- Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show (shortened to Dr. Hook in 1975) was an American rock band, formed in Union City, New Jersey. They enjoyed considerable commercial success in the 1970s with hit singles including "Sylvia's Mother", "The Cover of 'Rolling Stone'" (both 1972), "Only Sixteen" (1975), "A Little Bit More" (1976), "Sharing the Night Together" (1978), "When You're in Love with a Beautiful Woman" (1979), "Better Love Next Time" (1979), and "Sexy Eyes" (1980). In addition to their own material, Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show performed songs written by the poet Shel Silverstein.
The founding core of the band consisted of George Cummings, Ray Sawyer (from Alabama), and Billy Francis (born William Allen Francis, Jr. in Sacramento, California; January 16, 1942 - May 23, 2010), who had worked together in a band called the Chocolate Papers. They played the southern, eastern, and mid-western United States before breaking up. Cummings, who moved to New Jersey with the plan of forming a new band, brought Sawyer to rejoin him. They then took on future primary vocalist, New Jersey native Dennis Locorriere, initially as a bass player. Francis returned to be the new band's keyboardist.
Cummings named the new band "Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show: Tonic for the Soul." The "Hook" name was inspired by Sawyer's eyepatch and a reference to Captain Hook of the Peter Pan fairy tale, although, humorously, Captain Hook was neither a doctor nor wore an eyepatch. Ray Sawyer had lost his right eye in a near-fatal car crash in Oregon in 1967, and thereafter always wore an eyepatch. The eyepatch led some to believe that Sawyer was 'Dr. Hook'. When anyone asked the band which one of them was 'Dr Hook' they always directed everyone to the bus driver.
RIP Ray Sawyer
Ray Sawyer (Chickasaw, 1 februari 1937 - Daytona Beach, 31 december 2018) was singer of Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show.
He died on New Year’s Eve, 2018 in Daytona Beach, Florida, USA.
RIP Ray.

I'm leaving this comment here so maybe after a week or a month or a year when someone likes it, I get reminded of this awesome song.

I will be 70 soon...still get butterflies in my tummy when I hear this song...One of the great bands of our Generations
❤❤Sweden loves you!!!
Me too.
Wasn't my era but it still fills me with a sunnier disposition. My 12 year daughter loves it too. We can't turn back time but we carry it in our souls and into the generations to come.
So thankful I grew up in the 70' and 80's‼️💓🎶🪇🎶
Here here!! 👏👏👏
Why isn’t this band in the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame? I’ll never know.
Because the rock and roll hall of fame is a GD joke. Meaningless
Probably the eye patch. RRHOF is EXTREMELY snobby; if they see one little thing they don't like, they are like, 'nope.'
Disco.
Some people still look down on disco music
The band that first recorded a song about being on the cover of the Rolling Stone NEEDS to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Even my barely 20 son thinks the 70's were the best. He's right!
I know right!! my son 21 and loves all 70's

Very true and it had that kind of fluid musicality and it was romantic.
@@nadjakorol I agree!
I just discovered him this year. I listen to spend the night together almost every night. They quickly became my favorite band
I would give almost anything to return to the mid to late 70's. Such a peaceful happy time 😊
That's a fact! Great times
Well what are waiting for then let's go back right now right this minute
@deanrideout1275 well, I'm waiting on a time machine, I think 🤔

I agree I miss the 80s soooo much 🙏

Ich liebe dieses Lied 🥀 da fühlt man sich noch einmal Jünger
Back to the 1970s and early 1980s... When there was so much good music, I was actually ignoring quite a bit of it 🙉 just so I could concentrate on the music that I really did like 😍
I keep finding myself going back to the 1970s - 1980s to "re-discover" tracks that I remember hearing on the radio, but had never really paid much attention to back in the day 🤷♂️
A lot of those tracks that I had previously disregarded as "radio music" are really great songs! 😍 And I only wish that I was still living in an era where there was so much good music I could afford to be picky.
Yes! There is still great music being released in this day and age, but it's getting harder to find. The vast majority of "new music" fills me with a mixture of disgust and rage 🤬 And after about 5 seconds of listening to the heavily Autotuned vocals, I've got to make it stop! 🖐🚫
I really miss the days where singers actually sang 😢 Autotune has stripped out all the feeling and emotion from vocals. And it's been replaced by a synthetic, soulless, perfectionism 😫
I am pushing 78 but these songs put me right back to one of the best music that still knocks out anything since then and is CLASSIC AND FINE
Ah....yes still Enjoying ! FABULOUS Wonderful music and yes dancing! Thanks for sharing your gift! Ps I'm 74!
Who wishes they still made music like this 🙋🏻♀️ I do
Me too. Fond memories of the past and beyond...
They do! Dance Pop.

