1987 baby here. i feel you on the 90's vibes and missing those times. my humble perspective for what its worth, we miss the 90's because it truly was a much more simple time. the world seemed to not move as fast as it does now. being an adolescent in the 90's felt exciting and everything seemed so interesting and ultimately good things were coming down the pipeline. Now in 2024, just turning 37, I have a son and another son expecting in Sept. I write this to you to let you know life does get better. you grow and mature and learn the silly games life can play on you- but ultimately good times are here in the present.
this k mart version of my understanding of life is that try to keep things simple- i don't engage in the fads of social media and whats "trending". take it easy with the smart phone use and screen times. not lecturing you here, but suggestions that ive found helpful to simplify my life. enjoying what i have versus what is programmed to "influence" me of what others think i want. combining these efforts can make you more present and simplify your life.... maybe even mimic a lifestyle we had as kids growing up in the 90's...

The 1980s, often remembered fondly for its pop culture, vibrant music, and technological advancements, also had its share of challenges and difficulties. Here's a detailed rundown of some significant issues and events that people like you often conveniently forget:
      Economic Issues
      1. Recession and Inflation: The early 1980s saw a severe economic recession in many parts of the world, particularly in the United States and the UK. High inflation rates, unemployment, and a slow recovery process affected many households.
      2. Debt Crisis: Many developing countries faced a crippling debt crisis. Latin American countries, in particular, struggled with massive external debts, leading to economic instability and hardship for their populations.
      Political and Social Unrest
      1. Cold War Tensions: The ongoing Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty. The threat of nuclear war was a constant concern, highlighted by events such as the Able Archer 83 exercise which brought the world close to a nuclear confrontation.
      2. Falklands War: In 1982, Argentina and the United Kingdom went to war over the Falkland Islands. The conflict resulted in significant casualties and heightened tensions in the region.
      3. Iran-Iraq War: This prolonged conflict, lasting from 1980 to 1988, caused massive destruction and loss of life. It also disrupted the global oil supply, contributing to economic instability.
      Health Crises
      1. AIDS Epidemic: The emergence of the AIDS epidemic in the early 1980s caused widespread fear and confusion. The lack of understanding about the disease and its transmission led to stigma and discrimination against those affected.
      2. Famine in Ethiopia: In the mid-1980s, Ethiopia experienced a devastating famine, resulting in hundreds of thousands of deaths. The crisis garnered international attention and led to significant humanitarian efforts, including the famous Live Aid concert in 1985.
      Environmental Issues
      1. Chernobyl Disaster: The Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986 was one of the worst nuclear accidents in history. It released a massive amount of radioactive material into the environment, leading to long-term health and environmental consequences.
      2. Bhopal Gas Tragedy: In 1984, a gas leak at a pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, caused one of the world's worst industrial disasters. Thousands of people died, and many more suffered long-term health effects.
      Social Issues
      1. Apartheid in South Africa: The apartheid regime in South Africa faced growing international condemnation. The internal struggle against apartheid led to significant violence and oppression, with widespread human rights abuses.
      2. Racial Tensions in the US: The 1980s saw significant racial tensions in the United States, marked by incidents such as the 1980 Miami riots and the 1989 Central Park jogger case, which highlighted deep-seated issues of racism and inequality.
      Technological and Industrial Changes
      1. Decline of Traditional Industries: The decline of traditional manufacturing industries, especially in Western countries, led to job losses and economic hardship for many workers. The shift towards a more service-oriented economy was difficult for those affected.
      2. Challenger Disaster: In 1986, the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster shocked the world. The shuttle broke apart shortly after launch, killing all seven crew members and causing a temporary halt to the US space program.
      Conclusion
While the 1980s are often remembered for their cultural vibrancy and technological progress, the decade also faced significant challenges that affected millions of lives globally. Economic struggles, political tensions, health crises, environmental disasters, and social issues all contributed to making life in the 1980s difficult for many. Just because some individuals may look back with nostalgia, it's important to recognize that not everyone had a good experience, and many faced severe hardships. Reflecting on this complexity reminds us that our memories of "good times" can often overlook the struggles and suffering of others.

