life out of the stock arms than I did with the RPMs. I got bored of hitting up RPM every week for a replacement so I just went back to stock and it's been fine for me 🤙
      And as for the WD40 trick it doesn't work with everything but when it comes to Traxxas' plastic it does in fact make them much more flexible, I havent done it to my xmaxxes but it made a huge difference with my Slash arms

      As far as I'm aware the only ones that had fire issues were the 6s models that had improper soldering on the connectors. I haven't really seen stock ESCs blow but they do tend to fail. The ones I've used seem to have pretty good safeguards on them to shut them down before any real issues happen. I've had more Castle ESCs catch fire than my Traxxas ones to be honest lol

    Kinda old video so maybe a little late to comment lol...BUT, I purchased the Tekno / GDS gears per your video but they say do NOT use the Traxxas pin system for the mesh. Seems you have changed your gears out quite a bit so I was wondering how you go about meshing? It seems like it might be a little tricky to mesh properly on this truck without using the pin system? I haven't done it yet so no idea. And I wonder why GDS says do not using the pin system? Is it like a size thing?

      @@chrisrodriguez206 WIth stock Traxxas gears that pin system is great. WIth Tekno/GDS spur they recommend you mesh it manually without the pin system. I set the pin system first for 18/50 which is the gearing I am running with a tekno pinion/gds spur and it was way too tight. So I moved the pins to 20/50 and they had too much slop, even though I think I could of ran it awhile in this setup but I wanted it tighter. So and the end of the day I removed the pins and used the paper method between the spur and pinion without the Traxxas pins...perfect mesh. It's definitely more of a pain to do since you have to hold the motor and put pressure on the pinion while you're screwing in from the bottom of the chassis but if you want the perfect mesh that's what you have to do.
