I could watch Tom Silva draw freehand straight lines for hours
Hahahahaha
agreed. Tom's videos are always very satisfying and very informative.
Every home should come with a Tom Silva!
Tom is a Master Carpenter and a contractor's contractor. I sure would love to work with the guy like Kevin does, but I sure would not like to work for the guy.......he can be a ball buster.
I absolutely have the highest adoration for tommy not only for his superb woodworking skills, which are of course immense, but for his ability to teach someone the basics on proper chisel technique and *not* come off as condescending or ‘man-splain’ as I believe the youth call it lol. He’s such a rare talent.
Tom is the bravest chiseler Ive ever seen. Reminds me of holding firewood for my half-blind Dad back in the day.
This guys saved my life with some videos and projects around my house
I love the way he removed it. All the other examples I've watched so far use power tools that I don't own and don't want to buy/rent. Thanks for the simplification :)
Hi Laura 👋 I hope my comment didn't sound as a form of privacy invasion your comment tells of a wonderful woman with a beautiful heart which led me to comment I don't normally write in the comment section but I think you deserve this complement. If you don’t mind can we be friends? God bless you….🌹
Tom is so brave to hold that chisel while she hits it with a hammer. Ive hit my own hand before 😂
“I have everything I need and then some” - a hammer and chisel - because you are the man
Everyone's worst nightmare, repair hardwood floors. And Tommy does it the right Although she did go a little deep with the spade bit.
I noticed that as well. Lol.
yeah options are there, this shows only 1 of them
@diver dave - $15
Good explanation of process Tom! However after 40 plus years of being in the flooring trade/construction I think you would agree that it is never a good idea to hold a nail, chisel, ect for someone else to hammer! LOL
That part made me so anxious

I giggled a little and said ouch as she placed the orbital sander paper side down on the floor behind her 😓
yea for real, lets just stain the whole floor now lol
While it was still spinning!!!
Wow! I loved the simple tools he used!
this guy is the best
Thanks for the instruction. I think I can do it!
love watching this guy learning a lot from him just hope he does a video where he replaces a bigger patch..
czcams.com/video/QcwYDz8BYmU/video.html
They're out here on youtube,.
thank you...
this old house really needs to show finished projects
I appreciate that it's good to get the homeowner involved with these projects...but, Tommy was pretty brave to hold the chisel, while the homeowner whacked away with the hammer. It turned out nicely, though. Nice patch.
Quality fix.
Wow I love this.. Bought a house and in every room were connections for cable/satellite through the floor so it shouldn't be too hard to do this since holes are there already. On my list of things to do. Wish me luck. Love This Old House.
Did you do it?
By the way I suggest watch a 13 part series called _What on earth happened_ by Ewaranon to learn that the earth is not a globe. Link in my about tab.
I learnt something useful.
I like how long he kept the mask on.
Yeah and for vapors you need a respirator with organic vapor filter, I think that mask he used protects only from particulates.
😍 superb.
should have sanded it and the surrounding pieces fully with a triangle corner type sander, then stained. it stands out with noly poly and can be easily seen. poly isnt enough.
I made use of his chiseling method and it worked great. The only concern i have with his video is that he does not add enough length to his measurement to penetrate the wall 1/4" which is what the other boards do
He could've cut the tongue off and got it under the trim. Or leave the tongue on and flush with trim. Only 2 options without removing the base board
Remember seen one episode with Norm Abram doing the same things but with something like 10 boards, and I believe it was a kitchen
I can't see how using a saw would be any better advantage ." Old school " would be the best & only way . That spade bit and chisel is correct in my opinion.
Give the new board some color first before coating. If you will use a double layer of blue tape around the edges of the board you can sand down the board individually without affecting the surrounding boards. Takes some skill and time.
DONT DRILL THE SUB FLOOR lol
That's the problem with spade bits
Homedepot doesnt sell those strip floor wood. Where do you get those woods?
Where can I buy just a few pieces of this wood to fix a small area. I can't seem to find anything but bundles which are way more than I need.
What kind of wood flooring is this. I need to pick some up for a repair?
