Just bought a flute and started playing my first notes while reading flute tabs and heard this right away. Came to your video and fulfilled a childhood dream. Thank you so much for creating this. Im literally in tears.
Travis, you are most welcome. Thank you for sharing that. You made my day. Keep fluting, my friend!
Been a fan of Jeffro Tull for years got to see them in 2005 here in the UK. During the lock down decided I'd try and learn to play the flute. I've only just stumbled on this and think you teach this in a very understandable way. Your amazing thanks 🎶
this was also a childhood dream of mine. this was the first jethro tull song i ever heard and i was an instant fan. If i had a son i'd name him Ian.
Do you play Chicago's 'color my world'
@@dakine988 I saw it live last Saturday in Noblesville, In. Those guys really know how to work in horns and flutes with their music. It works really well.
I received a flute as a birthday gift two weeks ago and I was worried I wouldn't be able to learn anything without a teacher. Also I wasn't sure if there were any Jethro tull flute tutorials online at all. Trying to figure out note by note a song without even knowing how the keys on the flute worked was so difficult I felt guilty I wished for a flute when I wasn't good enough. After a some days I found this video I realized that I almost learnt to play my first Jethro Tull song and that barely half a month has passed since I started. I also checked out lessons by other people but your channel and lessons really encouraged me, please keep doing these tutorials, they are great! (Sorry for my bad english I'm not a native speaker)
That is fantastic! I'm so glad these videos helped. Keep practicing! With each note and phrase and technique you learn, your confidence (and your joy) will increase. Next lesson will be posted very soon!
This is the best video on CZcams. I just picked up a flute because I want to learn some Tull and don't feel like reading music. Thanks for being real and helping us all out!!!
No problem, Michael! Glad you've joined the flute cult! Any questions or requests, please let me know.
Thank you! I have only had my flute for a few days and this is keeping me motivated!! Someday I will be able to play this song!
Did you learn?
You Great ! I bought my flute just 2 months ago, never had any instrument before, the first song I learnt is this one following your video time by time. Now i can play it (first part), certainly not like Ian Anderson does but I am pretty satisfied. Thank you !
Awesome!!! Glad it was helpful!
G F A# A G....
I was able to follow all the given notes and was able to play them on the guitar. A million thanks. I am now able to play my own version of "Living in the pass" as now I'm trying to live in the present :D
Thank you for posting this clip. I bought myself a used flute this christmas so i am an absolute beginner. 😅 I am not new to music in general... I play guitar since 20 years and bass since 6 years. I also do a little bit drums and learn a bit piano and organ at the moment. Everything selftought...never had lessons. But the flute is total different. I listen to Jethro Tull my whole life because my mother loved them, too. So yeah Mr. Anderson is the main reason i wanted to try out the flute. I can already play some notes so this clip realy helps my progress. Thank you. ✌️🙂
Greetings from Germany
I'm happy the video has helped you! I hope you keep practicing and most of all enjoying it!
I play piano music.... But love this 🎷 sax 👌The guy is a great teacher 👍🏻
Well, I can see I'm going be living on this video for a while.... the only major band I saw 3 times in concert while in college in the 70's was Tull. I bought a used flute back then, and after a while played with other people without them noticing how bad I was.
I put it down after college, and finally bought another this month, from a music store in Miami via the Reverb site. I'm really impressed what great condition it's in... and maybe the gold lip plate will help, lol.
Thanks for the lesson. As I recall, I used to be able to play (or fake playing) this anthem song. Glad Ian is still around, too.
Cool! Glad you've picked it back up. I'm jealous that you got to see them in the 70s at their pinnacle (three times, no less). Thanks for sharing your Tull tale. Keep on flutin'. Let me know if you have any requests for future videos.
@@ShroudedDay Thanks! I intend to learn this song, and then maybe at least the first part of Scarborough Fair, which looks more difficult to me. Of course, I only played by ear back in the day, so I want to learn some music now.... I finally was able to hit some low notes after a week or so, lol.
Seeing Tull was amazing, still my favorite concerts after all this time.
Thanks for your excellent lesson. I'm practising and learning day by day from your video.
Great to hear! Keep it up!
Thanks :) easy to follow as u show which pads and also help me remeber and learn which note its which pads ! Fantastic :)
Most welcome! Glad it was helpful!
What can I say… thank you! You made my dream of learning the flute come true🤣
You're most welcome. Glad to hear it! Keep fluting!
Thank You!!! Great Lesson
Very welcome!
This is really great. Your camera angle is perfect. I'm only 3 weeks into learning the flute. I've been loving this tune for forty something years now.
Good deal! Glad it was helpful. Keep tooting that flute!
thank you very much, I enjoy it very much . hope you are having any good time. Im hearing you from Tulum in Mexico .. thanks alot
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks! Greetings from the midwest of the United States.
