Paul wasn’t a hero but his humanity is why I like him. In order to save his family and his newfound friends and help them he was willing to potentially sacrifice billions dead in the future. He tried to stop it but in the the end accepted it. I would’ve done the same for my children and family.

Thanks for watching!. Would agree that the very human desire to protect his loved ones from harm seems to be a major drive for Paul.Which I think separates him from the tyrannical dictator that some compare him to at times, The nuance that herbert built into the character and investment you have in his backstory and motivations make him one of the most complex characters ever and that really shows in the vastly different perspectives that people have on him. Would absolutely agree with you that if your children and family are at stake it is hard to tell what any of us would truly do

Chani had to be adapted for the modern audience. If she was as submissive to Paul as she was in the books, that would alienate a large part of the audience. Also the same with her beliefs that the Freman need to save themselves. It needed to be adopted for modern times and thinking.

Certainly seems like that was the effort that was being made. I think there are certainly positives to the direction that the film took for sure. While following the source material is always appreciated, as long as the story still honors the original a few detours to add some depth can work. Will be interesting to see how it is addressed going forward because Paul and Chani's children are absolutely essential to the future of dune and how they left it in two seems like that would be the end of the franchise if not cleverly resolved in part 3.

Paul wasn’t needed to free the Fremen. The Fremen would have destroyed the Harkonnens themselves. Arguably that’s why the Emperor did what he did. To destroy both the Atreides and the Harkonnens.
The holy war isn’t a fight for freedom on Arrakis. It’s a broader fight that will spread through the universe. So Paul appropriated a legitimate fight for freedom on a single planet and made it a universal holy war that leads to the deaths of 10s of billions of people and the sterilization of entire planets.
Paul has foreseen this and still goes ahead with this.

Thanks for watching! Great point, Paul obviously goes way to far and exploits his authority, turning it from a singular conflict into a massive war. Really appreciate you sharing your perspective and it certainly makes a ton of sense

How would the Fremen have defeated the harkonnens? They were largely ineffective until Paul showed up.

I don't think this dude understood the story.

@@CowboyRoy84 The Fremen were ineffective because the Harkonnens were well established. But when the Emperor made them leave to be replaced by the Atreides, they destroyed much of the infrastructure before leaving. And then they had to battle the Atreides and not just recreate all their infrastructure but expand it even further because the demand for spice from Arrakis had increased even more.
So they were rebuilding but also trying to expand deeper into Arrakis which made them extremely vulnerable, unlike before the Atreides arrival when they were well settled.

@@varunprasad-rf8kr that seems like a bit of a stretch. I think you’re making the story fit your own preconceptions vs having to work within the realities of the dune universe. Anything is possible but who knows how long the Fremen would’ve been genocided until Paul showed up. Or if they ever would have united enough to be effective against the harkonnens or the emperor. That doesn’t make Paul a hero but by saying “Fremen could’ve done it without him” without any real evidence from Herbert or DV you’re trying to make the moral questions easier instead of working within the realities of the story.
