This performance is from the Chinese show “I Am Singer” in 2017 - a showcase competition for established, professional Chinese singers with a voting audience of 500 people from the music industry. Dimash was the youngest (22 years old) and the first foreigner ever to be invited on the show as a wildcard. As a total unknown in China, he wasn’t expected to last more than half the show. Dimash opened and won the very first episode of the show with his performance of SOS. He astonished everyone, came second in the competition, an overnight sensation in China (600 million views of this performance) and a global phenomenon. He also won other episodes with this performance of Adagio and Opera 2. He turned 29 in May.
Dimash is trained in classical (bel canto) and contemporary music and has been training (voice and piano) since he was 5 years old. He has degrees in voice (classical), contemporary music, completed a Masters in composition and is currently completing a PhD in musicology. He was offered a position with Astana Opera but declined to follow a career in contemporary music, mixing classical elements and traditional Kazakh music with pop music. Nice reaction, Duane! This was in 2017 on a show called "The Singer". Those other people were all seasoned and famous singers who were competing against each other. Dimash actually came in second against Sandy Lam, the girl that had her hands against her face in the video. The contestants were ALL very supportive of Dimash and admired him, especially Terri Lin, who is famous in his own right, and they are very good friends to this day. It is said that he didn't win simply because he was the only one there was not Chinese, but singing SOS on this show is what made him a star overnight, even to his shock. You haven't done "Stranger". I would definitely go with that one next. He's knock your socks off, as usual! Keep Dimash coming! We just adore him, not just for his singing, but because he has a beautiful soul. Yes this is a Chinese signing competition. Dimash was invited to participate. As a foreigner he would not have been allowed to win. They changed that rule the following year. Diamsh is 22yrs old I believe here. He already had a distinguished career in his own and surrounding countries eg Russia, Belarus etc etc. Holding several very prestigeous awards for not only sining, but as a citizen etc.
This was Dimash's 1st time away from home, at that time he spoke Kazak, Russian n others but sings in many more. He had no English or Chinese though, and had to learn the lyrics phenetically each week.
The blessing of this experience for him, was , that the Chinese immediately took to him for incredible sining and performing talent, butvalso for his humble and generous nature. They, the Chinese, set about immediately spreading his talent around the world, so broadened his person world wide. I am soooo grateful for that. Gr8 review.

Adagio was the 6th performance of The Singer competition in China in 2017. A really beautiful song❤️. A song that Lara Fabian (a Belgian-Canadian singer) has already sung and also written the lyrics for. Dimash has always been a great admirer of Lara. But Dimash takes this song to another level. Every time, I see this performance I forget to breathe. The emotions that Dimash sends out with this performance literally hit me physically every time🤯. And you can see that I’m not the only one. It speaks for itself that this performance leads to such emotions as that of this woman from the jury and even makes jury members cry.
This is so emotional because he literally sang for survival as he was almost voted out on the last episode on Uptown Funk. That's why he had to give everything at Adagio.
I love his outfit with his blue suit and white shoes. If you watch several videos of him, you will see that he often falls on his knees during many of his performances. So a Dear gave him knee pads as a gift. I don’t think he wore them on stage though. Although he has certainly gotten one or two bruises😂.
The Singer is a show in China where only established singers are invited to perform. All the singers invited to this show are already well-known artists in China who have already won awards. Dimash was invited as the first foreigner as a wild card and the youngest in the history of this show. They became aware of him because he had already won some important competitions in Kazakhstan and Belarus, among others. He was still completely unknown in China. Actually, it was intended that he would only have 1 or 2 appearances. But it came completely different. When he woke up the next morning after his first performance of SOS he was a megastar in China and even found bodyguards outside his hotel room. SOS’ first video had 600 million views when it aired. He was just 22 years old at the time.
What I love about the Chinese competitors is that they don’t behave like competitors. Everyone wishes everyone luck. Everyone watches the other’s performance. Clap, sing along. In my opinion, no one begrudges the success of another. They might not have taken Dimash seriously at first, but that quickly changed after SOS. Through ist honest, cheerful and open nature, he found friends very quickly. Contacts that still exist today.