Is that patch piece going to remain lighter in tone in comparison to the rest of the floor? Iow, are subsequent coats of the clear coat going to change its appearance to any degree? Thanks
It'll take a few years to turn the same color. They could have experimented with the other scraps and stain to get it closer ?
Tom, Oscillating OS 400 EQ-Plus VECTURO is your BEST FRIEND when patching.
Does anybody know the type of spray he used?
Rocking that stiletto hammer and fess tools. We have that rotex sander at the shop it's 5000$ tool. Not practical to haul to jobsite
Awesome. Wait what is the spray did he used?
polyurethane
What happened to stain before you install??! ALWAYS! sooo I thought..
I can’t find 1.5 inch strip red oak anywhere that doesn’t require a minimum order of 1500 sq ft. I need 10-20 sq ft. Any suggestions
Is that polyurethane water or oil based?
Just drill through the hardwood not to subfloor. Old board comes out…..BOOM Swiss cheese lol
She fucked up the subfloor
I never thought to only cut the bottom part of the female joint to make it fit, I would have just cut off the tongue on both which would be inferior. I'll remember this.
What kind of strong glue to use? Can i usa 1406 tongue and groove to do this but with laminate flooring?
1406 superior tongue and groove glue?
I've seen Tom hit his chisel with the side of the hammer before. Why the heck does he do that? Also, it looks like they should have stained that patch board before applying the poly to match the rest of the floor.
D Raphael to protect his fingers from the unskilled home owner
I do the same very often to protect my fingers from myself.
It's much easier to hit your target with a bigger object.
Tom Silva has talked about using the side of his hammer before on a number of occasions. He said that's the way he was taught. Also, that red oak will darken over time on its own. If you stain it to match now, it will darken and become obvious in about 6 months.
Much harder to miss the chisel head.
A chisel really circular saws multi tool I could have putty Staind that hole and you wouldn't have had to replace it
That’s the straightest freehand drawn line I’ve ever seen
He was holding his thumb against the edge of the board as a guide. He does that a lot.
A dutchman!
Tommy is alway stripping and scoring.
Would this process work the same to replace small sections of damaged laminate wood flooring as well?
William Todd Repairing laminate is a different material i.e. 8mm to 12mm of photographed wood grain basically, laminate is not wood but the same technic can be used with spade bit and chisel. glue in the new piece similar to regular strip flooring/ after removing bottom part of the groove including the end part of piece. This requires patience and sharp tools .
how to repair a pee stain on hardwood floor
A claw hammer should only be used on unhardened steel. Hammering with the cheek doesn't make this any less careless.
Audio guy out to lunch on this one.
What kind of spray did you use? Is it a clear spray?
Nice job btw
yes, its polyurethane
He needs to put more carpenter glue on the sub floor or else with time it will start squeeking
I’m sure Tom would have used penny spike nails afterwards.
Where can i buy these replacement wood pieces??
Any place that sells wood flooring
@@HaploBartow homedepot doesnt
Over the years Toms hands are as hard as that hammer, if the hammer would’ve hit his hand the hammer would’ve dented!
Why does he use the side of his hammer?
Ouch! It looks like she accidentally drilled in the sub-floor in a number of location.
lol. I know.
Yes that's why I never used drills for my repairs! And besides I was never taught that way.
What is the exact product he used?
polyurethane
1:58: We're just gonna skip a major step right here, don't mind us.
An oscillating multi tool would have been more efficient
A chisel doesn't cost a hundred bucks tho
Gloria Lyons Actually, I’d just shoot the board out with my Smith n Wesson 500 Mag probably need a 700 gr load for that red oak 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
You dont get anywhere near as clean and striaight an edge on the cut baord. That's crittical to this job because you want the sawn board to meet the chiseled board as tightly as possible. Also the multi tool is very hard to control when it gets beside the installed baords that have to remain uncut.
Gonna need a carbide tipped blade (or two) to cut through thick oak flooring. Older stuff was commonly an inch or thicker.
Why couldn't Tom hold the chisel. When I nod my head you hit it.
how t patch large gaps in groove and tongue old oak floors
Hi Marga 👋 I hope my comment didn't sound as a form of privacy invasion your comment tells of a wonderful woman with a beautiful heart which led me to comment I don't normally write in the comment section but I think you deserve this complement. If you don’t mind can we be friends? God bless you….🌹
I would have used a salvaged wood floor board
good work but the color will be wrong.
