- Myanmar has an extensive metre gauge railway network, these days, entirely diesel operated. However, the railway has kept a large stock of steam locomotives, although only a handful are steamable.
This selection shows a reproduced mixed freight being operated from Pyinmana to Taungoo - Part One.
Recorded in December 2018.

Sayangnya, Myanmar tertahan oleh pemerintah nasionalis dan agamanya. Sadly, Myanmar is held back by its nationalist government and its religion ....... Andy
I was surprised at the wheel arrangement! I thought it would be a little o6o clunker but was pleased to see such a Loco! Was it oil fired or coal?
We managed to get a pacific into steam as well although it struggled to drag its train along the track. Video coming soon. They're all oil fired by the way.

This is amazing! I like the passengers climbing aboard the Express seemingly in the middle of nowhere. Here in the states we climb aboard like that after a photo runby on a railfan trip! Judging by the condition of the track, the Express can't be very fast although some parts looked like concrete ties and welded rail. You must have incredible contacts to be able to set up tours such as this. Are the people onboard the freight members of your rail tour? Will they do a steam powered passenger train for you? Just wondering.
Thanks for that kind comment. There's a lot more to come over the next few days. The term express is used a little loosely! The trains stop at every station and they manage about 40mph at best. There is a bit of concrete sleepering but generally the track is in a poorly maintained condition and - as you can see - weed control isn't a high priority. The locals just jumped on and off our charter, although we did encourage them. The arrangements took a lot of work, you're right. Keep watching - you'll be surprised at some of the things we managed to arrange. They do include a passenger train with a pacific loco - although it was struggling to move itself, let alone the train!

I agree that steam locomotives are bad polluters. Most of what you can see in the smoke, though, are the particulates which fall to the ground rapidly. The real damage is done by greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide. These are given out in just as large a quantity by road vehicles, aircraft, ships and power stations. There are only a tiny number of steam locos left working and they are beautiful and fascinating machines. They are a valuable relic from our industrial past and need to be saved from destruction. The pollution from these few steam locos is TINY compared to the pollution from the billions of road vehicles, aircraft and ships in the world. Getting rid of just a handful of steam locomotives will make no difference to the world but getting rid of the pollution from road vehicles would probably sort the problem in one move. If you’d like to save our Earth from disaster, please get rid of your car or motor bike, don’t buy anything that has been delivered by air, sea or lorry, switch off your electricity at home, never go on holiday by aircraft or car. Not easy, is it?

Unfortunately this locomotive was not in good working order and really struggled. By the way - Honda CB650 great bike! I ride a Honda NT650 ..... Andy
Myanmar is pretty Backward compare to rest of the world, It's just another north korea without nukes.
The country is held back by religion and a government which is more concerned with its own position of power than the people it serves ..... Andy
