A cavalryman escorting Queen Elizabeth II and German President Roman Herzog to Windsor Castle was seriously hurt on Tuesday when he was thrown from his horse.
It was the first day of Herzog's four-day state visit to Britain.
At Windsor Castle, Herzog viewed a giant handmade gilded orb and cross created by British craftsmen for the people of Dresden.
German President Roman Herzog kicked off a four-day state visit at Windsor Castle on Tuesday.
But before he reached the gates of Windsor Castle, a cavalryman escorting the carriages was thrown from his horse when it reared.
The rider, who was wearing a heavy breastplate and armour fell on a sanded road in front of the queen's carriage.
He was taken to a local hospital with shoulder and spine injuries.
Herzog and his wife, Christiane, are the first to be entertained by Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle since fire ripped through it in 1992, destroying some of its historic sections.
The last state visit by a German president was in July 1986 by President Richard von Weizsacker.
The queen last paid a state visit to Germany in 1992.
Herzog viewed a giant handmade gilded orb and cross created by British craftsmen for the people of Dresden as a symbol of friendship and reconciliation over World War II.
The 18-foot (5.5- metre) orb and cross is a replica of the ornament that once graced the skyline of Dresden atop the Baroque Frauenkirche.
The original was destroyed when the church was reduced to rubble in a two-day Anglo-American bomb raid on the city during World War II.
The 1.5 ton copper and stainless steel creation was made by hand.
It was commissioned by the Dresden Trust, a group of people in Britain who raised around 300-thousand pounds (495-thousand U-S dollar) from individuals, charities and companies across the country.

As a remember from the news bulletins, the rider was discharged from hospital a few days later with soft tissue injuries to his back and a fractured collar bone. The horse was spooked by a camera flash from the crowd. The flash temporarily blinded the horse and it panicked.
Horses are flight animals, and will try to run if frightened. All credit to the mounted police officers who caught the animal before anyone else got hurt

No, so the horse won’t get hit by the car....that kind of car hit by a horse can be mended, but an out of control horse and rider who hit a car could be killed. The rider had serious shoulder and spine injuries from hitting the sand with a horse on top of him, but if they’d come down on the moving car, the injuries would very likely be much worse.

    • @sync7639
      @sync7639 Před 3 lety +3

@@voraciousreader3341 I agree, but in this situation where everything happens in seconds, the driver would've thought to speed up so that the horse wouldn't fall back to the car. Also, horses easily weigh about 900-2000 pounds, so if the horse would've fallen back to the car, there would have been some glass cracks of some sort(if the glass wasn't bulletproof, then it would most certainly break and possibly injure the VIPs in the car). It'd be still bad for both parties if the horse actually fell back on the car so kudos to the driver.

The same thing happen to my partner. Our horse was part Andalusian and did rear up alot but this time he kept coming and fell completely back with him still holding the reins and pommel of the saddle. Always said take both feet out of stirrups when dismounting but he was trying and still had left foot in. He broke his back but luckily was out of hospital in 11 days in a brace. Can happen anytime.