I highly recommend you to watch the version with the story behind on the Gloria Wu channel first and then the one from his Bastau concert. It was the 8th performance of this competition. I don’t think there are copyright issues, because the videos on this channel are already edited and there are English subtitles.
I think you will appreciate the Bastau version even more if you’ve seen The Singer version before.
As somebody mentioned in a comment, I totally agree that it is always very frustrating when reactors jump on the Bastau version and don’t know the sad story of this song and don’t even try to activate the subtitles. I can understand that a lot of Dears prefer reactions to this version because it is just incredibly more powerful. In my opinion, however, it loses at bit of its impression, if you don’t know why he sings, the way he sings.
This song tells a very sad but true story. You really have to watch this with subtitles. It’s really important to know what the song is about.
In the Singer version he was so sick and had a severe sore throat and fever. He lost his voice the night before his performance of Daybreak. I heard him say in an interview that it was very painful throughout the song, that his throat feels like shredded glass but he didn’t want to disappoint the people who stand behind him and so he pulled himself together and went on stage. He got 5 injections from this doctor in the hospital. And the doctor told him not to sing high notes. You can see how concerned the other competitors were and they suffered with him. They knew he was not doing well and one of them even gave him a very expensive Chinese medicine from his own inventory. The problem was his busy schedule between the performances and he didn’t have enough time to recover. After the performance he lost his voice again.
It’s unbelievable how he always manages to convey emotions to such a degree. Though I think in this one particular version the emotions he shows are mostly concern about his voice keeping up with the song and the pain he must have been in doing it.
The Bastau version (no sore throat) of Daybreak is phenomenal and mind-blowing. So emotional and heartbreaking. Maybe you can do both together. Many reactors do and so you can see the difference between this two performances. If not, again please react to The Singer version first🙏🙏🙏.
In both versions I always cry my eyes out. I don’t know why I have to cry more. Because of the story or the fact, that he was in such pain and performed anyway because he didn’t want to disappoint the audience. Both version were in the same year 2017.

By the time this talent show was over Dimash was pretty well known around the world. He is by far the best singer I have ever heard. He is a promoter of peace who cares about humanity, and the love shared between him and his "dears" is mutual and soul deep. He is an alien all right, and I would follow him to the edge of the universe.

Yes, they are other contestants. This was a Chinese singing competition for professional & established Chinese singers. Dimash was the first foreigner and the youngest to have been invited to compete. He was only 22 yrs. old at the time. They did not think he would make it past round 2, this is round six. He only spoke His native tongue, Kazak, and Russian, but sang songs in English, Russian, and Mandarin, also Italian ( Confessa/ Diva Dance). They are kept in separate rooms until after they perform, and then they are together in one large room. None of them knew anything about Dimash, not even what he looked like until after his first performance of SOS. He was the first person to perform in the opening round. The next day, he was provided with security guards and had over 6 million followers on Weibo, the Chinese equivalent of Instagram. He won three rounds, and should have won it all, but came in second place. They gave #1 to a beloved and honored Chinese female singer. Also, all the others were 10-39 yrs. Dimashs' senior. Adagio is an italian word, that means "Slowly".
This is also used in music to define the pace of a music (a bit slow, between lento and andante) and also as a name of a piece of a sonate, concerto or symphony that is using that specific parce.
The music from this song of Lara Fabian is a pop translation of an italian classic piece called "Albinoni's Adagio". It was written in 1958 by Remo Giazotto who was an admirer of Albinoni, a musician from the 17th/18th century. He claimed it was from him and give his music this name but there is consensus today that he most probably has composed it himself.
The classic music piece is globally famous and there were many different translations into different songs, with different music composition and different lyrics (Daniele Licari, Sarah Brightman and Sissel Kyrkjebo for instance).
But the most famous version, by far, is Lara’s version: it was translated into a pop song for her, she wrote lyrics in english and italian for it and is the original performer of this new version.
She kept the title Adagio and wrote a story with a double meaning: a woman that is awaiting to find her love / an artist that is awaiting the god of inspiration.
This song has become a classic and has been covered by many : Shirley Bassey (!!), Dimash (Lara is his absolute idol and he covered several of her songs), Floor Jansen, Polina Gagarina, Julie Anne San Jose, Giulia Falcone, Laura Bretan, Il Divo, Rimar, Vitas, Anastasia Luna, Evgenia Fanfara, , …
They made great covers but none of these match the amazing storytelling performance of Lara, or her ability to use vocal subtleties to be in sync with the music, exposed in her live from the concert From Lara with Love.

Yes, they were contestants, but no Dimash didn't win because he wasn't Chinese and the show was in Chins. this was in 2017 and they changed the rules because everyone was upset. But he did get his start at stardom on that show, so he won in the long run

Somehow the Chinese girl Sandy Lam won the competition. Dimash took second. I did watch her songs and do not agree with the outcome. She has been making albums in China for a long time and he's the youngest contestant ever maybe that had something to do with it. Plus, he sang in different languages they may not have understood. As well as Chinese he sang French, Russian, English and I believe Kazak or Turkic.
Foreigners weren't allowed to win when he competed but the rules were changed the next year.
