      Right?! I truly love Elyse so much for simply being real & not being afraid to voice what is happening in an anxiety-ridden persons mind. Also, love how she is normalizing how _totally crippling_ *anxiety* _and/or_ *panic attacks* can be for some of us during what are _supposed_ to be _regular every day situations_ that should _not_ induce a need for the damn _fight or flight response._ _Why!?_ Why is my own nervous system failing me in these common situations and reacting in such an unwarranted trepidation to trick me into believing as if I am _truly_ going to _die_ in that moment, that I _quite often_ begin overthinking and imagine I’m on the verge of a heart attack because my heart rate feels as if it is going _no less_ than 150 bpm. And, _all of this_ is happening only because I just needed to well- first, work up the courage to _leave my house_ in the first place, and then actually _go inside a public place_ so I could merely purchase _a jug of milk_ for my twins? *No thank you.* 😅🫠

    This is simultaneously the most miserable and most relatable story I've heard in a while. A true series of unfortunate events, that could have been resolved if government agencies occasionally listened to reason rather than rules.

    • @raij465

      @shadowscall7758 Před 7 měsíci +1

      But what's to stop someone from claiming they accidentally clicked it when it wasn't an accident?
      Those rules are because people have tried to lie about it and appeal to "common sense". It's called social engineering and is the biggest problem for security in the world.

    • @thistemba
      @thistemba Před 7 měsíci +19

      1. It is kind of silly to have to prove that you don't get vertigo after accidentally filling out the form saying that you do, but not to have to prove anything it if you claim that you don't get vertigo on the form. Reasonably, you should either be required to prove it in both cases or neither.
      2. There's a time for rules and there is a time for common sense. I've had to fill out government forms not just expected, but required you to lie in certain fields just to have the form go through. I got in trouble for trying not to lie. Sometimes rules and systems are dumb and broken like that and when they are, "common sense" is exactly what we need.
      3. Yes, only common sense can lead to bad outcomes, but no one is asking for that. Just need common sense occasionally when the rules don't make sense.

    This has made me worry SO much about renewing my license in a year. I am going to be So ridiculously careful filling out that form because of this happens to me, I think I just won't drive anymore. That would be easier that reliving getting my driver's license. Also I cannot parallel park to save my life and somehow I survive, but I don't think the DMV will see it that way. Thank you.

      If you can do it early, I recommend it. I needed to renew my license this year. I should have been able to renew online, but for some reason they forced me to go in person. Well, the DMV is requiring appointments ever since COVID which has made it a real cluster. All the appts in my area were not for months. I found a small office 2 hours away and drove there to get an appt the next day (well, actually my husband had to drive me, as my license was now expired). From now on, I'm doing it early.

      I can relate a lot to this story because I moved countries and asked for my driving license to be converted into the new country's legislation (I have to do it or it won't count as valid), and the questionnaire asked a ton of questions including "Do you have any attention deficit disorder?".... having ADHD, I didn't want to lie so I said yes. This forced me to get a written statement from a doctor that I'm not dangerous behind the wheel, I did and sent all that in and they kept me waiting for over a month while they analysed my request.
      Then they sent me a letter saying that they want MORE written statements from the doctor and also my medical history + what meds I take + more waiting and it's just, FML I should've just lied and replied "no" on the questionnaire, since my ADHD doesn't affect my driving ability (if anything, I compensate by hyperfocusing on driving).
      So here I am still in the middle of this mess and without a driving license, because they are keeping mine for the moment and they haven't created the new one either. Wonderful. I bet if I'd replied "no" I would already have the new license by now...

    I had a seizure for the first time three weeks ago and dr told me I can’t drive for 90 days and I was like, “no problem!” Turns out not being able to drive when you have three young kids in school is actually super stressful and annoying so I related to this story more than I thought I would. I’m on a medication that prevents me from having any more seizures, so I’m hoping that’ll be good enough but turns out I really can’t drive for another two and a half months and I’m just so glad this didn’t happen to me around the time I needed to renew my license 😮‍💨

    • @justinvance9221
      @justinvance9221 Před 8 měsíci +18

      Depends on the state, but Utah's stupid regulations make me have a doctor clear me to drive every year, even though the last confirmed seizure I had was in 1997 at 5 years old. Also, the doctor doesn't do anything other than ask me if I've had any seizures. So, I hate the DMV.

