This Dirt Bike Training Was the Hardest Thing I've EVER Done on a Motorcycle

- This past weekend was the hardest thing I've ever done on a motorcycle. I signed up for the Shane Watts Dirt Wise dirt bike training because I always want to improve my skills and learning from a former world champion enduro racer seemed like a great way to do that. I was not prepared for the absolute butt kicking I was about to receive over the course of two days. I was so over my head at this off road motorcycle training.
I entered the weekend 100% sure I'd never do a stoppie, a wheelie, or ride my motorcycle over a 2 foot log and by Sunday afternoon I had done all of those things and more multiple times on my Honda CRF250F. I always recommend that people get as much off road motorcycle training as possible to increase their safety and enjoyment when riding dual sport and adventure motorcycles but I was in no way prepared for how far I was going to stretch my personal comfort zone at this training.

Really appreciate you showing your spills and showing yourself learning. It really makes this channel a confidence booster to feel like struggling is part of the journey and not perfectly edited rides.
It's all part of the process. 😉
You say you are not out to impress..... but I want you to know I am very, very impressed. Thank you for all the videos. I have to remember to nod "yes" more and shake my head "no" less.
Great riding with you out there Ben. You did great and we look forward to going back again next year. PS - I'm still sore today as well - Jeff
That was badass Mr. dork! Kudos for hanging in to the end.
Props on doing the hard thing! re: Your venting at ~10 minutes - I used to road race sportbikes. The skills learned there never really directly applied to riding on the street, but getting into an exit ramp too fast, or having to brake hard because someone stops for no reason in front of you, etc. and knowing that you're really only operating at 50% of what you're capable - because you've put yourself and the bike to the test in a safe environment - is a HUGE confidence booster. So even if you never have to wheelie over any 2 ft logs in the future, every 8-12 inch log is going to feel like an absolute piece of cake. =)
This is definitely one of those deals where it sucks in the moment but he'll be incredibly happy/proud at the end. Like you said 75% of the logs and obstacles he's going to come across now will be easy peasy for him. I wish I had the money and classes around me to be able to do a class like this
You make an excellent point.
Great job, Ben!! You always manage to gut up and persevere, seen you do it over and over. You’re a real ambassador and inspiration to the sport from so many angles! Keep livin’ that dream brother!!
Dude! I'm smiling ear to ear over here after you go from "can't do a wheelie" to flipping 180's and clearing logs! Also tells me that I do 100% need to find a class like this locally!
Great job, Ben. Pushing our perceived limits is always challenging.
You've picked up some very useful skills and that has to be confidence inspiring (someone had to say it)
I hope to see future videos where you put your new skills to use.
Always be sharpening the saw.
Brother all I can say is that you've inspired me! If you can do it then so can I! Great ride!
hell yeah you can!
@@DorkintheRoad Gotta thank you for getting my mind on riding again. I quit for awhile during college because I had a stupid fall. Used your guides to get a 2018 DRZ 400 and started getting out there!
@@alabamalanche excellent choice!
Ben this was great! It's a great way to get decent fitness while having fun! working out sucks. but crashing and hooning around with your friends, learning what you can grow to do is such a humbling and character developing experience. you the man!
From being unsure to do a wheelie and go over a 2 foot log, to just doing it like a boss is truly inspiring!! Nicely done!
Jeeeeezzz.. I’m out of breath just watching you. Way to go, sir!
Your honesty, willingness to try and sense of humour made this video hilarious! You're giving me some inspiration to safely try some new things on my CRF!
You were killin' it out there! Great job!
AWESOME video! great job!
You were a teacher! Trust the process student! It's like spelling SALAD over and over the first day of typing class.
Knowing how to corner fast, keeps you from death gripping when you miss your rear brake pedal. I raced MX for 20 years, he is teaching you the right skills. Well done!
Good sharing! Just finished a BMW adventure school… humbling… I still have a sore rib! But I definitely got better!
Hearing your mental struggles and dought turn into results and growth is truely inspiring. Your mission statement is working as I book my first off road instruction. Never stop.
awesome!
Way to keep sticking with it!
Thanks for being so honest and for sharing your experiences.
