I know this is a George Best video, but can we take a minute to admire Bobby Charlton's passing and game control?
And videos like this are useful because they show the average person that even the greatest players like George Best and Ronaldo lost the ball all the time just like us. The difference is that they had moments of absolute genius which set them apart from the rest of us.

Spot on. And did you notice how many times Charlton passed to Best? Almost every chance he could, as he knew Georgie was match winner- and people used to say they didn't get on.

@@mikebentley5892I think they were fine on the pitch but their lifestyles were completely different off the pitch.

Bobby was a midfield general spreading the play letting a young Best try and express himself.

Best is less than ordinary here. Charlton is in a differnet league.

George was never ordinary. He was gifted, and would occupy many defenders, whilst other team mates would enjoy less attention and more space. George Best was brilliant.

Tavy@ i had no idea how bad george best was before all the glamour and glitter stuff of 1967. He was really bad on this day again. It got to the stage he couldnt even beat himself as the commentater said. But commentaters were easily pleased back in those days. If you made a 7ft pass to a man you were a great player in those days lol. But i learned as i got older commentaters were told to make average players sound great players and great players to be the best in the world. As here its plain to see best was just an average player for 3 to 4 years. If it hadnt of been for matt busbys fondness of george a believe he might have struggled to even get a game and maybe ended up at chelsea, liverpool, or brighton lol best wouldnt get away with that today for 4 years they would of had him on his bike. But come 1966 to 1972 he was the greatest in the world! easy!!!!!

alan mctavish I made a similar comment to yours on his 1964 match against Tottenham. His game was clearly " raw" before 1967. Numerous misplaced passes & dribbling into cul de sacs. Come 1967 & his game shot up to a world class level.
Pelé & Maradona were scary, polished world class brutal players at 17 years old ( Pelé ) 18 years old ( Maradona).
Best didn't become a polished, brutal world class player, until he was around 21 years old. He had about a good four, five years as a superstar elite player & then his game completely fell of the handle.
That can't compare to the 12 to 14 years, superstar elite levels, Di Stéfano, Pelé, Beckenbauer, Cruyff, Zico, Maradona, C.Ronaldo, Messi, played at.

Agree with these comments, he was jealous of Gerd Muller when he signed for Fort Lauderdale Strikers in the USA. Im too young to have seen him play but I have relatives who saw him on a number of occasions and they say Jimmy Greaves, Charlie Cooke of Chelsea and Terry Hibbit and especially Colin Bell were far superior. Although he was a skilled player he would often run into no man's land with no options because he had ignored chances to play good players through on goal, they said if he came up against decent defenders like Bobby Moore, Tommy Smith, Reaney, Voghts, Beckenbauer, and midfielders they would have him in their back pockets all match such as Colin Bell, an uncle remembers a game between Manchester United and Newcastle where he ran after a long ball but and Malcolm Macdonald beat him to it from the other end of the pitch as if he did it because it was George Best. They also said Jimmy Greaves couldn't be left unmarked for a second and he was a goal machine. From all I've seen of him he was a good player but I don't think he was ever at the same level as, Di Stefano, Puskas Netzer or Pele. Certainly not even close to Zidane, Maradona, C.Ronaldo. but thats Football and opinions its a game we love and we all have a different look on it. Makes the world go round!👍🏻

I think he plays quite well here even the commentator was saying he had a good game. Not everything is going to come off. Perhaps with all the hype we’ve come to expect too much of him.

Randybackgammon, i did make it from 1966 to 1971,72 george was the greatest player in the world. A few times a did say from 65 but then i changend it to 66, he just wasnt good enough in pre 66 never mind great enough. Did you notice how easily he was pushed off the ball and he was hardly touched at times. I laughed in the first minute when a player beat george to the ball shoulder to shoulder then george went down and slid at least 10 yards about 6 seconds after the challenge. He tried to stay on his feet but the guy was just a bit strong for him. He would never dive even if he had to go down in the strettford end lol that was one of the first thing that struck me watching george. But tbh before 1966 i would have took the ball of george easy and beat him to every ball. There was nothing to him. He had to get serious advice from sir matt about why he wasnt beating players so easy or really none at all. Thats why he passed alot in these early years? Sir matt took him to one side round about this time and said "george son when you take on a full back your running at full speed to try and beat them and there catching you all the time and just nutching you off the ball becouse your speed makes that easier for them and you just go down as quick. So when you go up to a full back to beat him start to take him on at half speed then when he matches you thats when you go up a gear at full speed and they wont catch you then" and george did just that and never looked back. Sir matt said hes got the skill he just needs a bit of direction, his control comes naturaly and the speed and bravery are all natural to george he didnt need to practice all that he was born with it. But at a young age even 17, 18, the best players still need to learn a bit more. With george it was so easy. He just couldnt see it so a told him and he did it becouse he always could do it. He just hadnt been told it yet. He could beat players alright but he struggled to go past the better ones. And i knew why, so i thought al have a word with him, plus he was showing them too much of the ball. But i didnt know if he knew that and it was a trick to draw the player in then go past them as they tackle you. But he didnt know that as well. So i said just dont show them the ball for too long george becouse its putting you into a tackle that you dont need to create its you that has the ball not him. Then 2 years later by age 20 no one would get the ball of him or even see it. It was all ready there, i just had to put a few bits together to make george the complete player i have ever saw.
