Squale's Titanium Tudor Pelagos Killer? + Why Their Dive Watches Are So Underrated: Master 120 ATM

  • When it comes to dive watches, few brands can hold their own against the likes of Rolex, Omega, Panerai, Blancpain, Tudor, and many others. And yet, in 2024, Squale still remains the highest achieving and most underrated manufacturer of Swiss professional dive watches. Why is this? And does Squale's new release for 2024 deservedly capture the spotlight compared to the overhyped, overpriced, and underperforming offerings from the predictable brands mentioned earlier? Join me as I explore, analyze, discover the hidden depths, and share the pros and cons in this video review of the new Squale Master Titanium 120 ATMOS automatic dive watch. What do you think about this new release? Please share in the comments.

Yet another outstanding video! The production quality is top-notch, and I commend you for keeping the background music at a pleasant volume, allowing me to hear your words clearly. As someone who occasionally struggles with tinnitus, I often have to rely on closed captions due to intrusive background music in videos. I feel some sorrow of the direction of the channel.
I understand that specialisation is the way to go (and I understand it is a no longer just a hobby but a business), but I miss the old spirit of the channel when it wasn't all about watches. It was about clothing, art, architecture, history, philosophy and so much more. It made a symbiosis of all these different aspects into an overall life style. The channel brought all this together in a way that really made it unique.

I have to admit there is just something about the look and feel of a Squale. The ergonomics are fine tuned for a near perfect fit. They are a tool watch first and foremost but have that subtle yet elegant refinement that is often elusive in modern watches. I really like the overall design of this particular model but I’m still very partial to the 1521. I always enjoy and look forward to all of your videos knowing that you’re giving an honest opinion and review, but especially so when you review brands such as Squale as it is one of those near and dear to my heart. A great look at this piece. When I saw it, I decided it had to go on the list. It's big, sure, but I love my steel 1521 despite my small wrist for all the reasons you observed about its proportions. This one is tubby, but it won't be a daily d(r)iver anyway. A huge step for the brand, and a knockout in the use of titanium for an independent brand!

To me it is just another Seiko design with crown at 4:00. I like their watches but the dial design of the crown offset above the name is irritating. I want to move it to center or not at all. Maybe only on the crown. The price is ok on them but I find other watches basically the same for less. I understand what it takes to make watches and I appreciate that cost. You are fair at describing them. Bono amigo bellissimo.

I am an avid Squale fan, I have 16 of them, including all three of the Squale Master limited editions (Militare, Comsubin and MFO) . I'm pleased the Master has now been added to the catalogue as a permanent part of the collection but the colour way of this one is a bit bland for me. I far prefer the Comsubin to this first release of a non-LE version but hopefully they will add other versions in due course. The bracelet is a bit of a miss for me with that butterfly clasp but hopefully Squale will change this in future........ I'm still a Squale fan though!

I currently own the Tudor Pelagos LHD, but I’m contemplating adding one of the Squale Master Titanium watches to my collection. The Squale’s design appeals to me, and it holds up well in comparison to my Pelagos. It is slightly thicker and has a longer lug-to-lug measurement than the Pelagos. I wonder how much of this additional thickness can be attributed to the domed crystal.
Here's a comparison I made between the two watches for those who are interested.
    1. Tudor Pelagos LHD:
    o Case Size: 42mm
    o Case Finish: Satin
o Case Materials: Grade 2 Titanium
o Case Back Finish: Brushed Stainless Steel with Serialized Screw-in Case Back
o Weight: 148 grams (Head Only)
o Functions: Time with Running Seconds, Date Display, Helium Escape Valve
    o Thickness: 14.45mm
    o Lug-to-Lug Length: 47mm
    o Lug Width: 22mm
o Dial: Black dial, “PELAGOS” in Red, Roulette Date Wheel
o Luminous: Beige “Slightly Aged” Super-LumiNova
o Handset: White “Snowflake” handset with Beige “Aged” Super-LumiNova
o Bezel: Unidirectional Titanium, Black Ceramic Insert with Beige “Slightly Aged” Super-LumiNova 60-Minute Scale
    o Crystal: Flat Sapphire
o Movement: Tudor Caliber MT5612-LHD (COSC), ~70 Hrs. Power Reserve
    o Water Resistance: 50 atm, 500 Meters, 1,640 Feet
o Bracelet: 22mm Titanium Bracelet, Micro-adjust Stainless Steel Clasp and Diver’s Extension
    o Retail Price: $4,575 USD
    2. Squale Master Titanium:
o Case Size: Just under 42mm
    o Case Finish: Brushed
o Case Materials: Grade 5 Titanium
o Case Back Finish: Brushed Titanium Gr. 5 with Screw-In-Case Back
o Weight: 131 grams (Head Only)
o Functions: Time with Running Seconds, Date Display, Helium Escape Valve
    o Thickness: Approximately 16.15mm
    o Lug-to-Lug Length: About 49mm
    o Lug Width: 20mm
o Dial: Black Dial, "MASTER" in Orange, 3-layer sandwich dial with Brushed Applique Indexes
    o Luminous: Super-LumiNova “Old Radium”
    o Handset: Brushed Finish
o Brezel: Monodirectional, Brushed Black Ceramic, Super-LumiNova 60-Minute Scale
o Crystal: Domed Sapphire, 4mm thick
o Movement: Sellita SW200-1 Elabore Automatic, 38 Hrs. Power Reserve
    o Water Resistance: 120 ATM, 1,200 Meters, 4,068 Feet
o Bracelet: 20mm Titanium Butterfly, no Diver’s Extension
    o Retail Price: $2,332 USD
Let me know if you find any errors.

