- Gas furnace not igniting? Goodman furnace wont ignite? DIY Gas furnace repair We address how to fix the 4 common failures that will cause a broken gas furnace to fail to ignite, operate, or function. Goodman furnace failed to ignite so the control board, the igniter, the flame sensor, and the pressure switch are inspected and/or replaced.
In this video you will see than a damaged furnace control board is NOT the huge catastrophe that if sounds like.
If you have a gas furnace that has failed or wont start after summer ended and intend to make diy repairs, come follow along while I repair my furnace to include replacing the control board and maybe you will pick up a few bits of useful information as we get a handle on things in the furnace room!

Thank you!!! You just saved us $2400 after the hvac guy told me that my 12 year old Goodman furnace was done. That it was burnt out and the parts would be more expensive to replace than just getting a new one. I seen your flashing diag led, looked at mine and counted the flashes and 3 says it was a stuck pressure switch stuck open. Bought one from Amazon for less than a 24 pack of beer and whallllaaaaa it’s working again. Called a different hvac company and asked them to go over and that said it’s all good that no cracks on the chambers, voltage good everywhere and besides a simple cleaning it’s all good. If all or at least the majority of repair guys were honest. I did reward his honesty by giving him a crisp $100 bill, besides a small fair check up fee. Thank you again I’m now subscribed and liked your channel.
If they get a call from you they will obviously charge you for coming to take a look at ' the beast' in the basement, then declare that you have a crack in/on the chamber/ it is dangerous/ and he has to condemn the furnace till you get it repaired ( REPLACED) and by golly he has one in stock. Where I live you can only buy a high-efficiency furnace and with the AC they are going to ' find lacking' you are looking at around $ 7,000 bucks Canadian all in. Drilling two holes through your basement wall, and in the winter, is not a great thought! Seen 4 units where I live ' getting new furnaces' and another bill to be paid back with interest charges. They got ya, and they know it. And as an extra for only a yearly fee, we will guarantee the parts in your new beast ( for so many years). YIKES!
They have no intention to fix anything/ the money is in the replacement of the units and the inevitable maint cost to maintain these high-priced units.
It seems to be the same all over North America. A lot of horror stories about these 'high-efficiency furnaces' all over the internet. Scary prices for basically the same part.
Thanks again/ big help/ as I had a few issues, and a faulty motherboard with an ignition ' no go' in the end solved it. For another year anyways.

Thank you Shane for this excellent video. It was extremely helpful for my furnace situation. I have the same Goodman as yours, about 400 units apart in S/N. Mine was giving the same symptoms, igniter was good, pressure switch working, single blink failure code. I pulled the board and did not find a mouse, or any signs of a short on the back of the board. The front was clean (no burned resistors or any signs of excessive heat), fuse was good. I cleaned all the terminal connectors and gave the relays on the board a firm but not savage whack with my finger, and when I put it all back together... she fired up. I am suspecting a sticky/tired relay for my igniter circuit. Tempted to try to desolder and give their contacts a light burnishing, or even replace them, but buying a new board (if they are still around $100) might be the more time efficient solution. Whatever way I end up going, thank you again for your detailed exploration of the furnace circuitry! The furnace just kicked on again as I type this!

Shane, you're spot on!! Pressure switch code, switch tested good out of the furnace. Not working on furnace. Orifice on blower plugged/rusted over? Cleaned out, unit fired right up! Saved me a lot of headache and money. And we were warm last night! Thanks for sharing your expertise! (Local heater man told my dad might be control board, or gas valve, should replace the unit!)

It's a long weekend here in Canada and the windchill is -20 C, and I had no heat. Thanks to this video (and a very similar Goodman) I was able to track it down to a stuck pressure switch, and a quick suck on the tube unstuck it long enough for us to get some heat flowing again until I can get a replacement switch. Thanks for such a clear video!

