You'd think that. But sometimes it happens lol.
I know my many pit deaths were caused by having a full mouth at the wrong time.

This is interesting to see after hearing Sakurais reasoning for Kirbys ability to fly is specifically to avoid a ton of instakill pit deaths
To be fair, lots of little kids play Kirby, so it’s not bad to assume that some stupid little kid would forget how to fly in mid air.
Then there's also certain abilities that stop kirby from flying such as wheel and ball

I like how in the 3D games (Blowout Blast, Forgotten Land) you don't instantly die when falling into a bottomless pit, but rather you just take a big chunk of damage and get teleported to the last safe spot. Nifty little accessibility change for younger/casual players in the Z-axis.

So basically in Forgotten Land you just lose 100 coins if Kirby dies or falls into a bottomless pit rather than losing a life like in the previous games (except the Yarn games)