Wot is or good chob
What?
Table saw rip that Groove right off
If you have a table saw
The name of the show is This Old House not jack-of-all-trades call a professional
Trust me the safety glasses are s you don't smash your fingers.
You could have just sanded off the black on the original piece.
wouldn't it make more sense to sand the new piece before you install it? that way you aren't sanding the other boards
tkx7 no
The idea is to sand it smooth with the surrounding boards. Prior to inlay you couldn't be assured of not sanding the single piece enough, it worse, sanding too much. The only thing that could have been done differently to make the job better, and less noticable, would have been too stain the patch board to match the floor prior to urethaning.
Yes.
Tom Pimpin
Looks like the old floor is white oak and the new board is red oak
Can't use the head of a hammer nobody strikes it from the side
My sisters dog ate a hole in the wood floors of my rental home.. I'm desperate for someone to do this and make it look brand newlol
WHAT a dog ate wood floor that's crazy
BTW I suggest watch a 13 part series called _What on earth happened_ by Ewaranon to learn that the earth is not a globe. Link in my about tab.
@@flat-earther An approximately 8month old labradoodle. Hole has been successfully superglued and covered by a rug.
Also, no thank you lol
and it will stick out like a sore thumb because of the finish
DAE1110 how
When all is dry yuo can see the pach , he have to separate the pieces with blue tape!!!
NOT after 4 coats.
That red oak will darken on its own in about 6 months. If you stain it to match when it's new, it will then get too dark.
why do they always tap the chisel with the hammer facing sideways like that on this channel? I've never seen someone do that in real life but it must be for a reason
Its easier when striking the chisel...
looks like white oak
That’s not the only thing Tom tapped that day
Wonder how many times he made this type repair. Similar vids all the way into the grey hair years. And a woman who actually swings a hammer rather than trying to push it.
He really needed to stain that new board before putting on the urethane, it's going to stand out quite a bit.
Oil based polyurethane darkens significantly over time. The rest of the floors look like unstained red oak with oil polyurethane.
@@lrmorgan07 But the rest of the floor has had a head start in aging that will never go away. If it had been me, I would have worked with some kind of stain to have matched that board to the sanded ones next to it, before applying the urethane. That process wouldn't have fit in a 5-minute segment though.
Shit, finally know how to use a hammer, you use the side, thiugh I was doikd it wrong
Woodglut is nice for that.
If I was red color blind I'm certain it would look great.
Actually I’d just shoot the board out with my Smith n Wesson 500 Mag probably need a 700 gr load for that red oak 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Michael haha. BTW I suggest watch a 13 part series called _What on earth happened_ by Ewaranon to learn that the earth is not a globe. Link in my about tab.
Fuk that was alot of bullshit..probably woulda been better to just leave it alone
Why not make sure that you are truly saved by Jesus Christ and practice this way. Remorsefully confess with your heart your sins to Jesus Christ who is God and tell Him that you right now are repenting of your sins and you want to be born again of the Spirit from above. Tell Jesus that you are remorsefully sorry for breaking His commandments and that you are begging for forgiveness from Him. Allow His blood from the cross to wash away your sins. After this is done with your heart successfully the Holy Spirit will come to live within you and He will rebuild you from the inside out.
Look for signs that you are saved. Things like spreading the good news from Jesus, getting other people saved, a craving for the word of God, reading the Bible, etc… These things are known as a calling and fruit bearing. If you're not bearing fruit then keep doing it. Sometimes it takes time to get saved. Read Matthew chapter 13 from the King James Bible. God bless!!!!!
Baptise for remission of sins
Terrible match as with all toh floor repairs
A wise man said: " Never let perfection ruin a job well done"
Tell that lady to go make you a sandwich she’s just in the way. Her hammer skills are dangerous to your health
He knows how to patch tounge and groove oak flooring but doesn't know how to use a hammer properly.
Hitting it on the side is ok however a clear miss would be painful. The wide side of the hammer found its mark.....no injuries!
You sure are a numbnuts...
I'm going to take this to work and show apprentices what you're doing you're making me laugh this has got to be a joke
