Hughie is a distant cousin of mine. He was my grand father's cousin. And my dad's 2nd cousin. Strangely enough I heard about hughie but my family never mentioned we were related. One day I was playing a game called rock band..on one of the loading screens for the song green grass.. it mentioned hughie thomasson. Which is my last name.. thought it was kinda strange but figured meh...no way could we be related. Years later I looked him up and noticed how much my father and he looked similar. Called my grandparents on a whim to ask if they knew anything.. Whelp come to find out they knew the whole time. Unfortunately Hughie had passed at this point so I never got to meet him I'm only 28.. but man even knowing I'm only his 3rd cousin...gives me such pride! Thanks for the video and the short snip-it's of Hughie. It's somewhat hard to find anything out about him on here but every once in awhile I'll think about him and go watch some old clips of him and think man...if I only I could've got to meet him. Brother... you've got Rock N Roll Royalty in your blood . I saw him with Skynyrd in 96 at Riverbend Cincinnati and he blew me away then and Green Grass and High Tides is just like Freebird.....it should be part of the National Anthem !

Hughie is my favorite guitarist, hands down!
He autographed a black and white photo a neighbor in Jacksonville took in the late 1970’s at the Jacksonville Coliseum.
Many years later in 2005, I got to meet him backstage at the Birchmere in Alexandria, VA. I had that old black and white photo from Jacksonville Coliseum with me. I said, ‘I’m lookin for this guy here’ showing him the photo. He replied, ‘Well, that would be me’ and he signed it ‘Hughie.’ A thrill of a lifetime for me.

Y’all did a great job with “Steam on the Blacktop”. Beautiful song. His solo was perfect. By the way, I grew up in Forsyth, GA and my grandparents lived in Macon, near Ridge Ave. My Southern Rock claim to fame is my grandfather, Duane Baucom, who carved the gravestones for both Duane Allman and Berry Oakley. He worked for Clarke Memorials on Ingleside Drive, if I remember correctly.

Hughie was a friend of mine during his Skynyrd day's he was one Hell of a Guitar player and a Great guy..... Miss him
I was a junior in high school when I fell in love with the just released "Outlaws" album. The Outlaws brought 3-part harmony to the fore along with a very strong guitar sound (i.e., we don't need no stinkin' keyboards, LOL). Speaking of that guitar sound, the blend of Billy's fat Les Paul sound with Hughie's Fender loud cutting leads was truly an amazing combo. Hughie would bring some rhythmic, almost clickers-clack, country elements in even the most powerful solos - that I think was a Hughie signature giving him a one of kind playing style that was the driving force for the band. I loved Hughie's voice too. It had the right huskiness against Billy's sweeter more velvet voice.
Lucky to have seen The Outlaws with Chris many times. The one show that stands out was 1990 at La Vela in Panama City Beach. I spent time with them that day and night and the next night. Their show was totally awesome! Hughie would push Chris out front in the spotlight! Of course, Chris would shine as he always has and does to this day! The next night, ARS played next door at Spinnakers. We all went to the show. Ronnie Hammond (RIP) ask the band to come up and jam with them. Pretty awesome couple of days spent with these guys! Hughie was so sweet! He talked about getting back to Macon and eating at H&H and how he loved MaMa Louise and her fried chicken, lol. Great guy, good friends and wonderful memories! Dajhelon Studios in Rochester, NY about 1 hour away from my hometown of Buffalo. I believe that part of Hittin' The Road Live was recorded there as well. I used to see the Outlaws all the time in Buffalo during that era and became a big fan as a result.

I saw you guys in Springfield MA. We gave your roadie several Holyoke Firefighters Bagpipe Band T-Shirts for the Band. I hope they gave them to you. You haven’t heard anything until you’ve heard my rendition of Green Grass on my Pipes. Sounds better than a Chinese restaurant full of cats preparing to be dinner😮

Chris thanks for the demonstrations and the great stories I remember getting to set up the new guitars for you guys that you bought from us when I was a luthier at Music Warehouse in Louisville Kentucky after you had your equipment stolen. You gave us some tickets for a great show you did at Jim Porters in Louisville that night...great times.
One thing I learned from Hughie is if you like to play like him, you gotta play as clean as it gets. And to do that, you have to be precise, articulate, and subtle, all at the same time. And that’s just for rhythm and melody. And then kick ass for leads! Overdrive pedals have their place, but some players use them like a crutch. I won’t use them to cover my playing with mud and dirt when playing clean is much easier on the ears.

Nino Catanzaro told me once that Hughie was his favorite person that the ever met..
I saw his very first show with the Outlaws in Hilton Head, SC April 1989
Used to see the Outlaws every year in the late 70's early 80's when they hit the Buffalo, NY area. After a concert at a club in Lockport, a couple friends and I hung out by the bus for some autographs. The guys came out and were talking to us, Henry went in the bus and brought out a big jug of wine and passed it around and we shot the shit for a while. 40 years later I still have that signed concert flyer I took off the wall and the picks they gave me.
Hughie was one of the best that Skynyrd ever had. The he was a master of a stratto caster and one of the best that’s ever been

I like your channel. Many years ago I saw the original lineup. Hughie was Amazing & still one of the greatest unsung guitarists of all time. It's a little disconcerting to hear you mention how clean his sound was & yet your amp is really muddy sounding. Still, Southern Rock is the best - wish they still made that kinda music...
Always surprised lso many Southern rock bands came from Florida I would have thought they came from Georgia Alabama Mississippi Any reason?

That is awesome but I remember years ago I seen Huey playing a telacaster but found out he had some work done to it he was experimenting and he put a humbucker in one of his Teles, and I actually found the blueprint guitar I wish this was designed and wound up with one of the baddest get tired of ever played