Getting colder now in Tennessee and sure enough, gas heater needs attention. My Goodman GPG 1336090M41CA is now about 11 years old and it's failure to start is intermittent. your video has given me a lot of ideas of what to check out, Ignitor/flame sensor (I will get both on order)... right now that baby fired up, house is warming up and when it's a little warmer outside (unit is outdoors) I'll get started cleaning stuff. GREAT VIDEO!! 👏👍

Thanks for the clear and informative video. Was awoked at 2AM to find my furnace wasn't working. Discovered the burners were not igniting. I found out my pressure switch wasn't working right from reading the blinking red light "code". Took off hose at blower end and the end piece broke off. Trimed the brittle ends of the hose, breathed through hose to check blockages and test switch. All seemed to work well. Tested the startup and the gas burner started right up.
Thanks for saving me time, money and having a cold late night to sleep through.

Nice presentation and camera work on your video. Great job troubleshooting the control board. I normally use a green Scotchbrite pad to clean my flame sensor, never thought about acetone. Might want to remove burner tubes periodically and wire brush the end of them as part of maintenance.

Thanks for the video. All I had to do was follow your instructions and noticed the pressure vaccum switch was making it's normal sound. So I tapped it a few times with the blower running and back in business. Probably saved me $500+ for a repair call!

Great video, a small critique would be to avoid touching the hot surface ignitor at all costs. Its very brittle material and the oils from your fingers could potentially cause a problem. One last recommendation to everyone with a furnace 10 years or older, is to buy a spare ignitor + flame sensor and leave it by your furnace. It's not a matter of "if" those will break, just "when". And if your luck is anything like mine, that "when" will come in the dead of winter, middle of the night and result in a $600-800 service call.

I have a question? Sounds like you know a lot about furnaces, long story short, we rent a house and last year the furnace broke so he got a new one,( I hope new) now we use the gas very minimal, we have space heaters because the cost of gas, sorry let me get to the point, we called him saying it's not working, we checked the gauge on the tank outside and it said 40%
The landlord said it's probably stuck I'm not sure if that's normal, yes it's cold here in Pennsylvania.
So we did get more gas and now it doesn't come on 🤔 I just hope we didn't break anything because we had no gas, but we thought we did.
What should we look for? Maybe it's not lit?
@@teriandjacobsworld gas is always, always cheaper to run than electric ones. if that wasnt the case, every appliance would be electric since it has way more advantages. so that shud be a good starting point. (Ex: gas driers (for your cloths) are cheaper to run than electric even though simply plugging in a drier into wall outlet is way easier than running gas pipe over to the drier). Im not going to go in depth in a mild, southern climate of a heat pump discussion....this is just a statement of a gas furnace vs space heater operating costs.
As far as why its not running, a furnace has a very distinct sequence of operations (like a straight forward math problem). so when u try to run it, u have to pay attention to when the furance stops running compared with the expected sequence.
You can youtube a furnace sequence of operations, but the simple stuff would be does it try to ignite, then stay light in the burners, is the gas valve properly selected for either natural gas or propane, was it even installed properly to begin with, etc. Get some background youtube knowledge on a sequence of operations for a furnace, then observe when it stops running and i can help you out then.
On an oil fired boiler, never touch the rock filtering on the back of a nozzle. The oils and dirt on your finger can clog oil flow, or distort the flame pattern in the fire box.. For those heating with oil fired heat
Funny I definitely keep spare capacitors and a contactor handy but have never changed out anything on my 20+ yr old furnace. Knock on wood now. At least I know how to do it now
Oh yeah thanks for the awesome video I fixed my furnace just by cleaning and vacuuming out the flue which was very sooty and had a few beetles in there too lol .

the igniter is ceramic- do not touch with hands. oil from hands will cause early failure of the igniter. ask me how i know
Yep, you are correct... Sadly, while filming inside an area not much bigger than a saltine box and using one hand on the cameral and the other hand to work, I messed that part up.

