Fun fact - my mum knew a tree surgeon who went on holiday to Shetland purely because there were no trees there!!
hahahaha that is awesome! Sounds like a sitcom
Lol 😂
I’m from Shetland and I love your channel so I’m glad you’ve been :)
I love that you provide information without blasting loud music to drown out you voice
As an Orcadian, I'm delighted to see the North Isles featured. Feel free to come to Orkney too 😄
I'd love to visit Shetland and Orkney someday, the landscape looks beautiful and the history is phenomenal too. Best wishes from England
@@gogledhol you'll get a warm welcome in both Orkney and Shetland. Personal recommendations would be to visit Shetland for Up Helly Aa, and Orkney for the Ba Game 😎 both extremely cool/exciting traditions.
I was in Orkney on my very first trip to Britain in 2012. I really want to return some day!!
Great video although I'd like to point out there are things open after 5pm- the Chinese and Indian (x2) restaurants, Magnos restaurant, The Lerwick, Shetland and Grand and Queens hotel and the Steak house are open till 10-11 and the Fish and Chip shops are open till 9. Also there are 3 general shops and the pubs are open till 10pm (pubs are open till 1am when covid restrictions lift) and both the Co-Op and Tesco supermarkets are open till 10pm also.
Shame you missed my boat when you were filming at the Museum!
I had been watching this guys vids for years then just forgot about this channel for a couple of years but glad I’ve found it again and subscribed. Always great content.
My great grandmother came from Shetland. Her family emigrated to Karamea in New Zealand in 1874.
I lived there for eight years .
We called it the " land of the force 9 fog "
Force nine gale blasting and you can not see six feet in front of you !
As a born and bred Shetlander, I always am wary of videos describing Shetland but really enjoyed your video. A few things I didn't quite agree with, and I think you were referring to the Mousa broch, but mostly a great video. It was lovely seeing clips from all over Shetland, not just Lerwick. And especially Northmavine where I have lived all my life. I was interested to hear that your ancestors came from Shetland, but couldn't make out the writing on the gravestones, or which graveyard they were in. The old circular graveyard in Hillswick, perhaps? Please come back to visit again.
I didn’t know about the Norway connection. Looks like such a charming place. You pack so much great info into a video. It’s impressive!
You didnt know? The norwegian connection? Hjaltland have been norway for 1000 years and you didnt even know? What scoll have you gone on?
Love your content sir, as a 22 year old having lived here my whole life it was refreshing seeing your take on my home reminding me of how lucky I am! I've been conflicted on whether to stay here or move away for job opportunities like many folk my age across the islands, but hopefully with proposed £50,000 government grant I might be swayed to stay! Keep up the good work!
I’m from Washington DC and this is on my bucket list ! ❤️ I hope you get the grant ! 🍀
I loved your video. I was born in Shetland, lived in Scalloway, Gulberwick Bay, went to school at Andersson High. We moved to New Orleans when I was young but we did went back on holiday every summer and moved back there for a bit when I was in high school. We are now back in New Orleans but I miss Shetland every day. PS…you forgot to mention how lovely it smells. I mean, it smells GREAT! I can still remember the smell of burning peat and sea salt and fields and harbour smells…
Spent 4 1/2 years on the Shetlands with the RAF ( Unst ) Loved every moment of it . Great people.
I’m originally from Coventry England, but I was brought up in those beautiful islands and went back after 15 years and was welcomed back as though I’d never left. I may have been born and live in in Coventry but my heart and home is the Shetland Islands
I lived in Brae for a year 4 years ago, I feel like I've never been the same since leaving and I am looking to move back. Originally I missed the city and thought the isolation killed me, it turns out that cities are not my thing anymore and I love the fresh air and the warmth of the shetlanders. Honestly, it's my favourite place and I'm excited to return there. Great video but UHA isn't just the one, the last one is in march in the village of Brae ❤
Watched your videos for years. Can’t believe you’ve been to our “home town”! Next time let us know and we’ll take you out for coffee.
We’ve been trying to get there for a few years now as my grandmother was from Lerwick and I have always wanted to go.
I love your video! I'm learning so much :D It's like im traveling for real! Thank you for sharing a slice of the world.
Oh this is on my bucket 🪣 list ! Thanks for this Man ! ❤️
Love those ponies !
I loved my visit to the Shetland Islands, taking my car I got too see a lot of the islands, the weather was fine and I would say it is a fantastic place too visit
What a super refreshing description of my home.
We used to call it " the land of the force nine fog " !
You could have a gale blowing and you could still barely see four feet in front of you !
Great place !
Aww as a Shetlander, i have to say this is quite a good video.
Great place to go for a holiday Been four times three times by air and one by sea from South West England
Heading there this year (finally!) and can not wait!
I am moving to live in the Shetland islands in a few short years. Can’t wait.
You’ll love it! I’ve been here my whole life and its amazing!