The population is depressed, anxious, hyper mediated, addicted to technology and generally living the life of an npc drone with no attention span. Simultaneously the oligarchic-intel agency-big tech-globalist axis that actually runs the world reveals itself more and more everyday. Everything feels less human and I can’t help but think that’s precisely the goal.

What made the 1980s such a wonderful time for many is that technology was just enough to make life more convenient and fun without making everyone a slave to it. Children and even adults would be outside playing sports, riding bikes, swimming in the pools, playing games, or hanging out in the parks (there were parks with lots of trees and playgrounds on just about every neighborhood street corner it seemed). Shopping malls, roller skating rinks, and arcades were always packed. Pizza Huts, Blockbuster, and movie theaters were always packed on Friday and Saturday nights. Oddly enough, I don't recall as many fitness gyms as there are today. Even in the 1970s and early 1990s, it was like this too. Family values were still strong, patriotism was normal, friendships were genuine, the music was real and moved the soul, and food was not only used as nutritional medicine but was real food! And the feeling of positivity, being in control of your life, and creating your own destiny without barely any interference from government made the 1980s amazing. Sure, there were problems back then but not as crazy and chaotic as it is today. I just cannot express enough how "radical" the 1980s were. I wish everyone could go back in time and experience it.

Me and 2 other guys shared a 3 bedroom apt above a deli there, paying $220 rent each! You had to search around for deals like that, but at least they could be found, and the neighborhood was essentially protected by the mafia. I was saving money like crazy on a busboy's earnings. Impossible today. The sense of freedom and possibilities was so huge. It wasn't just "youth" it was being able to have almost nothing and yet not be worried about tomorrow at all.

I was there at the Berlin wall when it "fell" and there was a pervasive optimism that was nearly world-wide. Technology was just beginning to show true promise and the huge future companies like Google were just a few years away. Apple was still 3 years from releasing the I-pod which saved their company and Elon Musk was 17 years old and had just moved to Canada to avoid mandatory conscription into the South African military. An American could travel nearly anywhere, even the middle east as the Gulf War was still a year away. It really was an optimistic moment.

The filtered synth sounds evoke a sensation of memory, but the synth pop hits on the radio in the 80s that would have played in an office were crisp, jangly and angular, the soundtrack to a pressured time of remarkable materialism. I'm just here to sprinkle a little reality check. As a history nut, I like reminding people the world has always been a little chaotic. Many people in the Western world had a great life in the 80s - in some ways it was like a new Day-Glo-drenched working-mom 1950s. But it was also the decade of AIDS, nuclear disasters, and we were still in the Cold War. People behind the Iron Curtain had a completely different 80s experience. Just sayin'!
We also have opportunities now we didn't have in the 80s. I make income for my family writing on the internet. If I had a family in the 80s, I'd probably be completely dependent on my husband, like my mom was. My dad had to join the Army because there were no other opportunities for a young family where he was from. The internet has changed everything, folks! If you long for a simpler time, create a beautiful life for yourself and your family as best you can and raise your kids to appreciate all of life's experiences. They'll create the decades to come. We create our experiences now.
This music is pretty chill, though. 😄

Isn’t it strange? I work more efficiently when I pretend that I’m in the 1980s (or some time in the past). Perhaps I’m romanticising periods I haven’t been alive yet or perhaps… it feels freeing not to think about social media and the present/future.

in 1989 I was 20 and in love with the woman in our office with one leg (I don't think she was A.I. generated). So 1) I guess we didn't mind and 2) I didn't expect to think that much about 1989 today

@PhaedrusAK no matter when you live, there you are. I look at video of the 80s sometimes, and the business signs and cars and clothes look almost exotic now, but at the time, it felt like today feels to us now. In order to see where you are now, you have to be somewhere else later.