Great song 🎵
🙋🏻♂️
This is what I call music ! Real talent, Real musicians.
Right in my times. Good memories. 👀💯🎤🎵
Fax. These are actually singing unlike today's music
So funny you say that because they were a joke in their day. Now they're "real musicians" because a guy with an eyepatch was shaking maracas. What a fucking idiot.

And shaking his booty making sexy eyes!
They were loved for years. Ray has passed but in 2021 Dennis is still singing. I have loved them from the beginning and now as an old lady I still love their music and humor.
Me too Sandra. 👍👩🦳

This is how I discovered Dr. Hook a couple years ago. Now I just cannot get enough of them. One of my favourites of their songs.

What a fabulous band. I was born in 1972, but I grew up listening to them as my parents were fans. Great memories. Saw Dennis live a few years ago and he still sounds amazing ❤️

Still love this song, remembering the 70's.🙂😢
I think this was recorded in 79 but came out January of 1980. Definite late 70’s vibe though.
Yes Robin the 70's were a wonderful time to be alive

One of the best bands in the 70s ,still love them to this day ,always forever Dr. HOOK !
I’m 27 and I wonder what ever happened to music after the 70’s ?? It was so much more real ! The best decade in my books for music the decade may have past but let the music live on and be carried down !
80s were amazing as well imo

Mid 00's was when things went skew whiff imo.

I love this music, it tells stories, they weren't just one word over and over and over.
No matter what style or tune they are playing, they always seem to have so much fun ! 😊
Love their music. Still relevant and enjoyable
I used to play in bands and many years ago I was the band who'd played the weekend in a club before Dr. Hook was booked to play.. Dennis was playing there the night after us and was checking out the acoustics, stage etc.. in the club... We ended up having lunch together and a few beers and got quite pleasantly anibrehated... One of the most enjoyable times... and a great person...
@Debbie Scott I've seen him over here on TV.. He's been a guest a few times on a music themed quiz show.. I had a feeling he lived over here..
Thanks for your reply Debbie.
Seems like a good guy and handsome fella too haha
that is such a cool story

Love this song! Timeless and great memories!! 🙌🏻👍🏻🥰
I grew up in the 70's, I put this on here to be played.
Dr. Hook sure was a different musical beast in the late 70s/early 80s compared to their early 70s Gritty country Rock, turning to a more smooth Soft Rock style which brought them great commercial success. I love every era of this fabulous band!
Agree love there country ish stuff too tho
That's true. I have a feeling they probably changed Producers and/or Record Labels, the change was that profound.
@@Jgeneraledger23 They stuck with their producer but felt they had to make more radio ready music in order to please the DJs. Their old fans probably felt a little perplexed but they gained a whole new and broader fanbase. Their 1978 album Pleasure and Pain is probably their finest album. They really became a highly successful middle of the road(MOR) act for several years and the hits just kept on coming!

Dr. Hook had at least five hit songs that I can think of.
Non stop partying was their downfall. They burned up every cent they made,

Corensa Perry Dr Hook isn’t a person, dumbass.
Love their music!!
It's an entire band, not one person...
It's crazy how i was born in this era 1979 and never ever heard this until today in the casino bus lobby
@@thefonzkiss You can't really be The Fonz, 'cause he was cool, and you're obviously an asshole. It's common for people to mistake a band with a name like "Dr Hook," or "Jethro Tull," or even "Lynyrd Skynyrd" (when pronounced phonetically, especially), for an individual. Someone like Corensa can be (should be) forgiven for such a mistake. Sure, a person may have heard several songs by the band on the radio through the years, but unless they closely followed the band, it's understandable that having a band name that sound like an individual's name can confuse most people. But, "Fonz," you need that l'il taste of superiority you derive from chastising others, don't you? Sad, that you couldn't respond civilly and simply and helpfully explain that Dr Hook was a band name. You need to chill out, "Fonzie." Ayyy!
