How can the local language survive in UK and other parts of the western world when even in Ghana, some parents speak English with their kids at home? We have to speak our local language with our children whenever they are in the house, because definitely they will speak the English because they are going to school, if they cannot speak their language, they have lost their identity
We speak Twi to them but if they go to school they struggle to speak the English so the Teachers will call you and tell us to speak only English to them that's the problem, as for me the Teachers have put my kids to Taraphy they said they can't speak well, but in the house they talk and say everyone name 😂😂 when you speak the twi they will respond in English that one to is another problem 😂😂
Say it again and it's very dangerous o, they will see the impact in the near future, my sis in Finland but makes sure she speaks akuapim with her kids and they can speak even though Thier dad is white, they speak Finnish, twi and English fluently, your language can be a coded language for you in future when there is trouble, if you can't speak it you are so lost, lost identity!

They were speaking good English when they came from Ghana so I continue with the routine of speaking twi at home. They can rattle in America English and at the same time twi. Kofi, if you interview children in some of the schools in Ghana they will tell you they don’t speak Twi. Many homes in Ghana only speak English with their kids so don’t be surprised kids abroad don’t speak the dialect. When I’m Ghana, I like to speak the dialect but some people respond to me in English.
We're talking about Ghanaian born citizens in the UK. Just do your best to teach them our language and your talking about children in Ghana who can speak the language by default.
@@AlbertOwusuGyan I understood the assignment and I’m entitled to my opinion and so do you. Yes, children in Ghana can speak the dialect by default but some don’t want to or pretend they don’t understand. I know what I’m talking about. This is really thought provoking, we really do need to teach our children our language otherwise this will be to our detriment as a country and as a continent, these children are those Africa should be nurturing to uplift the continent. The Asians do and they have used their diasporan children to their advantage.
If they start communicating in twi before they start school, it doesnt go away. It's deginitely the parents failt!! I'm so sick of Ghanaians and this foundational self hatred and inferiority complex. How are the Chinese and Indian and some other ethnic children growing up abroad, able to speak their languages so fluently with their families and still speak English! Ghanaians always making excuses about everything!!
Please teach them twi at home oooo automatically the English is around them but try ur best as parents to speak twi at home all the time..my sister use to speak nzema to her kids everyday and they speak both nzema and English fluently ❤
How can some of our Africa people in aborikyire their children speak their local language, it's only Ghanaian children who doesn't speak their language, once you can't speak your language, you have lost your identity
At least parents should teach their children their local language than telling them they will get it when they grow whiles it's the best to teach them when they are young.
Brighten the corner where you are'. Do your best in your homes to speak Ghanian languages with your little ones. It's a shame some parents want to learn English from their little ones, so they end up speaking English at home. I can proudly say that my children speak Twi fluently. They also understand Ga, and Ewe but can't speak. If Kofi were to meet my 4 little ones I'm sure you'll all be thrilled.

My son who is 22 years now told us he will not speak our language when he was little. We did everything we could to help him speak Twi, but to no avail. The Good news is that , he has started learning Twi. Fortunately, my daughter can read and write Twi because she studied abroad (Legon) for a semester. I used to blame parents of kids who do not speak our language until I had the same challenges to understand them # Don’t blame some of the parents.
Hmmm…this situation with the twi is a problem. Oftentimes, the parent’s English is deficient and they are using this deficient English to communicate with their kids, which is problematic. This is why the kids often go wayward because the parent does not have an efficient grasp of the English language to effectively express their wishes to the child. Once the child realizes that their English capacity exceeds the parent’s capacity, it somehow diminishes the level or respect for the parent. It also appears to diminish the confidence the child has in the parent’s opinions, direction, guidance or advice. I would recommend that parents speak to their children in the language that the parent is most proficient. Imagine trying to scold your child to correct their bad behaviour and you are using broken English? Or, the parent is unable to fully explain why the behaviour is problematic because they have limited access to words in the English language? Ka twi na yɛ free wae.
British Educational System frowns on speaking other languages. When your child is speaking other languages they consider the child's English as second language and the school will apply to the local council for extra funding to teach the child. If the funding doesn't come the school will let you know and the child will be left behind in English.
But I'm shocked to witness at least two families in Ghana who are speaking English with their children and now even though they are Ghanaians, they don't understand the twi neither do they understand even though they are in Ghana so this indeed an issue.
