The Kia Niro Hybrid has 139 HP. Somehow I had 135 HP for it in this video. PHEV niro has 180 HP and EV niro has 201 HP. Cheers!
Lots going on with the Prius... including the price... it’s very expensive, if you compare it to a corolla hybrid.
Very helpful 👍-thks for a wonderful review!
I have the ES hybrid (2022) and LOVE it. Extremely fuel efficient, lots of features, dependable, etc. Only way to improve it is make it PHEV and AWD.
Anything from Toyota. Period. End of story. No competition. Better than everything ever.
Hybrid systems excel in urban driving. They do spectacularly well on fuel economy in the city but not nearly so well on the highway. It would be good so see a breakdown on relative economy of these cars in the city vs on the highway. That allows people to judge which would be better for their typical mix of city vs highway driving.
Hey Kirk, thanks for another great video! Yes, I do hate buying gas, but not only paying for it, also the inconvenience of it as well. Therefore, I am looking for a vehicle with the most range. Currently,I am leaning toward the 2023 Lexus RX350h, which with its 37 mpg and large tank has a range over 600 miles! Have you considered doing a video of the vehicles with the greatest range? Would be interested to see! Thanks again and keep up the great work!
I’d go Camry hybrid. More roomy and similar mpg to the Prius but the interior looks more normal
This last model year for camry before a new one comes in. Not the best time to buy one imo.
@@BruceWayne-eh4im but on the other hand there may be better deals on the older one to make way for the new one.
Agreed, unless your garage is tight, Camry is pretty big
Wait until the Fall possibly when the 2024 Camry Hybrid gets released.
@@sammydavis991 surprised they haven’t unveiled it already. By this time in 2017 we knew what the 2018 Camry looked like.
Kirk, So many of these high mpg cars are now low slung sedans/liftbacks which severely impacts practicality. The body shape of the Niro makes it a real standout. I hope Toyota comes to market with its outstanding new Hybrid drivetrain installed in something sensibly shaped like the Niro.
The RAV4
@@meowski916 The RAV4 Hybrid is a fine CUV but it comes with a 15 mpg penalty compared to a Prius.
I actually am waiting for the Prius to be available to preorder. But I am interested in Plug in Hybrids you should totally do a video about that as well!
You are the go to for buying a new vehicle, we were almost going to get the RDX until your review in south Florida explaining fuel economy and air conditioning. We got the venza instead
Congrats! Thanks for watching :)
Hate buying gas? Here have a $5k dealer markup instead! 👌👌👌
Dealers suck 😭
Shop around, you don't have to pay extra in 2023. The shortage is OVER.
Yea where i am a 5k mark up equates to a 5.5mpg difference over 200k miles. So essentially if the mpg is within 6mpg and at least 5k lower in price it will equate to similar cost at 200k miles
I like your jokes 😂😂
5-10k markup the better the mileage more like it.
Agree with the 2023 Prius taking the crown. However, due to availability, looking at the 2023 Corolla Hybrid SE and the Elantra Hybrid Blue. What are your thoughts b/w the two to help make a decision?
The appeal of the toyota for me is the hatchback capability of it. I wish honda woukd bring the civic hybrid here. It has almost the same mpg but imo the interior looks way better in a civic
The one that most impressed me was the Honda Accord with 44 MPG and its super quiet engine & no clutter under the hood. But I wouldn't trade in my Rav4 hybrid for it. Before my Rav4 hybrid I had a 2018 Honda Insight which got me up to 75 MPG (Imperial) during the summer months & the engine was ultra quiet also. I traded it for the Rav4 because it was way too low to the ground for my liking and no spare tire or towing capability.
Lexus ES HYBRID is the value for luxury and premium grade midsize sedans.
True, I have one, a '22. It's an amazing car.
@@chezzyperson3339 Yep. I added ambient lighting so it looks like a German but it won't have electrical gremlins and high oil change bills ha ha.
@@chezzyperson3339 well they kind of do on the top trim level but it's very dim and pathetic. I now have lots of colours and it's much brighter. I also added lights to other areas like the door pockets
I'll take the ES300h purely for the luxury. I may have to go drive one! If the Prius hadn't compromised interior space so much (head room, cargo space), I'd be down with it.