The Four (4) P's ~ Proper Prevention (Preparedness) Prevents Problems. Your instructional video is straight forward and presents an easy step-by-step process to diagnose, identify and solve (fix) the problem. Start with the simple things first and work your way through the sequence. You helped remind me of that simple rule. My solution was as easy as re-attaching the vacuum hose. Voila! Fixed my furnace this mornig. Your 15 min video saved me a 500$ service call. Ignitor was glowing, checked the Pressure sensor: The tube (and the sensor) were filled up with water. Drained it, dryed it out with the air compressor, got the nice click by blowing into it. Back into service at no cost.... was a 15 minutes job! Your video literrally explained all that is needed to know.
I had the same issue and was surprised by the amount of water that drained out of the pressure sensor tube. Any idea what causes that problem and how to avoid it in the future?

Awesome video, "Thank you so much", My problem ended up being the pressure switch hose i guess it wobbled loose ,working like a champ now, just in time we are expecting temps. to drop down in the 20"s tonight and a winter storm moving in with high winds

I have a different furnace and a seperate panel to control zone door motors. The zone motor panel board was shot, found one on ebay and replaced the board and attached the wires one at a time onto new board. Installed but didn't work.
HVAC tech found "dip" switches on the board that needed to be in certain positions but weren't. Once the dip switches correctly positioned I was good. So depending on the setup you have it might be a tougher R and R than shown,
Still good example of troubleshooting. Thanks for posting.

In fact, I know that from experience... since mine was gelled up a few weeks ago and I put some diesel 911 in the tank to get it running... and now it looks like my next video will be how to replace the fuel pump since my fuel pump seems to have quit me today!
It was an old fuel pump and I suppose the diesel 911 probably finished the seals off.
At least it is another cheap DIY fix!

Good step by step trouble shooting. You saved me from ordering a circuit board. 4 days to get a new igniter so I'm lighting it with a BBQ lighter. I turned the thermostat to 80 so I could shut it off when I wanted to. It ran for 3 or 4 min and shut the fire off. I was thinking the over heat switch was turning it off. I was right. I have over half the registers closed in rooms I don't use. I opened a couple trying to keep the over heat switch from shutting things down but no good. It was 55 out today so we were OK but now it's 35 so I went to the basement to cycle it get the temp up so I could go to bed and sitting in a chair relighting it when it shuts off.. OK OK I'm getting to it. I glanced over and saw the gas shut off valve. I started closing it till I just barely noticed a reduction in flame and noise. PERFECT! Back up stairs with a beer and TV till It got to 75 and shut it off. Going to bed.
By the way, that over heat switch has been working like that for 11 yrs. I think I'm going to leave the flame where it's at. Anything wrong with that? 10 yrs I replaced the vacuum switch. 16 yrs now the igniter.

I can't say that I would agree to "running around" an overheat issue for very long.
The safety switches are there to stop a malfunction to keep you from having more serious issues. Fires, carbon & oher gas issues etc... (stuff that could possibly kill you)
If you are unable to get the furnace to function on its own without tripping safeties and need to manipulate the furnace to make it work anyhow... I am honestly afraid for your safety.
I would advise doing whatever is needed to get the problem sorted out and the furnace working safely ASAP.
I know... not what you wanted to hear, but I do tend to skip past the fluff and tell it like I see it.

@@AHandleOnThings The furnace was replaced after the floods in 2004, they were hard to get as hurricane Ivan ruined lots of furnaces. Anyway 1200sq ft well insulated house I think the 110,000 might be to big for the house and duct work. Yes I have 4 of the 8 vents shut off in rooms I don't want to heat$$. I ordered the new igniter 3:30 the 13th. As of now it hasn't left the Lancaster post office yet the 15th. (none to be had local) Temps in Pittsburgh aren't to bad 49 to 65 today.
With cutting the gas shut off back just very little I only have to light it once now and runs perfect till I shut it off (the over heat isn't tripping any more)
I don't care for the heat going up the chimney but $120 peak heating bill W/hot water tank doesn't justify a new one with plastic chimney yet. Thanks.
