"Peace for All Time": JFK's Historic 1963 Call for Peace Helped Lead to Nuke Treaty with Moscow

  • President John F. Kennedy's "peace speech" at American University 60 years ago was a searing critique of Cold War politics and laid out a hopeful vision for a world built on cooperation and empathy, even among rival countries. Kennedy called for "not merely peace for Americans, but peace for all men and women - not merely peace in our time, but peace for all time." We feature an extended excerpt of Kennedy's remarks and speak with The Nation publisher Katrina vanden Heuvel about how the speech remains relevant today. The Biden administration "could certainly take a page" from Kennedy's policies, she says, urging the U.S. to avoid needless escalation during this time of renewed hostility between the United States and Russia over the war in Ukraine.

Not "we" per se. The Western imperialist billionaire class is doing this Ukraine Russian war, the Neo-cons like Robert Kagan and Victoria Nuland and the folks at the "Second CIA" the National Endowment for Democracy which is anything but democratic. The modern Democratic Party is the current home of the neo-conservative war mongers, the ones who issued their white paper in year 2000 from the Project for the New American Century (PNAC) calling for a Pax Americana enforced upon the world with our superior military. They're the ones who some suspect were involved in the World Trade Center attacks, when they revealed their plans for this Pax Americana would not happen quickly without some "new Pearl Harbor" event to accelerate militarism.

But what if we judge John F. Kennedy by the lengthy record of his actual political career, in historical perspective? What if this hero of liberals was, in fact, the opposite of a liberal?
As Ira Stoll convincingly argues, by the standards of both his time and our own, John F. Kennedy was a conservative. His two great causes were anticommunism and economic growth. His tax cuts, which spurred one of the greatest economic booms in our history, were fiercely opposed by his more liberal advisers. He fought against unions. He pushed for free trade and a strong dollar. And above all, he pushed for a military buildup and an aggressive anticommunism around the world. Indeed, JFK had more in common with Ronald Reagan than with LBJ.
Not every Republican is a true heir to Kennedy, but hardly any Democrats deserve that mantle. JFK, Conservative is sure to appeal to conservative readers - and will force liberals to reconsider one of their icons"......from the book, JFK conservative by Ira Stoll

    • @practicaliching2311
      @practicaliching2311 Před 11 měsíci

John F. Kennedy had more in common with Ronald Reagan than the modern Democrat Party.
Now, JFK would like the opportunity to destroy your assertion in his own words.
"I’d be very happy to tell them I’m not a liberal at all…I’m not comfortable with those people." Saturday Evening Post, June 1953
"This administration intends to cut taxes in order to build the fundamental strength of our economy, to remove a serious barrier to long-term growth, to increase incentives by routing out inequities and complexities and to prevent the even greater budget deficit that a lagging economy would otherwise surely produce. The worst deficit comes from a recession, and if we can take the proper action in the proper time, this can be the most important step we could take to prevent another recession. That is the right kind of tax cut both for your family budget and the national budget…Every dollar released from taxation that is spent or invested will help create a new job and a new salary. And these new jobs and new salaries can create other jobs and other salaries and more customers and more growth for an expanding American economy." Radio and Television Report to the American People on the State of the National Economy, August 13, 1962
"Today, we need a nation of Minutemen, citizens who are not only prepared to take arms, but citizens who regard the preservation of freedom as the basic purpose of their daily life and who are willing to consciously work and sacrifice for that freedom."
"It is an unfortunate fact that we can secure peace only by preparing for war.” -John F. Kennedy
"It is increasingly clear that no matter what party is in power, so long as our national security needs keep rising, an economy hampered by restrictive tax rates will never produce enough jobs or enough profits."
"A tax cut means higher family income and higher business profits and a balanced federal budget."
"The American character has been not only religious, idealistic, and patriotic, but because of these it has been essentially individual." Independence Day Oration, July 4th, 1946
"Conceived in Grecian thought, strengthened by Christian morality, and stamped indelibly into American political philosophy, the right of the individual against the State is the keystone of our Constitution." Each man is free. Independence Day Oration, July 4th, 1946
"The ever expanding power of the federal government, the absorption of many of the functions that states and cities once considered to be responsibilities of their own, must now be a source of concern to all those who believe as did the great patriot, Henry Grattan that: “Control over local affairs is the essence of liberty.” Commencement Address, University of Notre Dame, January 29, 1950
"If it is in the public interest to maintain an industry, it is clearly not in the public interest by the impact of regulatory authority to destroy its otherwise viable way of life."

