yeah, he always steals the show, even in GoodFellas....he only had one or two lines, but they were funny as hell....Coming to America, his scene on School Daze was the best part, and let's not forget Jungle Fever. i watched that just to see Gator dance and talk shit.

seriously ?!?! snakes on a plane, mace windu, nick fury ??!?
Lame characters, barely salvageable by the sheer awesomeness of SLJ
if you want a small but still incredibly strong role try his role as Gator, Wesley Snipes brother in Jungle Fever.
As for major roles, try "No Good Deed (the house on turk street)", "Coach Carter" and "Black Snake Moan"

Sam Jackson is cinematically frozen into one DNA acting strain as a reverse method actor - no matter what role he assumes. On one hand, fundamentally, he can be seen as a great actor because he is unlike anyone else, has mono traits overlaid on all his roles, plays no other diversified character types and uses the same tone, timbre and latitude throughout any script. On the other hand, this can also dub him as a bad actor because he never takes on anything opposite or alien to his legacy style in all movies. if he does take on something different, the character is immediately dominated by the base template of Sam Jackson. Turned all the way up he is Vincent Vega...toned all the way down he's Mace Windu, which is really a calm Vincent Vega finding his path in the diner scene in Pulp Fiction. Mace Windu turned up and about to slaughter the Dark Emperor is Vincent Vega again. All temperatures in between are balanced between these 2 characters. Sam Jackson is the only real-life actor who isn't really acting at all. It's not that Samuel L. Jackson is a great and unique actor or a bad actor, he just channels the energy of every common Black dude in America. Hit the streets of 'anytown' USA and you will find thousands of Sam Jacksons.

I think he's really good as Carl Lee Hailey in A Time to Kill, and it's a pretty different character than the majority he has done. The only moment the classic Jackson comes out is in the "I hope they burn in hell" scene, and it's was appropriate in the scene. I think it's a criminally overlooked performance of his. I thought he was really good in Unbreakable as well, there's a real sense of sadness and melancholy in his performance. Black Snake Moan is another. Point is, I do think he can act. But I think he's so good at bringing down the great vengeance and furious anger that the other side of him is overlooked.

While I was watching The Book Of Eli this morning I was thinking in these 2 types of actor: the chamaleons like Gary Oldman and Johny Depp, and the guys that only need to appear on the screen to make movies work like Samuel L. Jackson and Jack Nicholson. Sometimes people need to be told "remember Zorg (5th Element)? Gary Oldman... remember Drexl Spivey (True Romance)? Gary Oldman too". The guy's awesome!! He completely transforms in another person.
On the other hand we have guys like Samuel L. Jackson and Jack Nicholson, I bet some scenes and movies have been written taking their personalities as the only starting point... and they always work!! Think in As Good As It Gets as an example, I just can't picture a better face/person/actor for the Melvin Udall role.
I'm not saying which type of actor is better, I'm just saying that it's great having them to tell us all kind of stories. Also I'm only mentioning some real good actors, not Arnie or Tom Cruise who insist in being the same person in every movie they appear in.

He killed Jango Fett and is the first Jedi to fight Darth Sideous (I know there are 3 other Jedi Knights with him, but they die quickly, so Mace Windu is the first to last longer in a duel against Darth Sideous). Mace Windu fought well against Darth Sideous, unarmed him, and was in great position to kill him. If Anakin did not interfere and sliced his hand off, Mace Windu would have killed Darth Sideous and order would be restored to the galaxy. Mace Windu is one of the most powerful Jedi Masters in the Galaxy, second only to Yoda.