Nice cosplay. I saw him live back in 2010. Great gig, even if he's gotta lift his toes to hit above a one octave range nowadays he still snorted and spat his way through the flute parts which was fun.
LOL, thanks. For my next trick I will stand on one leg. Yeah, Ian's voice isn't what it used to be for sure but his flute skills are still bomb. Long live Tull!
You make the FLUTE ...COOL!!
Awesome! Thanks!
Very informative....much thanx
Awesome mate!!! Grt job. Keep rocking n thank you
Most welcome. Thanks!
Muito bom , maravilhoso.
Obrigato!
Very nice lesson!
Thank you for watching!
Excellent ! Thanks !
i been playing Drums all my life but i really wanna learn to play lute like Ian Anderson. I am considering buying a budget flute. Your very good btw
Thanks! Yes, get that flute and start practicing! I recommend Yamaha.
awesome! Im trying to get the Anderson tone and technique. Im use to having my pinky down all most notes ...also the flutter breathing is new to me. Thanks this gives me something to work on during lock up. Saw your office cubical performance of this ...I call you the beast flute player/performer it was very entertaining. Rock on!
Ian also said that its only one of two songs in 5/4 that has ever made it to the billboard charts top 10. "Take Five" being the other one?
LOL! Thanks!! Glad it was helpful. I'll be uploading part 2 soon! I'm also going to do a separate video focusing on the general Tull flute sound.
@@ScottGoriup That is something I did not know! Thanks!
Love it!
Thank you!
Brilliant! Your playing and your timing. I have been working on that score for quite a while now during COVID as well as "Locomotive Breath" to perform live with my all chick band, "Bitchin' Boss Babes when that is possible. I was gobsmacked coming across your video yesterday. I practice this score every day working on the singing while playing the flute technique as well. I do need to learn the dirty flute sounds that Ian produced and am looking forward to your next videos continuing this knowledge for "Living in the Past." Please let me know when you post your latest video showing the techniques more complicated parts than Ian played and analyze and play the rest of the score for "Living in the Past."
Thanks for watching! Glad it was helpful! I'll be uploading part 2 very soon, hopefully this week.
@@ShroudedDay I am stoked and can't wait. I have been working too hard on this score not to have the glottal stops, double tonguing, as well as singing, while and playing the flute, as you say, which gives it that flavor. I will be paying attention to your shout-out regarding continuing this brilliant education on the best approach to playing "Living in the Past." I am inspired by your performance of this score and again cannot thank you. enough for sharing your brilliance.
@@candacebehuniak6449 Much appreciation for your kind words. Here is Part 2: czcams.com/video/VwYajFfrV7U/video.html
Keep up the good work and keep us posted on your progress!
Wish u could show use how to play cross eyed mary
I'll put that one on the list!
Grazie, ottimo video :-)
Most kind! Thank you!
Life is a long song solo please
You coyldn't look anymore like Ian Anderson than this fella.
wow...please let me know what kind of flute is this what is it called beacuse in india we have bamboo flutes
This is a basic Boehm transverse flute. The brand is Yamaha. This is technically a student model flute but I use a concert flute foot joint so I can have that extra low note.
Not A#, but Bb. Also, it’s 5/4, which is a tricky time signature.
What kind of Yamaha flute is best for this (sort of bright) flute tone?
I recommend a solid silver head joint, or at least plated silver. Really helps with brightness. Mine is a student model with a concert B foot. Happy fluting!
I have the first 32 notes down pat and now I've only but experimented with those last notes more fancily played and I keep rewinding rewinding rewinding until just now I finally realized you said there's a second video for those
Haha, hope the second video helped as well. Thanks for watching!
Nice post, haven’t you written the music ??
How did you learn the vibratto
Great question! It took many years of practice to make it sound decent. It sounded way too fast at first, like I was being electrocuted or something, lol. I can't point to one single technique I used to learn it; just lots of practice. Singing helps as well!
Because of the over all key it is not an a sharp it is a b flat. The song is basically in g Minor d minor. F major.
Thanks for the insight!
Is your a C flute? Your notes seem a little darker than mine.
It is technically a c flute but I have a b foot for that extra low note.
@@ShroudedDay Mine does too...still trying to master it....as well as open hole
Error en el dedo meñique mano izquierda va siempre arriba nunca en esa posición. Desde rosario argentina te saludo
I am waiting for tutorial of "my God"!
Ooh, that'd be a good one to do. One of my favorite Tull flute riffs of all time. I'll put that on the list!
Awesome, great to find another Tull loving flute player! I've got a couple of Tull covers on my channel if you'd like to check them out. And keep up the great work!
Thank you, Claire! Love your work on YT and definitely nice to see someone else keepin' the Tull faith.
