  • Here's the update on the Beer Garden! Mother Nature has not been kind, but there are a few bright spots to look forward to. We'll definitely have some red and blue corn to work with, as well as some home grown Crystal Hops:-)

    I'm in Texas. I grew hops for the first time this year. It started off great. I got a bunch of cones by early July. It grew to probably 20 feet in length. Then the dog days hit it and it just stopped. Now I got a bunch of cones that are probably past due and the plants themselves are starting to turn yellow. I think starting them in March rather than May would have helped dramatically.

    • @BeardedBored
      @BeardedBored  Před 3 lety

      Same exact thing is happening to mine. Not sure what to do, but I know it's not time to harvest until late fall. My plan is to just keep watering as needed, then harvest the few dozen cones I've got. Everybody says the first year sucks, but I've been thinking this thing was going to die on me 2 or 3 times this year. Our spring is like February, so it'll re-sprout on its own as soon as the weather is right.

    You need to add some wind breaks in the back yard around the planting areas. Fields with hundreds of acres the outer plants protect the inner ones, when you only have a few rows you need something to buffer them. Learned that the hard way, but hey a few grape vines in the right spot break the wind and provides muscadines for wine and jam now. Which I bet this year's crop you'll have in top shape.

    • @BeardedBored

      Yeah, definitely going to make some changes and set it up to handle the weather. Also have to move the beds entirely to get more sun. Can't wait to get started and try again:-)

    Such a good first crack at it Bearded, well done. I don’t know anyone who has grown everything they wanted, how they wanted it on their first try. My Mum successfully pollinates her glass house plants (it’s cold in the south of NZ) with a fine bristled artist paint brush. Awesome you’re getting flowers on your hops 1st season, I had to let all my variety’s “veg” the first year without trimming to get reasonable rhizome growth. We are sand based where I live, mulch and compost is a must but it makes a massive difference. LOVING the Videos again!

      Thanks so much Jared! Gonna keep at it. Hoping to get enough hops for a 4 liter batch of beer, but even if I only have enough to make a little baby 500ml batch I'm still gonna do it, LoL!
      Sand and clay over here so I know feel your struggle. I had to bust up the first 30-40cm of soil and amend it a lot before I planted. Seems to be happy so far. We have so few pollinators in this area that I did the paint brush technique in my veggie garden:-)

    Cory Maag is absolutely correct you are not getting enough sunlight to grow corn or cool season grains. As Cory said that is why you are lodging the plants are tall and thin because they are reaching for more sun. The lack of light will cause lodging, fungus, and a lack of blooms which is absolutely essential for farm crops to produce. I know some said to save the seed, but if your seed isn't heirloom seeds they are hybrid and the next crop could be worst than this crop. I do keep my seeds and they do get better every year, but they were heirloom to start with. Also some wheat and barley varieties are more prone to lodging than others and some will thresh real easy and others are impossible without mechanical help. Another thing that helps corn pollinate in really small plantings is not to plant in long rows, but more of a square pattern. Also to help prevent lodging you can plant more densely, but then you have to have full sun. Sorry to deliver bad news, but bottom line is you really need a new spot for your grains to grow. Thanks for the videos we really enjoy them.

    I hope by now you have learned a few things. Growing up on my grampas in I have learned many things about livestock and grain farming. Nitrogen is extremely important and should be done when your grain spears about one to two inches from the ground. Your soil was very hollow, with that type of soil you should try placing a tarp underneath with holes every foot to control the rate of water flow. You can also use a staper or roller and compact the soft soil, that will provide your root system greater stability and prevent your crop from toppling over. I have littler grown wheat under the shade of palm trees for temperature control in very hot climates with average yields. Just tricks you learn heres and theres. Just keep at it, you'll be alright. Oh and a paper hole puncher works great if you're going to use a tarp moisture retention base.

    • @BeardedBored
      @BeardedBored  Před 4 lety +1

      Some of the methanol will come off that way, but even in traditional distillation methanol can come off during the entire run, so you'll always have some in there. Plus, the fusel oils which are denser than methanol and ethanol are still in the apple jack, and they can wreck your day too. My advice is always to just drink it as a sipper, or skip the freezing process and run the apple wine through a still to get brandy:-)

    I think one of your big problems is sunlight - corn needs a certain number of FULL days of sunlight, depending on the brand. Your corn looks pretty skinny and leggy, which is typical of not getting enough sunlight. Your property is pretty shady with all the trees, so the corn wouldn’t get a full day’s light. I would estimate you will always have difficulty growing corn where your garden is, unfortunately ☹️. Also, the wheat/barley - could be immature, also could be a sunlight problem- BUT it also could be a severe DON problem. If you aren’t familiar with DON in wheat/barley google it. It’s a common fungus that ruins barley and wheat if not caught early. Also grain harvested with higher levels of DON in it will make it unsuitable for brewing. I own a small malt house, and DON can be a real bear if it gets in your field! Expensive to get it cleaned post-harvest! Just a couple thoughts! Great videos, keep up the good work!

      @@BeardedBored lol for sure. I planted a garden once when I lived on a cattle ranch years ago. Never got around to weeding it so it was 3' tall with pig weed. My bosses wife razed the hell out of me about it. Hers was all manicured and Purdy like. A freak hail storm went threw our valley and wiped out hers and everyone else's garden. Total desimation. Mine was the only one that survived because of the pig weed. It was hilarious.

      Soap. While you can purchase insecticidal soaps to kill ants in your garden, make your own instead, using simple dish soap. Add 1 teaspoon of dish soap to 1 pint of warm water and stir. Spray the soapy water directly on plants and around your garden to eliminate ants