You could try a Camry hybrid in its top end trim with all the luxury features
Great video
I'm most impressed with the TLX you passed.
Great review!
Thanks!
Camry Hybrid for me, in Blueprint blue.
For our daily city driver, the Corolla Hybrid FWD. For our play car, either a Miata, or maybe even the coming MR 2.
Rav4 hybrid and prime should be on this list
Just got a 2023 venza limited, great hybrid also.
Great hybrid. Was gonna buy one until wife said Lexus only. We order the NX350H instead.
Awesome channel
Camry hybrid gets how many mpg?! plus that acceleration? it looks good & aggressive to boot!
Prius is crushing it but to have AWD is peak for snowy areas (all they need is protective undercoating for rust prevention = bullet proof road trips)
If you add reliability in your needs (but only smart shoppers do this), then Hyundai/Kia are out from this list. Mazda will soon enter this list.
The first question that should be addressed by anyone buying a hybrid is it going to have a decent pay back period when it comes to using less gas. If you only drive a few thousand miles a year, you will never make your money back over the base car. You may get more back when you sell it but will lose money considering the cost of money (what you could get get from investing that extra money you save from the initial cost).
At $4 a gallon over 200k mikes 1mpg higher saves you about $330 in the 50mpg range. Now at say 30mpg you save 920 from 29-30mpg.... but thats over 200k miles. Thats literally less than $2 a week for a 29mpg car vs a 30mpg car.... for the 49 to 50 mpg car its only like 50c a week. All of these are at an average of 15k miles a year. I dont see why people make it a priority to get the best mpg car what we are talking a couple bucks a week difference. Most cars in tge same class are within 5mpg of each other. So we are only talking about a 1-5k difference over 13 years. Thats really not a lot. You can save that by getting a car that is cheaper to repair and maintain, has cheaper initial cost, cheaper insurance. Idk 5k difference does not seem like a lot to me over 13 years
I am really considering an awd prius
But I'd buy the smallest light weight wheels and keep the 19s for snow tires
Interesting. Would you buy smaller rim size or just lighter rims and wheels??? Then put a snow tire of the 19 inch rims???? Having owned a 2017 and a 2022 Prius. They stop in a straight line on snow/ice. I have played with snows/4 seasons in the front and just all-seasons in the rear. Not having to go anywhere on snowy days it is likely I will keep mid priced all seasons on and limit my driving on snowy days. Sometimes hard to justify the best less they wear well for the price.
The Toyota's is way ahead of the Koreans in reliability , fit & finish , resale value and performance . The Toyota models today are terrific .
before starting to talk about 'fuel economy' of of hybrid cars you shall explain (nice topic for a video) how it is determined. I myself can not figure out. The reference "Worldwide harmonized Light vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP)" test profile takes only 30min , and simulates distance of 53km with different speed. How do you test a hybrid car economy? with battery charged? empty? How it translates to real conditions? for me real condition is 1200km in 10h with 3 stops of 15 min. My diesel family car needs no refueling, and usually I end with gas for next 100km.
Been watching every new video of yours related to the Prius. I feel like the only huge disadvantages are the lack of room and cargo, but it doesn’t seem too bad.
I’m waitlisted for the Prime, with fuel economy + the new sexy look being what I’m really after anyway. 40 mile range all electric sounds great for a plug-in hybrid.
What’s the wait time frame you were given?
@@lalove1017 I think for the XSE Premium it could be anytime this year, maybe July? I’ll have to check again, but it’s also dependent on which trims they get.
@@dylancao7131 I’m just debating buying a non plug-in version now and then getting on the waiting list for the Prime. I’m wondering what the price point will be? I’m hearing 40k plus for the Prime. I’m just not ready to go full EV and with this new body style I feel like it’s a win win!
@@lalove1017 Uh, the plug-in version is still a hybrid, but it can run 40 miles on solely electric. I would do brief research before committing to large financial decisions. The two are basically the same, and the plug-in should only be $2-4k more which is definitely worth it since you get more fuel options. Basic hybrid won’t have an EV option.