    • @practicaliching2311
      @practicaliching2311 Před 11 měsíci +10

Democrats are using nostop immigration year after year, high taxes, and over regulation to drive down wages at the bottom and increase housing prices at the same time. To the point tens of millions of people don't have any money left over at the end of the month. Which gives all the power to employers. And its the lack of power in the hands of employees that allows the excesses at the top, causing the wealth gap.
Compare that with the conservative model of using low taxes, less immigration, and less regulation to tighten up the labor market. Which raises wages, allows mobility, allows for advancement, allows people with lousy work records or low skills to get decent jobs, and gives people dignity. If people are capable of empathy and compassion and care about the little guy, they are Kennedy/Reagan conservatives.
"You can’t be for big government, big taxes and big bureaucracy and still be for the little guy.”.......Ronald Reagan
"The ever expanding power of the federal government, the absorption of many of the functions that states and cities once considered to be responsibilities of their own, must now be a source of concern to all those who believe as did the great patriot, Henry Grattan that: “Control over local affairs is the essence of liberty.” Commencement Address, University of Notre Dame, January 29, 1950.....John F.Kennedy

Not worried about any coming civil war because I know the weaknesses of these bigots from the Vietnam War. They will lose...again. During Kennedy's time most of the people in the country loved him and a few uncivilized ridge runners didn't like him. They could get factory jobs but no important positions without a background of education unlike today. Hence, they are CEOs, senators, congressmen, and corporate people running business into the ground playing redneck justice games they learned from local small time politicians. Thanks, Democracy Now, and to Katrina van den Heuvel. When Jack Kennedy gave his Peace Speech, I was in sixth grade, a recently naturalized immigrant child from the ruins of Postwar Germany. General Ike had warned us about the Military-Industrial Complex, Khrushchev had pounded the UN-podium with his shoe, the Cuba Missile Crisis, and the Bay of Pigs Debacle were fresh memories. I remember how much that speech lifted the hearts of our parents, so deeply worried at the height of the Cold War and Nuclear Arms Race.

President Putin was forced to engage in this war by the efforts of the American and Zionist neo-conservatives, the folks at the "Second CIA" the National Endowment for Democracy, folks like Robert Kagan and Victoria Nuland. The misnamed agency goes around the world overthrowing governments the billionaire class dislikes. (It was founded by Allen Weinstein under authorization from Reagan. The founder boasted that the NED does openly what the CIA did clandestinely!) 30 years ago the Russians told William Colby of the CIA that Ukraine was their "red line". If we tried to take Ukraine and put NATO in it, they would go to war to stop that. It is an existential military threat to Russia. They and Putin are simply doing what they said they would do if western imperialists moved into Ukraine. JFK was antithetically opposed to the future Neo-conservatives.

Conservatives understand John F. Kennedy way more than liberals do. John F. Kennedy had way more in common with Ronald Reagan than with the modern Democrat Party.
"I’d be very happy to tell them I’m not a liberal at all…I’m not comfortable with those people." John F Kennedy Saturday Evening Post, June 1953

This speech was on the 10th of June 1963; JFK was assassinated 6 months later (22 Nov 1963). Only ten or so days before he was killed JFK approved plans for the ongoing covert military assault of Cuba in Project Mongoose.
On the 8th of March and the 7th of October 1963 JFK also made plans for the overthrow of the democratic government of the President of Brazil, Joao Goulart. * LBJ followed through with JFK plans. This resulted in a military dictatorship in Brazil that lasted until 1980s.
Because JFK sent special forces to Vietnam, already by the end of 1962 fifty Americans had died in Vietnam.
Like Obama, presidents can make wonderful speeches, but it hardly defines who they are.

That's a very fitting reminder, 60 years later and the inability of the US to find a common ground with Russia is continuing to threaten the stability of the world. I am also reminded of the short period between that speech and the execution of that same man, and it could be said they may have been the words that sealed his fate in the eyes of the warmongers who plotted his end. My opinion would be that if you consider the timeline of Putin as leader of Russia you will see that he offered openness and friendship to "the west" as late as 2012 but was neither fully accepted nor treated with the equality and respect he expected for his country. What has happened since 2014, and the continued conflict in Ukraine as well as Russia becoming involved with conflicts such as in Syria and Chad are because they have been pushed to it by the ignorance and imperialist nature of the US and it's allies.

At the time of President Kennedy's assassination, he had a representative - the French journalist Jean Daniel -- in Cuba, meeting directly with Fidel Castro. This was done through back channels, as a way of re-establishing diplomatic relations between Havana and Washington. Sadly, once Castro learned of Kennedy's death, this back channel was ended by President Kennedy's successor, Lyndon Johnson. Furthermore, President Kennedy was beginning to withdraw U.S. military advisors from South Vietnam during the latter part of 1963.

Except Obama truly was a conservative. The ACA was actually the privatization of Medicaid not any "government takeover of healthcare". He never held Bush et al accountable for any warcrimes, he actually backstabbed the Occupy Movement while publicly claiming to be on their side. He never closed Guantanamo. He never passed EFCA even though that was one of his central campaign promises, etc. etc. Life in black ghettoes actually worsened under Obama's tenure. He talked a good talk but the walk wasn't there. Obama was a Neo-conservative wet dream.

I recall an interview with JFK's speechwriter Ted Sorenson. Sorenson was a learned and principled man by all accounts. His wordsmithing was sublime. And Kennedy was an effective speaker. There's something very rare and beautiful about a Kennedy speech. Much credit to Sorenson, and Kennedy, who I'm sure added his own touches...

It's been very sad to see DemocracyNow supporting the USA's proxy war with Russia. The biggest propaganda campaign ever - much like the one that pushed the good German people to get behind Hitler & his madness. The MSM bombed us with BS before we recovered from the shock of Covid. Naomi Klein made some very good, relevant points in "The Shock Doctrine".

If JFK had lived to our present day, things would be so different. I believe we would now be more progressive and more enlightened. Big business, big war never wanted him. That is why he was shot. At least that is how I see it.