I'm from Ireland but moved to the US 19 years ago. I'm kinda annoyed I didn't see more of the places closer to home. I really want to travel up to Scotland and the islands when I'm over that side again. So gorgeous.
Just got back from a great holiday on these beautiful islands..more surprised than shocked, but it took three attempts to land over three days! Heavy fog...wasn't really expecting that to be such a problem in these computerised days. Hey ho,worth the wait...recommendation: Unst...gorgeous beaches.
I liked this ! The food looks great. It would be nice to have informatin about accommodations. Thanks.
Appreciate your info! If I were younger, I’d be tempted to try to emigrate there. I would miss the trees - but one could adjust. I would love the puffins and ponies! I like it’s isolation and distance from the busy cities. It would be like living a pioneer life. Slainte! 💙🏴💙
This is fascinating. We want to go thanks to Jimmy Perez. I do have questions seeing hoe these folks basically live on a rock surrounded by ocean. 1. Is it expensive since common sense says most things have to be imported by ship or airplane. 2. I see long winding asphalt roads. Where does the tar and gravel and machinery come from? 3. Everything appears electrified…..where does electricity come from for the inhabited islands. 4. You answered my question about beef. I assume in addition to raising sheep and goats there are cattle farmers there supplying beef. 5. Lumber to build things? I assume there is no Lowes or Home Depot so building materials are shipped in to small retailers? 6. Water? Where can you drill a well to find an aquifer in solid rock? I know my questions have nothing to do with touring the islands but more about how these hardy people have thrived. Thanks.
They produce their own power with wind and tide the machinery comes on a ferry from the mainland
Scotland is hands down my favorite place to visit.
Also, think of Shetland and fiddle/folk ,music comes to mind. This is a massive part of the culture here and may, to American ears sound a little like Appalachian music
love and miss Shetland. hoping to go up for Up Helly Aa next year! i know what you mean about the lamb/sheep! the best lamb stew 🤤 and Haddock and chips from that chip shop in Lerwick. Loving all of your videos, can't believe how many places you've been too. fantastic guide and travel tips always
I'm on the street very often at nights with one of my friends on bikes, most things at least from what I've seen are open past 5, plus main supermarkets and stuff only close at like 10:30
thanks mark x
love you wolt big fan
food looks good and island
It's beautiful
Lerwick on our list for next year. Interesting place. Thanks for the info, Mark 😊
Very interesting But not shocking!
It is just SO beautiful there!!
This is my dream destination. Just as soon as this Covid insanity is over! Excellent information--thank you so much.
Gibralter used to be like that (maybe still is) with regard to crossing a runway. I recall waiting ages at a red light and then suddenly a jet fighter shot past as it landed.
I wanna go see it for reals next January
I’m from Scotland and never even been here I’d love to
Love all of your Scotland videos
Yes that is troo
Great video! It particularly inspired me because I also want to edit a video.
Years ago every time Mark was in a small city he would warn that “they literally roll up the sidewalks at 6” meaning shops are closed and it’s dead at night. Well. It was always a bit of an exaggeration but I’m thinking in this case (Lerwick) it may be true. 😆
Going to Scotland in May 🤞 can’t make it to the Shetland Islands this time, guess we’ll have to plan another trip 🤷♀️
This is Viking territory. People in Britain and Europe don’t live in wooden homes but stone and brick houses
Exactly right. It's strange for us to see homes that aren't built out of bricks or stone.
The islands were actually named the old norse word for "hilt land" because the vikings thought the islands looked like a big sword hilt.
Just so you know, there’s not just one Up Helly Aa, there’s actually about 11. They happen all over Shetland and happen Jan- March. Ps the Lerwick one is Men only...
Du just couldn’t help but put men only 😂
Awesome video
Thank you
Getting a little tired of people empathizing on the no trees here. There’s plenty of trees, just to need to know where to go.
Was there just last week as a part of a cruise, so unfortunatly could only do excursions from the ship so only saw a small part, fantastic scenery and weather wasn't too bad just a bit windy, we wasn't there for the evening but the temp was around 17c, highly recommend if you love bird watching and wild life in general
glad you had a nice visit
I hate that I have an Indian passport. All this looks so beautiful. Its probably just an hour away by flight as well!
The haggis comment made me chuckle. It'd be like going to the USA and saying that they don't just eat cheese burgers. Who knew?!
Since they have no trees, I know imagine them building a floating and burning boat from stone. Those people are hardcore.
what date did you visit shetland and do you have other ancestors elsewhere in scotland
The Broch of Mora? Never heard of it and I’m from Shetland.
Maybe he meant Mousa
Lerwick certainly looks like a stunning picturesque town to explore and those noodles with mussels look amazing; definitely somewhere to go for me cos I wanna explore different kinds of seafood! Are there ferries to Kirkwall on the Orkneys so I could spend half a day in each place? Would be a nice daytrip from Aberdeen, with the overnight ferries doubling as hotels!