@@dylancao7131 oh yea I understand the differences between the two. From watching other videos on here they’re protecting the Prime to be around 40k. Also in my area they’re saying it’ll be a year or so before the Prime is available. I’ll end up getting the non plug in version for now until the Prime is available. Was just wondering what was the timeline you were given for the Prime in your area?
Never thought I would say this, but I want the Prius.
I like the Toyota Prius and Kia Niro the best.
Damn the Prius looks so good 👌💯
would love to see a list of 'economy' cars that one can actually buy at, or below, MSRP.
Prius 💯 it’s going to get so many Car of the Year awards, rightfully so.
So would it be better to put the 17's on a higher level trim Prius to get the better mpg?
Maybe. That incurs a small cost though
Waiting for new Pree-us plug in.
Can’t wait till you get your Prius!
You'll have to.
the Prius needs to offer a wagon version of this. More practical.
Prius needs to improve trunk space and add more efficiency for 2024
I think the new Corolla hybrids lost the light weight 15 inch alloys which would contribute to worse mpg’s
LE trim has tiny wheels
16" shouldn't be a big difference
The SE trim has 18” wheels and yes they drastically reduce mpgs, I haven’t gotten over 40mpg on my SE awd Corolla hybrid yet during winter
Perhaps you have a little too much focus on performance?
It's generally not that important for those interested in economy.
Critical flaw. Too much emphasis on zero to 60 times. I remember the original GTI that was called the pocket rocket from VW was zero to 60 in 10 seconds. It's all relative.
I went in to my local Toyota dealership alone for their 2023 Prius XLE and their salesman marked it up for an additional $20k on top of the MSRP. I walked out. I’m a woman btw.
Most East coast dealers are garbage for anyone, man, woman, or extraterrestrial. I tried to buy a 2022 Hyundai Plug-In Ioniq hybrid. I live in the midwest and it is not available, I called several east coast dealers and once they said "xxxx over MSRP", I said not paying over MSRP and was instantly hung up on (normally with an expletive thrown in for good measure). Went to Colorado and had my pick of the litter for MSRP.
My pick is the Accord. Next the Lexus, then the Toyota Crown
I love buying gas meeting people there paying cash, coffee donuts chips big gulp once in a while, saying hi to an actual cashier that does the bagging and money changes with a smile and a employed human instead of a machine helping my community.
No phone needed.
And yes I can use cash and buy things and gas without Google and big brother knowing
No charging at a machine only stark charging station is what I hate, no people no cash allowed different clubs to sign in not reliable and not employing any people in the community no human smiles and endless adapters and complications in a bad day.. and your phone is needed everything recorded and tracked
Need a list for highway drivers. Hybrid doesn’t help me at all driving 70+ for 90% of my miles.
You can save even more by buying a used one with 50 thousand miles. You do gamble that the previous owner changed the oil every 5 thousand miles. Also more of a gamble that the big battery and generator will last a long time. Hopefully the new Prius will be as reliable as the previous more ugly ones.
Can you do a video about the next generation Lexus IS, I am not excited that it’s gonna be electric and at least give it a hybrid option
Unfortunately governments are ramming EV's down everyone's throats. Buy a gas car today if you like gas because it's only going to get worse.
There is no next generation IS. We are still in the third generation. It’s just been refreshed since 2013
@@mattmekhaeil you missed today's news out of Japan (Best Car magazine). It will be all EV for the refreshed 2025 IS.
@@InternetDude looks like the IS isn’t going to leave it’s 3rd generation. Another refresh 💀. This one will be the worst one yet an ev 😭🤮
@@InternetDude It looks fantastic. Only thing is it will be built on the "old" eTNGA platform, not the new one that is to emerge in 2026. Still, its styling is a hit IMO and the shooting brake is really interesting. Shooting brake in North America is doubtful, however.
Crown? Venza? RAV4?
5:48 is it me or is that rust on the bonnet above the A in KIA? Guess KIAs come with rust out of the factory.
Prius, if you can ever get one.
Honestly it does not matter if it has the most mpg if toyota dealers are charging 2k over msrp for it.
