I just wanted to thank you for posting these videos. I have been playing for a long time but watching you breaking these tunes really really is a big help. Thank you.
awsome, LOVE it very much. I am new to violin since Oct 2017. Learned all scales from you. Now, I could use these scales to fiddle. THANKS a big bunch.
In beginning Suzuki terms this is "down-berry, up berry", one of the first bowing patterns the 3 and 4 year old kids learn! Others are caterpillar, ice-cream cone, pineapple (triplets). You do a great job explaining this.
I like the way you explain this. I do the same bowing but never thought of it as being the same as the shuffle. When I teach the shuffle I call it (Up Doggy Down Doggy) or the reverse if you want the student to bow down first. It explains the rhythm and also bow direction. I will try this technique of slurring with the shuffle with some students.
A very, very helpful lesson. Been tired of classical things and need somthing fresh, and I found this video on CZcams. Soooo glad! Maybe by mastering these I'll be able to master Czardas ^_^
Hi John, I have always wanted to play a scale like you do in this video, and I will get it eventually, but would like to have the sheet music as backup, and use it with your video. Learning such wonderful exercises will surely make your children great fiddlers, and improvisers. Thanks for putting that out, and i'm so grateful I found it!
Living the dream in Arizona. Good to cyber-see you. I need to take my family to Boone. We will definitely look you up when we can make the trip. Hope you are well dude.
John - useful! Heard an interesting fiddle style from a group in the north of England reconstructing English 18thC fiddle style using bow markings on old manuscripts. The fast shuffle with 2 notes on the long bow was very widely used and helps make sense of a lot of the old tunes. Google for "Village Music Project Lecture Sidmouth" & you should find a lecture by Paul Roberts. Sounds great, & probably as close as you can get to the origins of the US Old Time style. Now to learn it!
That's really the difficult part that I've never been able to do: Synchronizing both hands while speeding, how to do it? please JK some tricks about that too.
You should do a video strictly on posture....that affects sound too and endurance...I often find myself leaning towards one direction and that affects the diaphragm like leaning forward too...
The best shuffle bowing of fast songs example known to man. I wish I had seen this 20 years ago.

What is that metal thing you have attached to your fiddle?
Can you do a demonstration of a Georgia shuffle?
and what do old time fiddlers use.
Can you also show how the Georgia shuffle is done ?
OOOhhhhhh! :-)