    • @amigos4erin

      Automakers have made the US nearly 100% car centric. If you don’t have a car or can’t drive, you are automatically subhuman and don’t get to live the life everyone else does.
      It doesn’t have to be this way, but car makers want you to have to buy a car, so they lobby politicians to keep us trapped in a car dependent system.

      Does this mean the doctor acts as an agent of the state in this circumstance? Doctors have to report your medical conditions - what about HIPAA? Or are you supposed to self-regulate? I’m genuinely curious.

    • @jennifergraceh
      @jennifergraceh Před 8 měsíci +4

      Oh man…I’m a drug and alcohol counselor and I work a lot with clients mandated by the court into taking my super interesting and awesome First Offenders DUI Program so I hear literally hundreds of horror stories about people who try to get their licenses after completing their classes and whatever else they’re mandated to do. They’ll make their appointments, paperwork and proof of completion from my class in hand, only to find out they can’t get their license because 30 years ago, they had one, singular seizure caused by some random drug interaction that has no possible way of causing a risk of another seizure them now whatsoever because they haven’t taken that medication combination in 30 years since the first time it happened. Why, up until THIS point, they’d been able to renew their license without issue, I have absolutely no idea but it happens all the time to be a coincidence. It’s some kind of glitch in dmv’s system most likely.
      So, what I’m concerned with (for your sake) is that your doctor may have had a duty to report your seizure to the DMV. My ex-husband had epilepsy when he was MUCH younger and he lost his license because of this and the doctor was required to report it by law to the DMV. He was never able to get his license back until he went back to the doctor and got cleared, even though he hadn’t had a seizure in literal decades without even being on medication or anything. The DMV doesn’t care about whether you SAY you’re fine though; anyone can say they’re fine because they genuinely FEEL fine and think they can pull off the road in time and get behind the wheel, hop on the freeway going 75, have a seizure, and hit a minivan with a family full of kids and then there’s a tragedy that could have been avoided. I absolutely see the headache from both sides-I would be so irritated with having to get cleared every year from my doctor before being able to continue driving. We all live busy lives-especially once we get older and have to juggle a career and a household and children-adding one more “thing” to the list every year (two, if you count the day off you have to take to go to the damn dmv). I’m so grateful that I don’t have to deal with that because I probably would just stop driving all together and end up spending a small fortune on ride share.
      So, if I were you, I would do a bit of research about what the laws are in your state around (I’m not sure if they call it) mandated reporting of epilepsy. I believe each state is a little different in how they go about it. This way, you know what to expect and aren’t blindsided.
      I wish you the very best! 🩷
      And, on a side note, happy Halloween 🎃 👻🌙

    I am sorry you had to go through this! I’m a User experience designer who often designs forms like this online. It is incredibly frustrating because generally it is considered straightforward and easy to digitize the world around us when it’s based on a processes(processes) that we have had for decades. This is the perfect example of how something was over simplified and had a serious negative impact on your life that could of easily been prevented in the software. I’m sorry you had this experience. The only legal obligation the online world has mostly to protect against poor quality digital products is the American disability act 1993. Most companies or institutions have to be sued their websites or apps and so bad. At this point it’s ridiculous we don’t have more standards for digital things just like physical objects. Quality insurance, safety, consumer protection etc.

    I can relate to this so much because I also had my license cancelled for a stupid reason!
    Here goes my story:
    I worked inside an university and we were closing for the holidays. We had a plant in our office and someone said "someone should take the plant home and water it otherwise it will die!" I said "i have a car, i can take it!" I then spent the next two months taking care of that plant, which i never do for my own plants, because it was not MY plant so i took extra good care of it.
    When the holidays ended, I took the plant back the same day ee had a meeting. Around the university building there were only "2-hour" parking spots, but I thought "no problem, I'll just park here, take the plant upstairs and then come back down and park my car in the parking lot."
    I went up with the plant... got caught up in the meeting and forgot to go down.
    When I get to the car, of course there was a ticket waiting for me because I stayed 4 hours parked in a 2-hour spot.
    For some stupid reason, this is considered a BIG DEAL in the traffic law. I still had my temporary license, so I could not have any tickets otherwise it would be cancelled.
    My license was canceled. Because of a plant.
    I had to go through the whole system again (which is super expensive and time consuming in my country) to get my license again (which I lost again one month after I got it for the second time but that's a story for another moment...)