Yep, I have a 2023 Lexus ES300h, Ultra Luxury trim with additional options and dealer add-ons. She get 42+ MPG in the city and higher on the HWY. Love the vehicle, too bad that don't make that many and Toyota shall be moving the ES production from Kentucky back to Japan. Production numbers are anemic, so Toyota shall be re-tooling the Lexus Kentucky plant for God knows what.
Lack of smart keyless entry on the 23 LE Prius really killed it for me. Ended up just getting a 21 LE for a good deal and didn’t have to deal with low inventory or markups. 4th gen is goofy looking but still a really good car. Niro EX HEV was also high in the list but we’re also hard to find.
EXACTLY no smart key on the LE is bad. I would gladly pay for it but they don't offer that option (they do for the corolla hybrid le).
Prius is best for the money and durability
Yep. But wait will be 1-2 years if you are willing to pay markup.
I would really love a RAV4 hybrid with more power. Yes, I know the Prime exists but it's a lot more expensive!
Skipped telling us the mpg on the Kia Niro.
Hey Kirk I Have Heard toyota are developing a 7 Seater Corolla Cross
Huh? Don't get that
@@KirkKreifels Yeah I Also Just Saw That and by the way they are developing it for the Indian market
I hate getting my Catalytic convertor stolen the most too.
The 2023 prius doesn't have as many valuable metals in the catalytic converter, it is expected to be much less attractive to thieves than previous generations
@@Requinix17 I'm sure they're still very attractive to criminals.
@@Requinix17 If a group of bandits pulls up to a parking lot with a 2023 Prius and a 2023 Impreza, which catalytic convertor do you think they're gonna take.
I was thinking yesterday about who makes a fun to drive hybrid car that is more affordable (aside from BMW/Volvo/Mercedes)? 🤔 Crickets... Strangely, right now I'm thinking maybe it's the new Prius, but I'd really like to see that amplified. No manufacturer is really creating something from that perspective. Perhaps a GR Prius or GR Prius Prime??
Elantra Limited Hybrid will be my absolute choice on the list. I get more tech features like a digital key, voice command, sunroof, 64 colors ambient lighting, memory seating, heated and ventilated seats, 10.25 digital cluster and infotainment, smart trunk access, independent rear suspension, and most importantly, NO CVT!
What’s wrong with Toyota’s eCVT setup?
Like the corolla sedan. Prius looks nice to. But the Kia is an ugly car in my opinion.
Cool
Anyone ever own a kia without engine or transmission issues? Buddy just had his whole engine replaced in his sonata because it was eating oil. 1qt every 2k miles
Yup.
Dont know about that....my 10 year old diesel has better mpg ...yes i drive it more on the highway...and that also helps...
Yea but governments wants to eliminate diesels, so taxes are really expensive compared to petrol hybrids
Elantra hybridnis upto 51-58
Looks are subjective I guess, but the Niro looks gross?? 😬🤢
Haha I like it 😂
I agree. Most Kia’s do
I like everything they did with the Prius but it should have become a more roomy hatchback!!
What about prius prime?
Autobots let's roll out! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
So the old Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid is still the most ecological hybrid car out there lol
I have a 2022 Hyundai Ioniq plug-in hybrid and on 3 trips trips to Las Vegas and back I got 48 (was very windy), 52, 53 MPG (1850 miles one way). Granted I did not go over 75 (even in the 80 mph zones of Utah). I have 24000 miles so far with no issues in 2 years. It is a small car, but I don't need more day to day (I do have a F-150 with very very low miles).
That Prius dashboard is just horrible looking…that alone would keep me out of this car. Too bad, because the exterior looks great.
When I sold cars I thought Hybrid was best car on the market.
But I learned you have to replace the battery for long term customers.
I'm going on 20 years with my
Rav4
CorollaVirus
and Tundra
Are still running strong.
Only problem's I've had with my Toyotas is crappy plastic button and door handle.
My Corolla has been lifted and have a prerunner bummer and wench. And 17" Scions Wheels.
Why I call it the CorollaVirus™️
I don't trust Kia or Hyundai engines in the long run. Plus the Dual clutch transmissions are asking for trouble.
You left out the MPG one most of these cars. L
I think plug in hybrids are useless. You still to get gas and then have to plug it in daily as well or you will not get the efficiency you paid for. Just a hassle. A gas car, mild hybrid or full EV are all better choices.
