- Glow Plugs and Cold Weather.
With a - 2'C,morning here in Berrima its perfect conditions for checking up on cold start up issues with Diesels. This Rig has been into us over the years and it looks like this Winter we will have to do the glow plugs.
Check out this video to see what a cold start up issue looks like.

My Mitsi 4M40's did the same thing after 150 km's or so. Tried after market glow plugs- didn't last five minutes. Genuine Mitsi ones at twice the price- good for another 150 km's. Changed the whole set- if one had gone the rest wouldn't be far off. Added a mitsi turbo to one of them too- best thing I ever did, made it fun to drive. Enjoy your videos- thanks for going to the trouble.
You're a wizard Andrew
THANK YOU FOR DETAIL VIDEO
great videos thank you
Great information, thank you. Helps a lot. We've had a run of bad luck with our cars lately, so genuine no nonsense information really helps 👍
One question, the engine on my van has sat for a while due to ill health. I've bypassed the fuel tank, changed the oil filter - empty and dry, the alternator charges, the glow plugs are suspect. Its coming around, the engine idles after a hard start. It's one a two day start up and 5 min idle routine while we wait for inline filters. Inline fuel filters will be a temporary measure to cover any fuel tank issues when I check the radiator thermostat. Next jobs are glow plug, oil change, thermostat. Sound about right to you? Not looking for advice, but a thumbs up would help 🙂
👍
Cheers mate a great informative video.
I have a 94 HZJ 75 Cruiser ute (Genuine 155K and glow plugs) whereby the glow plug light periodically comes on while driving along the highway (becoming more frequent and for a longer duration in recent months) Light initially goes off upon start-up (motor starts without any hesitation) but 10 to 15mins down the road, the light starts flickering and then stays on for longer periods and often fades off & back on again for the duration of the journey. Any suggestions, faulty glow plug relay or other?
Thank you
How can anybody give this channel a thumbs down, I know it's the know all's, sound advice from this Bloke.
Hahaha ah yes theres a World of unhappy people about... all watching our channels intently :-)
Can this sometimes also be leaky injectors if so how do you test for leaky injectors?
Great insight
Cheers
Great vid mate. Thanks

Youre Welcome
Just found this channel
My 2006 bravo 2.5 turbo has stopped starting when been sitting for 5 or 6 hours or overnight. It runs beautiful once I give a quick spray of start ya basted or even if it's been warmed up it will start easy for the next few hours.
Any tips on what may be the problem would be much appreciated. Thank you.
Check your glow plug relay, sounds like none of the plugs are working
Question for you or anyone, I have a diesel truck and everything is pretty good on it but it's starting to get cold out and after I wait the four seconds and try to start it, it won't start and I have to try again until it behaves and starts. My question is if I wait longer than 4 seconds like 14 seconds will that actually help with starting or does everything stop after 4 seconds or should I wait 4 seconds and then take the keys out then do it again for another 4 seconds and then try to start it??
Bro just try it for yourself glow plugs stay on even after light goes out at Least in older diesels not sure about new ones
Very helpful also had no idea it got cold in oz ha
Global warming 😂😂😂
Of course it does lol. Just regular snow is mainly in mountain areas.
Hi mate , where are the updates for this cold start up patrol , I’d like to know if it was fixed and what the problem was as I have the identical same patrol same problem .
Thanks
How did you go fadi? I'm having the issue now to
I've got the 4.2D GQ, and it does exactly the same thing. After about a minute, the smoke stops and it's all good. Tested the glow plugs, all 1.7ohm. Took the glow plugs out and bench tested them. They all took around 5sec before the tip started to glow, and around 15sec before the glow plug had half the tip lit up.
Ever figure this out mate? I'm in the same boat.
@@saladin7467 I've replaced the glow plugs, injectors, fuel lines, had the injector pump rebuilt (separate issue) but still smokes unfortunately.
@@Genxr66 i have the same problem, I just on Facebook that there is a little sensor on the intake manifold that could be the problem or it could be my valve stem seals on my td however my td got rebuilt not long ago
How is it me 02 Pajero 3.2DID starts straight away without warming glow plugs on a minus 6 morning with 400,000+ kms on the clock? I never wait for glow plugs but on my old Mitsubishi Challenger 2.8 I would have to warm the plugs twice before it would start? Battery difference?
Direct Injection Vs Indirect injection
Berrima beat me to it haha. Due to their combustion method IDIs (Indirect injection) just hate the cold
My mazda 1998 b2500 diesel 2.5 wl engine 275k km does the sameee in cold start ups, mine just stalls if i dont keep the rpms above 1k manually, how you fixed that truck?
inexpensive things to change fuel filter and glowplug, change that and try.
I hope it not the frist set. As I have seen the end fall off or blow off old plugs before and things go realy bad from then on in
My freelander 1 56 plate td4 m47 engine does this exact thing! Nit very cold weather but when the engine is cold from being stood over night! Lumpy idemle fot 5 seconds and smoke, when warm no smoke and idles perfect
Exact same symptoms on 1.6 HDI engine
@@Mr330d I'm thinking maybe 1 injector leaking and excess fuel is making it lumpy until it all burns in chamber
@@sheffielduk3428 mine is on the first start of the day lumpy idle for around 5 seconds then fine and the rest of the day starts perfectly
Very informative content...just wanted to ask....can I use 15w40 in toyota 2GD-FTV Engine ? It's fitted with a dpf.
