Leaking Duracell Batteries #6 -- Batteries DO NOT Have to Leak

  • A years-old battery-powered toy is opened to determine the brand and status of its batteries. The Toshiba batteries from 2006 were still going strong today, July 14, 2022 and showed NO SIGNS OF LEAKAGE! Unlike my experience with Duracell batteries which suggests nearly all of them WILL LEAK -- often many years before they reach their expiration date. Why is it that these Toshiba batteries, made in Japan, don't leak, and the Duracell batteries do seem to leak with maddening regularity? It might be poor or inattentive engineering and/or manufacturing.

Over the years, I have had countless failure of the Duracell brand batteries leaking whereby damaging flashlights, recorders and various equipment. An excellent video!

After watching numerous videos regarding battery leakage, and nearly every instance involving Duracell batteries, today is officially my last day using them. I have 5 Duracell cells that are unused, either 2 or 3 years before expiration, and they have all been taped up and disposed of. Duracell used to be my goto brand, until I had some instances of leakage, and so I started moving toward other brands, but mostly rechargeables. And while I have started using rechargeables in nearly all my devices, I do still use disposables for some rare instances where rechargeables are not fitting the usage scenario or simply will not work (as in the case of my AC NCV detector).

I believe the date stamp is the expiration date. On Eveready black label "9 Lives" Zinc Carbon D cell there are two dates on the negative terminal, the production date and the expiration date. Amazing that the Toshiba cells have held up this well. After watching your video I ordered some for initial testing from Ebay. Duracell, especially AA can't be trusted. I've seen them leak years before the expiration date sealed in their original package.

Agreed. I have also had Members Mark from Samsclub alkaline batteries leak so I don't buy them either.
