As a washington (western) native that sadly had to move to Georgia 2 years ago for my career, love watching your videos always make me happy. of course love the reviews as well too.
Simple and real quick guide thru out all of that car!!! great JOB!!SUBSCRIBEDDDDD!! do u have review on kia?
if you're on an icy curvy road going down hill and you dont want to use the brakes to slow down you can use the paddle shifters to slow down reducing your chances of losing traction on ice.
Great review Dave, you should try your hands on vlogging. Absolutely loved the intro !
Have been enjoying your videos as of late, decided to subscribe today. :)
very professional(show must go on)...we look up to u (sir)...as a journalist,keep it up,and GOD BLESS U,and ur Family.
Great review. Answered questions and provided views (rear seat arm rest, cargo area, 5'11" sitting in rear, etc) that I hadn't seen in other reviews. Thanks!
+Car Guy Thank you.... btw... have you SUBSCRIBED to my channel? I'd appreciate the support :-) Dave
I really enjoy your reviews, Dave. Love the Tigers hat. Are you coming to the NAIAS in January?
GREAT review, Dave, and thanks for sharing! I agree with you about the paddle shifters and manual shifting usage and I would leave everything alone like you. I am NOT a big fan of that light-colored interior, though, and good luck in trying to keep that clean, esp. if someone has dogs in the car. And what breeds are the dogs?? Maximus looked like a pit mix but not sure about the others. They were very well-behaved with you and I guess they did not see the deer since the deer would have ran if they had seen the dogs. Anyhow, I hope you and Melissa get a quick sale and good price on your home AND that you find a new home in Spokane before the snows hit which could begin at any time! Cheers from New Mexico!
Love your videos Dave. Informative and yet fun at the same time, How long does it take you to prepare for a review? Do you make a script or just use "crib notes" with all the pertinent information and do it off the cuff? Do you do rehearsals? An overview on how you prepare for one of your reviews as far as research for the car you are reviewing, figuring out how you will present it before you get in front of the camera would be fascinating. Maybe a question for your Q and A segment? Thanks and keep up the good work # Askanymandriver
I use the shifting thingy when I'm lowering my speed or to stop. It's easier on the brakes and the motor doesn't suffer (change gears under 3k rpm). I also use it when accelerating (passing let's say), because even if I floor it sometimes, it doesn't change to a lower enought gear to get that pounce. I own a 2010 Mazda 3 sport. I only changed my brake pads at 90 000 miles... no other repairs. Still going good and strong! Thanks Mazda!
Your outro music suites your dog perfectly. Kinds of a smooth powerful beat. And Maximus seems like a smooth powerful dog.
Another nailed review. Great job. Thinking about getting one of these, manual :)
Freaking awesome review and awesome dog's too 😎 love the Mazda 3 hatchback sweet car love the stylizing.
Dave, I'm interested in getting a hatchback but not sure which to get. What are the top 5 to consider? Looking for good fuel economy, great cargo/rear leg room and isn't "slow". Thanks!
nice review. been thinking of upgrading my 2007. this is way advanced
quick question to ask. how many miles do u get out a full tank of gas on this madza 3 hatchback from your experience ?
Great review as always! A view from the back seat would help perhaps.
Hey brother , I'm digging this car my question is would I be better in this or the upcoming 2017 Impreza 5 door? And out the door pricing auto witch will be my better choice?
I am thinking of getting a mazda 3 base model auto but it is my first time buying. all the invoice prices I find online are ~18100 which is only few hundred dollars lower than MSRP of 18875. I was wondering how much lower I can negotiate. How much did you guys pay for this car, excluding fees such as destination, acquisition, etc. please help!
You are very trusting with that little guy following from the rear:) Must be well trained. Love that relaxing area.
+Mike Smith The little guy is awesome, thanks!
The little ones make all the difference, but the big ones appreciate you too!
Been loving my 2014 Mazda 3 GT Hatch quite a lot. Love the roominess, the pep to the engine, the looks and the rather good fuel mileage. I can say for a fact I can fit my Specialized road bicycle in the back with the seats down...with both wheels on!