Yeah Aberdeen overnight to Lerwick direct one night and via Kirkwall on alternate nights. Arrives Kirkwall about midnight though so you can't do what you want. 1/2 a day each is not enough anyway. Could do a day in each with a hotel in Kirkwall but you really need longer to make it worthwhile for the cost
@@DBolt2008 might be better to fly to Kirkwall, explore that for the day then overnight ferry to Lerwick to explore for the day before overnight ferry back to Aberdeen
So what does Tosh do all day?
Trying to reintroduce norn a Scandinavian language group that was spoken there until the 19th century
What a cutie!!
How beautiful. Omggggg!!! When is Covid gonna end. 😭
It would never have come in the first place, if we'd only voted for Republicans!
@@vincentperratore4395 don’t bring politics into this.
Definitely want to see a PUFFIN (POOOOFIN)Well there goes another Island on my list I'm going to go check out I got Scotland Ireland Shetland Norway Denmark Sweden Finland England Italy Croatia God damn it every time you go to another place I wanna go
How cool are those ponies. Your vlogs are always so beautifully done and so informative. Thank you for what you do. It's on my bucket list.
Gibraltar has something like this that you can walk across the runway
I would love to visit the shetland islands in the near future when the pandemic is over
it is worth visiting
Soo Beautiful Places 👍🏻🇨🇳
It was gorgeous
Hi Mr. "Wolters World" (sorry, I've forgotten your name - senior moment). I thoroughly enjoy your videos. I learn so much, and really enjoy your comments, and funny and light-hearted demeanor. I have one observation, and a coupe questions for you. My observation is: If, while one is driving and looking out one window to see the sites, then when driving back and looking out the opposite window, one will see the same sites. Think about it. Now a few questions: Are there any pubs on the islands, and if there are, do they also close at 5? Also, if everything, including restaurants and pubs close at 5, what does one do about dinner? Thank you again for making these videos. I enjoy them immensely! The only thing I don't like about them is that they make me jealous, and I envy you for being able to travel to all these lovely and wonderful parts of the world!
the pubs and restaurants are open later, it is the stores and shops that close at 5
Haha, the ponies aren't all that anti social. If they want to come up and say hello, they will.
another thing about Shetland that might shock you is the massive drug problem
Lighten up foretrex we're not all on booze and drugs.........
Orkney is better! Just kidding I love Shetland too but was raised just doon the north see a peedie bit.
The film Suicide mission(1954) aka Shetlandsgjengen is based on the Shetland bus and some of the people involved in the war have parts.
I knew Shetland students when studying in Edinburgh in the 80s. When they talked amongst themselves I didn't have a clue what they were saying.
It’s called dialect
@@hazelpearson7807 You are the mistress of the obvious.
I missed the Shetlands when my cruise had to bypass bad weather. I am going back if it kills me!
Well, if you're worried about being killed if in the event you do go back, by all means then, don't go!
Shetland.....not Shetlands, get it right it would be like saying The Englands , The Scotland’s, The Ireland’s
@@hazelpearson7807 The Scotland's what? The Ireland's what? The apostrophe indicates possession. A plural does not require an apostrophe. See? You did "The Englands" correctly. Thanks loads for the grammar lesson. smh
@@kays749 take it up with auto correct but it's still not the Shetlands grammer mistakes or not

I don't know why, but the line about the sheep being "cute but really tasty" made me giggle.
they were on both counts :)
Drive accross the runway in Gibralter.
Going here in my Honeymoon!
awesome!
I’m
Are you going to be in the central belt at all?
Yes donte say enything because I’m from ther
Best to pronounce unusual or foreign words very clearly, maybe show the spelling....... Thanks for this tour!
#11: They are up to their elbows in ponies
Yes they are :)
No trees?did they all get burned or used for homes?
It’s a windy place plus loads of sheep that contribute to soil erosion. They love eating grass. I’m sure there is also other factors such as early human inhabitants using up whatever woods existed at that time.
🏴❤️Shetland
The treelessness isn't natural, it's been cleared of trees for farming, centuries ago.
Yes...that's very true.
Off course it had trees that's how peat is made, from old decomposed trees.
They were always just stunted birch etc
Don't have a tv so don't know what crazy stuff you're talking about 😂
5 Orcadians dislike this video... 😉😘
Where. Are. The. Ponies. For. Sale.
It’s known as Shetland , NOT the Shetland islands ☹️
Alba gu bragh!
You had me at ponies 🤗 then lost me with motion sickness 🤮 nothing helps I've tried everything 😒
Scandinavian meatballs mmmmmm
You drive over the airport runway when entering and leaving Gibraltar to Spain.
Hmm! 1472 is not a few hundred years, which is when they became Scottish! Previously been sold as a part of a dowry in 1468 from the Norwegian King because he had no money for his daughters dowry.