Well the new release of the Aquastar Model 60 is very appealing, when comparing with another brand in it's tier. T4YC. Very educational. It is a great watch, but definitely, proportionally it's thickish. And the faux, is a bit faux. But at 2K'ish it's good value. The type 2 Ti wears really well, and has a better colour and look than the type 5 here, so I don't think it's a serious rival to the Pelagos. But I believe that watch is near perfect.

  • @Theo-ul8qm

I agree with TGV's conclusion here that Squale is not more popular because, in large part, of marketing. They simply don't have the marketing muscle of a Tudor or even a Christopher Ward. They also, I think, don't produce that many watches, so they don't need that much marketing in order to sell their stock.
However, I still think we need to acknowledge that Squale have other issues that limit their popularity. One, which TGV has alluded to here, is that they make design blunders. The poor luminescence of the sandwich dial, lack of lume pip on the bezel, poor differentiation between the hands in low light and butterfly clasp are 4 examples from the watch discussed in the video. A brand of Squale's history and experience shouldn't make these mistakes in my opinion, and issues like these are not restricted to this model.
Their history of making Rolex homages in also something that, I believe, is detrimental to their brand image. They've stopped doing this, so I think they realized this too.
I think Squale can only grow going forward, because I do think they make good watches. They just have to find and cement their place in the market.

Good to get some historical provenance to this brand. I'm just not a fan of titanium at all. I prefer the heft of steel. Totally agree with the negative comments around COSC vs pricepoint. I absolutely love the case shape and the DeepSea SeaDweller chasing 4mm sapphire. That makes a huge difference. Date being framed is a no from me too. Overall though, I really like it, just not the pricepoint, but I'm sure a 20% plus discount would persuade me otherwise. Great video my friend

Cracking watch. I think the lume colour compliments the Ti and the case is superb. I think these compete directly with Longines/Tudor. Ok, Longines' movement is better in every way, but Tudor Kinessis are very average: I'd rather a Selita - far more reliable, easier to service and fix. And the Pelagos bezel's numbers can drop off! As for the bracelet, they've taken the Blancpain route - bracelets are for topside smart so don't need dive extensions. Rubber is far superior for diving and a nice strap is included. The big competition is internal - the 1521 takes some beating. Total bargain as well.

  • @timbaker4879

Squale proper divers are always stupendously tooltastic. I bought a grade 5 titanium San Martin diver - now there’s a bargain, finishing is superb! O&U

  • @jwags24
    @jwags24 Před 4 měsíci

I struggle with this one. I feel they made decisions too far in each direction of either design or function. For instance, they made it 120 ATM making it seem like it’s a tool watch. But then they removed the orange second hand and gave it poor lume with the aged look. So we have a 15mm thick watch that is neither the best at its job as a tool watch but isn’t the best daily wear either due to its thickness. I’d like to see a separate skin diver collection from Squale that’s slimmed up for the every day person. Thanks for the excellent overview !

  • @kjeldpedersen666

    Hi TGV
Always thought that Squale’s main stronghold was the case design. Not only for the purpose but aesthetically too. And this one in titanium looks even more futuristic...
But it’s big and not least thick. A 1500 m diver necessary have to be...wish I had the wrists to wear it.
I’ve pretty much have given up on wearing divers, except occasionally my Seamaster 300 when I’m sipping a vodka martini.
Think you’re right that Squale kind of sits between two chairs with the marketing. It surely seems to be a very capable tool watch but compromises seems to have been made to make it appealing to a broader audience.
    Keep up the good work👍

I love sqauale but as I've mentioned before the ti variations have run their course imo. Although for ultra deep diving it makes sense. Spot on with the faux patina, I instantly thought they were going for bond seamaster look and I'm glad you mentioned it. I'd still be interested in owning one and think this ticks the box for anyone looking for a more than capable diver with a cool history.

    • @theurbangentry
      @theurbangentry  Před 4 měsíci +1

Excellent question. Thank you for asking. With regards to this sample that was loaned in to make the review, I could not find any discernible issues in quality. However, I too have heard things and seemly more now than before. While it would be disingenuous to comment on issues I have experienced myself, this leads me to advise tried and test method of recommending ADs that go beyond others in making sure the watch you buy is as it should be. I have purchased Squale watches from both Marc at LIW and Gnomon, who are both ADs for Squale and the watches were perfect as a result. I can not speak for ordering directly from them however, as I have never personally done so and mostly likely what not do so. I also like to minimize as much risk as possible when buying a watch, no matter how much I love the brand or who they are.
I hope that helps, thanks again.

I really wish Squale would make the 1521 with more modest dimensions. Literally no one was asking for a watch that can go 1200m, but I'm sure many would absolutely love to see one 38-40mm (*including* the bezel) and 11-12mm thick. I know I wouldn't think twice about buying one. The thickness is a big deal. 200m of water resistance is fine if it means the watch will look and wear better!
(I know the Super-Squale has those dimensions, but I... really don't like the styling.)
P.S. Also please no more fake patina. :(