Hi Dave. On your Kia Niro review you showed that your road bike slid into the back without having to take off the front wheel. Can you do that with this generation of Mazda 3 hatchback? The cargo hold looks as long as in the Niro, but probably not quite as tall.
So would you prefer this model or the Mazda 6?
As a Brit contemplating a Mazda3 this is really a very good video. I've been told (as at Jan16) there is neither DAB radio or a reversing camera, and sadly we Brit's are limited to a 2 litre petrol or 2.2diesel 150bhp... I am not a fan of paddle shifters and would usually go manual, but if we had 2.5option I'd probably go for auto. We also have a Clumber Spaniel of similar size & I wondered what you thought of both the parcel shelf itself (v light & flimsy?) & the difficulty pulling it out? There's no floor net option for us either and no spare wheel. Many thanks :)
whats the difference between 2014 and 2016 model?
Max the dog seems really sweet! I use the paddle shifters in my Honda Fit all the time. It has little horsepower and no torque, so I need to use the paddle shifters to keep it in its sweet spot (between 3500-4500 rpm). It is very helpful when trying to pass or to keep momentum coming out of a corner. I'm no speedster, the car is just really underpowered. My wife's car also has a "manual" mode, but since it's a V6 with plenty of torque, I don't ever use it.
Loved this style of review too! Can you please review a 2016 VW GTI? At the price points you mention, it's a direct competitor and I think it brings a lot more to the table than the 3. Would love to hear your though on it!
Hey Dave, what is the 0-60 ??
I had paddle shifters on my Audi A1 back in Mexico City. Really nice feature when I was driving on highway, specially using the sport transmission. However, gears would shift automatically sometimes, and this made the paddles less fun.
good review can you review the new facelift version' of the mazda 3 cheers
Not fair. I purchased my 2015 Mazda 3 S GT brand new (400 miles) last august and my sticker said it was equipped with a rear spoiler...only, THIS car (in the review) looks to have an actual REAR spoiler. Should I go to the dealership about this (almost a year later)? Oh and to answer your question - - I use Sport mode and paddle shifters when I’m really wanting to scoot around town and drive spiritedly. You don’t have any power in the car unless you’re in the ‘right gear’ and ‘right RPM range’.
Thanks for all the great video reviews. I was considering the Mazda 3 last year but decided to hold off a bit more and explore other options because many reviews state the Mazda 3 suffers from road and wind noise while driving. I would really like to know how you would compare this years model to the previous 2015 model, any improvements or changes?
+egcruzer I was considering the 2016 Mazda 6 but decided that the road and wind noise issues along with the interior redesign issues made me want to look elsewhere. I was also considering the Sonata, Camry and Accord but now, the new redesigned Civic with the turbo might be what I want, esp. since I do not need a big car since I drive 99.9% of the time alone.
Thanks for the feedback Doug, I really wanted to like the Mazda 3 but I couldn't get over the interior styling especially the navigation system which makes me think someone though Supergluing an iPad to the dash was a great idea. now i'm considering the Sonata because of the EV model but also because i'm a fan of the interior and their choice to go more old fashioned with real buttons instead of pushing towards touch screen controls like some of the other manufacturers. I hope to check out the Civic at this years LA auto show in a couple of weeks. the double dash on previous models always made me cringe. I struggle with making the choice between something compact like a civic which would suit me now or something larger like a sonata which would be great down the road when I have a family.
totally thought your dog was about to walk off a cliff at the end of the vid. lol PHEW!
Love this review thanks
very nice review. This is what's wrong with the car.
1.) That parking brake has to go, put the electronic one on the cx5 it will save so much space.
2.) better wheels
now space wise is it the same as the Mazda cx5
It appears as the cargo door provides 'Maximus' protection!
Great review
I like the paddle shifters. I am honestly not that great with driving manual (I can it’s just jerky) but I feel like the paddle shifters give you a better sporty driving feel. My mom has them in her 2014 Acura MDX and I use them a lot. I really like the 2018 Mazda 3 I took a brief test drive at a car show and fell in love with it.