Do people actually buy Hyundai & KIA in other states other than CA?? I can't take them seriously. I think they're junk.
For daily commute, any if thr hyundai/kia will do.
And when you go to buy a Toyota the dealers tack on $10,000.+ because people keep buying over priced cars.
Exactly. One dealer asking $9995 on a fully loaded $40K version + 9995 markup. Insane.
new prius
10k+ markup on all of them.
Just get an ICE vehicle.
I'm tempted to buy a 2023 Kia Niro PHEV. Looking forward to your upcoming review.
Funny how you can get 50 percent better mpg but you are paying 50 percent more per gallon with this administration. So no savings. But much more complication and a lot less fun
I like everything about the new Kia nitro except the hideous rear end
That accord is so ugly
The only thing we have in common, is that we don't like to pay for fuel. For the rest, I hate hybrids. They are heavy, complex, expensive to repair and don't last 15 years. Still, I don't want to pay for fuel too many times. So, I drive a Japanese econobox. Low fuel use, nimble to drive, easy to park, reliable, and it will remain reliable for 15 years. And it costs less than 20.000 dollars. A much better advice. When do you need 8 seconds from 0-60? When do you use all the space? And you pay 10's of thousands of dollars extra initally and thousands upon thousands of dollars subsequently for moving air and complexity. And no, I am not poor. I could afford any of these cars you present. But it would be foolish in my book.
Ron that hurts. I am sure we have a lot more in common than fuel frugality.
Have you missed out on how insanely reliable every Prius generation has been? The battery failures are sooo blown out of proportion. You think a hybrid battery is expensive? Tesla Model 3 battery is $18000 to replace.
Hate buying petrol? Get an EV…
Hate charging on the road, buy a Hybrid.
Toyota hybrid, are just made to be a little better than all the rest.
It's strange that Köningsegg who has done hybrids for 10 years, make a better hybrid than Toyota who has done this for 25 years.
The Gemera has a 600 hp engine, and a totalt output 1700 hp. That's over 3 time more.
Toyota prius has a 149 hp engine, and a totalt output of 199 hp That's 0,25 times more.
So, they are just making fake hybrides.
The future are electric.
If you are going to get a Toyota hybrid, the best you can do, are leasing.
When the production of Electric cars goes up, there will be hard to sell.
If you look at Norway you will see the trend. The car owners in Norway have the option to sell abroad. But, countries that are adapting slower, will not have this option.
Elantra hybrid blue for the win. For $25K upwards of 56mpg and a real transmission that won't fall apart 30-100K miles this'll be the one for me. Manufactures don't seem to ever get CVT right and for a few mpg it's not worth it. All to get attract eyes/extra long term cash flow with that mpg to unassuming customers in for a big bill twice to three times during the vehicle's lifetime. 4th owner here with mazda 6 from 2011 of an abused transmission that finally got it's first fluid change, cleanup, filter/gasket replacement. 1 through 3rd gear are worn out with a bunch of metal gunk to the magnet on the pan but still keeps on kicking like it's no one's business! My father's 2007 Honda ridgeline is even more impressive. Almost 270k miles and starting to show issues now. He religiously does his own oil changes early bird before recommended service time, but not much else except new LED headlights and radiator. Never services the transmission but he tows large hay loads and his boat no issues. Been chattering on like a baboon but just showing my viewpoint and opinions. Can't beat a traditional automatic!
I feel like most of the cars in this list don’t even use traditional belt driven CVT’s. They’re either a planetary gearbox or something similar. Belt driven CVT’s have given CVTS a bad name.
@@GaryKetchum808 True, but if proven that they’re not belt driven I’d still stay clear. CVT in general are not reliable with their high friction based design with CVT fluid to enhance that vs what’s in engine and regular automatics made to lubricate more than and create a better barrier between metals. Still waiting to see a proven CVT that can match a traditional automatic.
Toyota's eCVT is of the Planetary gearbox. Honda eCVT is more of a serial hybrid with a clutch to tie the engine to the wheels at high speeds. Honda's as a result are smoother but fall behind on highway efficiency.
