    I moved from the USA at 79 to Queretaro, Mexico on 11-2-2021, due to the deadly crimes and the expensive rents, utilities, food etc. I am on a pension, so I could not afford to stay n the USA, where I was born and raised. My pension goes farther here in Mexico. The city is safe, clean and beautiful.

    Be careful promoting Tulum as a retirement or residential town. The town is essentially sitting on an underground river and caves, and has had an explosion of development without much infrastructure to keep up with the growth. Cenotes were once intact; are now getting polluted. I hate it when we ruin such a good thing.

      It's bad what's happening in Tulum. It makes me think of the USA and how the people of England bowled over the land, decimated the Indians and the animals to extinction while proclaiming Manifest Destiny. As a child I learned in school that the indigenous people were 'savages' 'ignorant' and they were disgusting while 'we' were superior and needed to teach them. I used to think, Well, if strangers came to your land, lied to you, broke agreements and decimated the beavers, buffalos and forced you out wouldn't you BE SAVAGE to protect your life?

    • @NormaVV
      @NormaVV Před 3 lety +6

      @@kirstenvogel9620 Yeah, there’s always a sense of entitlement in these situations. Even early Disney films used the stereotype referring to natives. Presently, it’s thinly veiled as an “eco retreat”. But the waste generated is piling on a pristine jungle.
      I too blame government leadership for corrupting the place. But yes, AMLO is touting the Mayan train into the area is super modern, will certainly attract more visitors, …along with more EDM parties, of course. Meanwhile, mostly every hotel there is still off the grid and runs on diesel generators. As someone previously mentioned, it needs to be declared a protected biosphere.

These figures are based upon the past 18 mos in the U.S. with adjustments for Mazatlan. I'm a bean counter so I hope it's fairly correct. I just came back from a 6 week stay in Playa del Carmen, actually Playacar. I have travelled extensively throughout the world so I believe my opinion should count. The good points are : Playacar ,NOT Playa del Carmen, is quiet and safe. It has good infrastructure and you get the feeling that you are one with nature despite all the new resorts rising up there .While we were there ,we read about gang related killings in Playa and nearby Cancun but Playacar had none of that.
    Another good point is that Cancun Airport, a very efficient airport ,is a 45 minute ride.
    People are generally friendly despite the harsh reality they have to live in .
    The beach is very nice when there are no seaweeds making it absolutely disgusting.
    Accommodation is generally pretty good .
    However ,there are also some very disturbing points.One of them is that you can't find a grocery store anywhere unless you go to the big mall of Chedraui or Walmart. There are countless drugstores( and I realize why) but not a greengrocer's anywhere in sight .
    Prices are EXORBITANT. I really can't understand how a poor Mexican living paycheck to paycheck can afford to live there. Of course when you have different prices for tourists from those of the locals you can understand what's going on. My partner had an ear infection and we went to a high-end clinic where they asked $489 for a simple consultation!!!! Of course they got nothing .
    One other thing is the near harassment by merchants on Avenida 5. You walk past and they keep pestering you to buy something. Overall a nice place to visit but most definitely not to retire there ( and I should know because I had considered doing that but Covid-19 put an end to that ).

Since then, hearing horror stories about violence everywhere, and governments around the world saying Mexico is a hot spot, I decided that I will take my vacations elsewhere. Maybe I'm a bit ignorant about Mexico's status, but, I found other treasures throughout the Americas. I hope that someday, I can return when the government has a handle on its violence. Love Mexico and have traveled throughout, however there is the corruption and cartel. I was dining at a very popular beautiful steakhouse in a very upscale area of Guadalajara. In walks 4 really bad dudes openly carrying machine guns they sat next to our table and they had back ups with more guns at every entrance into the restaurant. It was a very unnerving situation, as we rushed to get our check and get out of there. They had lots of tear drop tattoos. Mexico has this issue that cannot be ignored.