I never use the manual mode or paddle shifters on my car. They were a bit fun when I first got it, but now I just put it in drive.
I used to use manual shifting in 2006 Volkswagen Passat on icy winter roads with summer tires.
Scion IA or Mazda 3?
I've owned mazdas for years and I find the 2.0 manual a blast to drive and average 34 mpg and i run it hard. Two things that really get on my nerves are the infotainment center and it's hate of iPhone. And the locations of the cup holders. I've pushed straws threw my cup for using command center and for shifting.
just got the mazda3 2016 after your video
Just picked up my 2016 Mazda3 S GT Sedan this weekend. I noticed the Bose front door speakers seem to be a bit low. Sounds like most of the sound comes from that middle speaker. Anyone else notice this? I read some comment that they're more subs than actual speakers.
I am having the same problem but I realized that the problem is from the music... I tried different musics and the sound quality was different. You can try to turn off the center point to make it louder
+Nguyen Trung I actually had found a diagram of the speakers and it's a sub on the 2 front doors. I found the same thing, certain music sounds different. Sometimes low volume it sounds like everything is coming from the front speakers, but when you turn it up you don't notice at all and it sounds great.
Dave, to answer the question you asked in your video: I use the paddle shifters on my car fairly often when driving in city traffic because I don't like the shift points programmed into my car's TCU. It's too prone to holding a higher gear than I'd like at speeds under 40mph or so, causing the exhaust to drone. Also, I will sometimes use the paddles to upshift on full throttle instead of waiting for the computer to run it all the way out to redline because the engine loses steam about 500rpm short of redline.
What's more, I use them to downshift when coming to a stop to prolong brake life. It's worth mentioning that my car has a DCT instead of a conventional torque-converter automatic, so it engine-brakes like a traditional manual when you're off throttle instead of coasting. I haven't tried driving a conventional auto with paddle shifters yet; maybe my answer would be different if my car had one of those instead of a DCT.
Oh yeah, and what's with the house upgrade? Planning to add a family member or two in the near future? ;)
+DroverChicago thank you.. good to know.
The only thing I don't like about my 2016 Mazda 3 is the bluetooth music from my phone to my car will 80% of the time forget where it was or what song it was on or remember it but be frozen until I select the song again. I have a Samsung Galaxy S6, if anyone has seen this issue and found a way to resolve it please let me know.
+Khaltazar I use spotify and can confirm it does this, but what I do is re-open the app on my phone and it will re-sync and go back to normal.
nice hat! great review
Look at that big woofer. Absolute unit
This car is pretty impressive. I like the hatchback almost wagon look and the fairly powerful motor for this class. I mean it is not a sport compact or anything. I'd get a true manual though. I think if you want to shift your own gears, three pedaling is the only way. If I get an auto, I want it to do all the work.
Shifting gears are for real car guys
Automatic is just what the Mazda manufacturer gave him.
+Huey Camus yeah, not so much for weather anchors such as this bloke ;)
It's 2016 you dinosaur. When autos shift quicker and are quicker than manuals, why would you buy a manual? To change your own gears because you are on a racetrack right? Hey buddy, people in the real world drive cars in stop-start traffic and the roads are only getting busier. Manuals are redundant.
Supercar Club Wrong, a real car guy is someone who loves every car no matter what, I don't care if it is automatic or manual, I love all cars for what they are, also driving manual doesn't make you a “real car guy" or any better than someone who drives automatic transmissions, a real car guy have respect for others and their decisions, also you sound like a douchbag by the way!
LA of LA Do you even have a car?
Manual gearbox, all day.
I think most cars nowadays come with that auto-manual feature and I use mine often, as I do find it more engaging when I'm doing spirited runs.
You have an incredible voice.