Yep you hould be able to find a good 10W40 or 15W40
Cheers
@@BerrimaDiesel thanks👍
Regards
if you can help!, i have a y60 2.8td 92', but it have hard starts, i have changed the glow plugs and battery, but as soon as i start ignition the glow sign go away and i have to wait fort the second click on relay (12-13sec) to have a good start. do you have any idea whats wrong? thanks
Genuine Glow Plugs? See so many problems with after market
Mine does the exact same thing, just replaced all glow plugs.. I noticed the grounding point for the plugs is a bit rusted, could this cause resistance and not allow them to reach full burn??
maybe......
@@BerrimaDiesel Thanks for the reply mate, I ruled out the glow plugs. I'm running some injector cleaner hoping that fixes the issue. I've tried about everything else.
I don't have starting issues, it starts straight away, but if I'm parked on a hill waiting for traffic/off-road. It's sounds just like that, I pull over on flat ground turn it off turn it on again it's gone, till the next hill. What could that be?
Air in system possibly
@@BerrimaDiesel haven't been able to look at it, because every time I open the bonnet starts to rain. But finally did get a chance, changed the fuel filter "I do it regularly so didn't think it was that" but it seemed to work.
Cheers
👍
Can bad glow cause engine shaking? Vibrations?
Yes engine won’t be burning cleanly
Cheers 🍻 Professor Confessor for the Familiaré 🎵🦘 ⚙️ 😉🖖🏼 3:03
Are you using 15W40 engine oil at this weather conditions with no issues? Thanks
Yep. Remember a 15 oil is good for -15 :-)
@@BerrimaDiesel What??????? A15W40 OIL is better for extram cold starting ?
@@fadiamine2503 He didn't say better, he just said good for -15. Will not be effected by temp until then pretty much. These older cars with high KLMs won't get any favours with real thin oil.
My 1hz smokes like this while turning over takes for ever to start
I'm thinking my glow plugs relay is blown
Maybe
Question, why do manufactories Vehicle / Recommend this light 5w30 oils/ sewing machine oil?
Australiia IS NOT North America/Europe 😁
@@BerrimaDiesel I'm aware we don't have cold weather, but why do they still reco this watery grade, it must boil quickly and course unfathomable internal damage
Probablly shwos us how insignificaant the main manufacturers think we are.
So in our Climate we locally recommend the SAE guide which would concur a 40 weight at least.
Did not know you get frost in Australia
✔️
Am i the only one thinking how can it be so cold and hard ice when you seem to wear very thin layers , open collar shirt, think overalls, no condensation from your breath, looks like you just got that cat out of a deep freezer and yet surprisingly it started kind of OK within a few cranks, can't see it has any glow plug issues. and you would expect it to run a little rough at first on extremely cold mornings.
It be about 2dgrees,the glows are out, mine did the same, glowplugs wear out..
Hi i have a 2010 nissian Qashqai and when i start from cold i get a small bit of smoke but when i stsrt again noting what could it be
I have a 2010 qashqai and have the same issue.
King Sanj how bad is your smoke diesel
Mine does this at traffic lights Even when warm
Your timing may be out.
That's exactly what my tritons doing once it's warm it's all good
what was the problem
My td42 is an absolute bitch to start no where near that cold it was factory non turbo and had a factory turbo fitted running factory boost it is a bitch to start
Fordkpri
That is absolutely not just a glow plug issue.
It quite likely is. IDI diesels really hate the cold as a normal, bad plugs makes for a smoke show
i have a 4.2tdi,mwm,no glow plugs,starts first time everytime,streight away,no wait,its a diesel.starts on compression,not glow plugs,3" system std,ohc std,3 valves std,all mechanical,no computor,7.3 intercooler std.tdho,6 turbo.165kw,680nm.cant beat german tech.11lt 100.
harry walker learn how to put a sentence together. No glow plugs? Manufactured in Brazil.
might be made in brazil but its basicaly a german tractor engine.mwm is one of the biggest plant manufacturer in europe/world.if nissan or toyota made a decent engine with power, std,& a decent sized truck.not car sized,i might buy one.i hate having to buy mini everything when owning a nissan or toyota,no fkng room.i see all the head aches they have in the club to make things fit.bit like transformers.might buy a tundra,or tacoma, may be.real sized truck.,mate i knew when we were living up the gulf, carpenteria, had an inter scout,345ci,then a nissan g60,they both got stuck in places i didnt, why, too short wheel base..plus,if i cant fit 35" tires, std, with no mods to truck, wont buy it.hummers are crap.give me a german unimog any day...look up y toob,"dirt every day".or petersons 4x4 adventures.brilliant show.
When the battery is good and engine has proper compression it should start without glow plugs. I have bmw diesel and with broken glow plugs controller last winter (not even 1 glow plug working) it would start at -15 with a lil bit wiggle like max 3 secodns and then run smoothly. But with replaced controller it just starts at 1touch :D
-2 celcius only? There is something wrong with that car, sorry. Diesel should burn with high pressure only. Tips from icy Finland: if the thermometer reads under -10'C and a cold start is forced (external heater recommended under -5) glow with key, but don't start yet. Turn off electricity after glow light turns off, and then glow again. Repeat until you think the piston-cylinder complex is warm enough. Start.
👍
Compression makes the air hot which combusts diesel, if the air is colder then it would be harder to start, simple maths. This in an old indirect injection car, coupled with how they probably mix fuel in Australia cause of the weather(maybe more paraffin wax good in hot temp frozen in cold temp), then it's gonna be hard even if it's just the glow plugs that aren't working.
