Who Am I? (Opening) - Exploring questions about freedom and identity are at the core of Buddhist practice. Jack examines how these two themes are intertwined and encourages us to look in the mirror with a fresh perspective.
“In the moment of looking in the mirror, you become the witness to this physical incarnation. You see the sagging or wrinkles, or whatever it is, but there is also a knowing that this is just the body; it’s not who you are. You are the awareness that is taking stock.”
A Shift of Identity (16:00) - Jack shows us how the practice of mindfulness and compassion invites a shift of identity from the small sense of self, our sense of separation and fear, to our fundamental nobility and dignity.
“We are all quite loyal to our suffering. All that stuff that we take ourselves to be that come from our history and conditioning.”
In a Moment of Mindfulness (32:45) - All it takes is a moment of mindfulness to wake us up to how caught up in our small sense of self we really are. Jack shares examples of how differently we can live life when we are resting in the seat of awareness without being entangled by the hinderances of doubt and judgment.
“The point is that you don’t get rid of yourself, but that instead if you practice with compassion and loving-kindness you can hold this incarnation without being trapped or lost in it.”