Have you ever considered doing a vlogging channel
Recently bought this car.... love it
I wish u went over the media. Like the dial and the screen
if I have have to get a car in automatic, I NEED the select shift capability
Dave, what's your connection to the old english "D"! You're a long way from Hockeytown.
Once you get a chance to review the 2016 Honda Civic, I'd love to see your opinions comparing it to the Mazda3 since I've read that the Civic may dethrone the Mazda3 as the compact king.
***** Ok, I guess I didn't read that, you're right. :P

I'm debating which one to get. So far the civic has the upper hand because it comes with a Siri button and apple car play. Mazda is a hatchback though so more room for stuff. It's also a bit cheaper fully loaded I think.
+Thundernoob88 yea they're both great. I don't think the Civic Touring is worth the price since it's the same as the EX-L except for rain sensing wipers, rear heated seats, led headlights, and power passenger seat. none are important. if you don't care about leather or power driver seat (since who changes seating positions more than the first time?), then EX-T is the best value and much cheaper. Mazda3 gets expensive quick especially if you want the fancy tech that Honda offers on any trim for $1000.
The 3 will be refreshed in '17 so you're better off waiting until it's released. For me, no CarPlay and that hideous leather e-brake boot are dealbreakers. Judging by what they did to the 6, the latter will be addressed with an electronic e-brake. They'll probably clean up the dash as an added bonus. Might be SOL with CarPlay though.
I pick one up this friday
wait, what? What do you need heated side mirrors for??!
In Minnesota where youre mirrors freeze and you gotta scrape off the ice and tilt your mirror out of position.
Please do a review of the 2016 Honda Civic! I'm really interested on your opinion of the new 10th gen Civic.
On my mazda3 I like the manual Auto when in heavy traffic so you can stay in low gear so you are not always on the brakes in stop and go traffic
my friend has one. we had to have 3 people in the back. we are all like 6.1. not so great haha
The only time I'd use paddle shifters (or manual) in an auto is if the kick down tended to suck and I needed to overtake going up a hill and I didn't have 10 seconds to wait for the car to do it for me (seriously, there are some cars out there that are terrible like that).
You didn't say anything about what it's like to drive so I don't know if paddle shifters are just a pose here.
+lapamful That's exclusively when I use it, all the time in my '12 Maz3, going uphill. The auto just does not want to downshift from 5th and it's like running in a pool, move it down to 4th and zoom zoom, up the hill. I use it every day.
LOL at the automatic shifter trying to look like a manual.
I have a 2007 saab sport combi and never use the paddle shifters
Hey there , I need a little help ! I'm looking for a used small or medium sized sedan that feels/looks upscale as a first car ( No Audi , M-B , BMW, Cadillac because I'm a young new driver & insurance + maintenance costs are too high ). I want a manual transmission & needs to be fun to drive . My budget is 20k, want decant fuel efficiency (18 mpg city minimum) & looking for 2007+ models . Can someone recommend me some vehicles? Thank you very much ! :)
+Kevin Medeiros With 20k I'm sure you can find something decent with all you're looking for. Specifically there are many choices so can't really just suggest one.
My advice would be a saturn astra xr with the 5-spd. Extremely well built, good looking european hatch that is also really fun to drive, confortable, safe and practical. They can be hard to find, but its definitely worth looking at. They are excellent german engineered hatchbacks that wont break the bank and look really good.
+Kevin Medeiros fun to drive?
IN THE HOLLYWOOD HILLS
But a new car that is fuel efficient
Don't worry about upscale for a first car..
At 20K the civic/Mazda 3/ etc is all in play.
Worry about upscale on the next purchase.
***** I unsderstand that the Civic , Mazda 3, Scion TC , etc . Are great cars, but I personnaly just find that they represent pubersant teenage boy .. In my everyday life , I work in suit & have always lived with older people than me ( rare was the time spent with friends of my age, sadly ) . Now that being said , I need a car that represent more "maturity" if I may say . I looked into the 07-08 Acura TL , 09-12 Acura TSX , 12 Regal GS , 13-15 Mazda 6 touring . Any advice/opinions on these vehicles ? Thanks :)
Congrats............
they should fix the + and - in Manual mode, its very confusing win the positive sign is below and the negative sign is above
Romel Jacob Just get a standard.