    Second, I chalk this up to the incredibly hormone saturated brain space of a woman deep into her 3rd trimester, and I laughed along the whole way, and also cried tears of frustration with you, because among the list of things I've mistakenly done whilst pregnant, locking my keys in the car (twice, two separate instances) and having to have insurance pay a guy to come get them out, locking myself out of the house, losing my phone, losing my wallet, exploding a pot of green beans on the stove, crying at a wolf documentary, crying at not being able to see my own feet, tripping constantly... There are more, but I do have a little dignity left, so... I'll just keep those ones to myself.❤

    Obsessed with the way you roll your hoodie sleeves (loved that story btw! As with all of your stories, of course!) but I am ESPECIALLY loving this layered look with the sleeve roll! This story had me feeling all the feels right along with you, been in so many similarly self-inflicted ridiculous situations so this whole roller coaster was a very familiar feeling! ❤ and nothing beats the ending of your story time videos with you ducking to show the photo receipts! I legitimately end laughing out loud in a room all by myself every freaking time and I have absolutely not one ounce of shame for doing so! Thank you!

    I've been going through some life happenings and have been stir crazy with needing to connect with someone in a different type of way. I've followed you for a long time and have enjoyed your stories, but I recently, today, have been devouring your videos and it's such a breath of relief and energy that has given me a sense of calm to be able to connect through the internet without you knowing all this emotion is happening over here. Haha
    Thank you for your videos, vulnerability, and fun joy.

The gift and incredible talent of making songs. Songs that are just as relatable as your stories. Thank you for these.

    Omgosh, Elyse. I had a similar situation happen to me last year. Needed to renew my license, went online to do it because that should be easier and quicker, right? Well, since I last renewed my licence I have had LASIK surgery, so I no longer wear glasses. Not thinking it would be an issue, i selected the box that says I do not need glasses to drive, but since my previous license was a different class bc of the glasses thing, it wouldn't let me go through with it online and said I had to go in person to the DMV to renew my license and prove my eyesight was good. I tried to cancel it out and do it again, but it had logged my first try and wouldn't let me redo it. So I had to hire a babysitter to watch my five kids, and take my pregnant butt into the DMV and wait approximately forever to prove to them that I can, in fact, actually see without glasses now. I guess it's good that my license is accurate, but at the time I wished so bad I could go back in time and uncheck that stupid box. You really gotta think about what boxes you check on that DMV website! 😂😭😐

    Wow thank you for sharing that! I've definitely made some similar stoooopid time consuming mistakes. Can't think of any right now--probably because I've deeply suppressed them in my subconscious 😅, but I can also feel my subconscious relating to that excruciating disbelief of the very simple and costly stoopid thing that I just did. So glad to know I'm not the only who makes these kinds of mistakes! 😅❤

    I resonate with this so well!!!! Just recently I moved states. Went to get my new license and I couldn’t get one because my proof of addresses weren’t yet valid.
    No problem, I still have my old license. NOPE! My old license (which I thought expired on my next birthday) had expired on my last birthday.
    Ok, we just get a new license. Now with valid proof of address. Again, NOPE! My birth certificate of 41 years is no longer valid in the state of VA. WTH?!
    Went to go get a new birth certificate and they require a picture of a valid drivers license or passport. Both of which are now expired (license by 6 months and passport by 2 weeks!!!). 🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️
    I then had to go back to my original state, use my state license and my old bank address to prove that I still lived in the state, took the written test online the week before visiting, paid for a drivers permit (after driving back to the old state) to sneak my way into a driving test that same day. I was ready to sit there all day and take any canceled appointment. They were booking out over a month in advance 📆.
    Luckily, I got there right as they opened up and because I had taken the written test online, had my old license which proved my SSN and BC info I was able to get my old license renewed so I am now a legal driver (at least).
    Now to try and get my new state license and a new BC, passport and SS card so I never have to do this again. 😂😂

Stuff like this with “adult tasks” has totally happened to me before, and I can totally see myself accidentally checking something off, missing it on my “proofread” before clicking enter, so this is a SUPER great reminder to quadruple-check EVERYTHING on paperwork like this before submitting!