If you have a car like this, trust me it feels better to have it set up like that. My mom's suv has it set up how you want it and it just feels awkward.
the best reviewer !
+Aldin Ibrahimovic That's nice of you to say, thank you - Dave, Everyman Driver
I guess the look of this car grew on you over the last 2 years since you reviewed the 2014 version. :)
this > honda civic 2016
So this is a focus with a Mazda badge. I guessing they don't offer it as a three door?
All Mazda. Ford sold all their shares before Mazda redisigned all their cars to their new kodo design language. Internal parts are made by Mazda too.
Mazda have nothing to do with Ford anymore. That's why Mazda now are the number 1 Japanese brand.
says he doesn't feel like he's in a sports lol yet haven't tried the Manuel or sport setting within 100miles,? probably hasn't even reved higher then 6K
Nice car and options but over 30k for mazda 3s?... Idk about that. I liked your review though.
+CDXXIX yeah but you know nobody wants to spend 30k for a Corolla even with all those options. you can get a wrx with nice options with that money.
Washington state looks really pretty.
1:44 here, fun to drive- IN THE HOLLYWOOD HILLS
Mullhulland HWY.😉
Being a Mazda lover, and past owner of 5 Mazdas so far, I test drove a Mazda 3 hatchback in dark blue. I hate to say it but I was underwhelmed. Maybe due to all the hype I was a bit let down. I didnt purchase it.
Awwww, Maximus is so adorable.
Cute dogs and awsome car.
paddle shifters and also the automatic opening rear hatch are something you probably use once to show off to your friends and that's it. useless options to me at least
should have done a 0 to 60
Wow! 185hp and 30mpg! That's really good! Probably geared for fuel economy with the auto. Wonder what the stick would be like.
Great 'shooting brake' styling too! Don't think Mazda needs to worry about the new Civic very much. My guess: Mazda will come out with a '17 model refresh with matching technology.
+beefeater777 You are right, Mazda doesn't need to worry about the Civic. IMO it is better than the new Civic. The manual is excellent.
This gen MZ3 is geared tall (short numerically) with long legs. If it follows Mazda form, the manual transmission version will have a shorter (higher numerical) final drive ratio.
No. Paddle shifters are a novelty at best. We're all going to be laughing about them ten years from now.
The manual shifting, either by the shift knob or paddles, is only attractive on actual sports cars, like BMW's, Cadillac, Lexus, ect. On an economy car like a Mazda? No thank you.
white seats are nasty if you wear blue jeans. Keep that in mind!!!
thats a price for a WRX.
nice dogs
until maximus isn't.
I think three syllables is too many for a dog name.
I need to move :(
I saw his face all time, i came here because i wanted see the car no his face.
The mazda 3 5-door has 155 hp and 150 lb-ft. of torque not 184 hp 185 lb-ft.
+jester1390 I was wrong. Those lower numbers are for the 2.0L not the 2.5L engine
Automatic? Where's your purse?
+Angel Vega Did you mean to write, where's your purse?
+Everyman Driver What's yo ass talking 'bout tho? I ain't fucking witcha.
what do you expect as an answer, your are a weird rude person and by the way you talk, we'll, write says a lot about you.
David Zavala Because I was serious, come on have some sense of humor. Oh "we'll", whatever
Really Everyman Driver? No manual for you? Nothing beats a stick shift.
+Native722 He can only review what comes to him from the press fleets. He can't review what he doesn't get.
Do you have a manual you can loan him for review?
DroverChicago What I meant was, he stated something a long the lines of a manual wasn't for him or something like that and I wasn't complaining about him not having a manual to review but thank you for replying.
nothing new over the 2014 model. disappointed
Lol you buy toilet paper!? Ha! I don't poop. Putin don't poop.
2016 Mazda3 dropped the ball. this car suck!! its outdated