🏍️💨💪🏽
Very well done! So impressed!!!🫡
Love how you hung in there despite feeling in over your head! Also you're honesty with yourself (& us) as you talked through your fears, morning of day two. You're setting such a good example Ben on so many levels!!!
Ben, I love that you show the good and the bad, your journey, and how you grow. That’s what makes you such a great CZcamsr
Incredible. Great job Ben. Thanks for sharing. That’s some tough stuff you accomplished!
Wow some intimidating stuff! Ben, you killed it! Nicely done.
Loved this one, and the commentary. Great stuff!
Good job man! I enjoyed watching you learn and progress.
As a fellow try hard that enjoys being challenged, this was so fun to watch. You demonstrated the benefit of coaching and formal education. Having a coach show their confidence in you can really help you press on in situations that you would have otherwise quit had you been on your own. None of these skills come naturally. Everyone has to start as an amateur. For me, that’s what really keeps riding exciting. Being a beginner is scary, but being intermediate is reinvigorating. Keep having fun, Ben!
Wow, that looks hard! Kudos to you for sticking with it and getting those wheelies in :)
Great video! Great, great video
I thought that was really good and you really did flipping awesome. Very inspiring. 🙂
Damn he really is a good teacher and at 25:15 when he took your bike to show you was great cause it removes the " my bike probably cant do it" mentality that most of us have!
Hell yeah! Good job man!!
You Just leveled up big time!!! 👍🏾 Awesome job, great content
Ben, love seeing you get excited about learning. You are such an inspiration to me!
I hate to admit it but I laughed more on this episode than any of your others. Not because you were bad, because you talked us through all the thoughts we all have, and then surprised yourself at how well you really did. Entertaining and inspiring sir. Well done!
Really liked watching this. Great job!
Great communicator!
That was AWESOME…nice work
This is the best I've ever seen you ride you can do it keep it up
Love this video! Day two progress is awesome! And you love it when he's right. Agree with everyone here that said thank you for showing the spills and pain. You're all of us.
As a 44yo, 6'5 and 275lbs dude that's been riding on the streets for years but want to get into Dual Bikes and off road riding, you're an inspiration man. You're a big (no pun intended) reason why I think I'll finally pull the trigger and get myself a dual bike! Cheers!!!!
Yesssss. That guy worked your man parts right into the dirt. Awesome video. Bet you are a better rider after going through that class.
Dude, I hear you. I've been going to Motoventures down here in So Cal, and Andre has pushed me to do things I thought were waaayyy out of my wheeel house. The thing I learned is, pre-game daily with advil with breakfast, and the one holding me back is me. I'm really good at it. Fortunately, there's another part of me that says DO IT! You got this. I know you do because I watch you do it constantly. Kudos for not giving up the next morning.
Excellent video. I cheered when you made that log properly!
That was freaking awesome!!! Completely reminds me of why I want to dual sport.
"I am going to progress or die, those are the two options" got me🤣 Awesome video! Definitely going to save these once I get into trail riding. You crushed it, seriously! I was cheering when you conquered the log!🔥Thanks for sharing!
Well done. Pushing past your comfort zone to get those skills you didnt know you needed
i was rooring so hard for you on the first few log crossings, that was awesome
Best episode ever! Eat that other dirtbike channels! That was awesome! Love the honesty!! I was leaning over logs with you man!! Wow!! Weird to say but so proud!! Inspiring!!!
This is such a good video I am watching it for the second time
Awesome stuff! Well done and thanks for sharing! Greetings from New Zealand 🇳🇿 👍👍
Ben
AWESOME video! That looked like torture! Great stuff.
Nice riding with you out there. You killed it on the 250f. It’s cool seeing your video and all of us training from a different perspective
Now you know what I feel like when Im doing it on my 1250GSA....ha!!!....Great Stuff...well done and keep it up!!!
I love these types of videos. Give confidence to us newer riders to try cool things.
One would say that Ben is "confidence inspiring" 😎
Watching you hop that log and learn almost real time was inspiring. Thank you
Well done bud, once you get your mind around it you can accomplish anything 🤙🏼
Ben you did such a great job. Looking back at how much you've progressed since you started it really is amazing! Honestly we are all cheering for you every time you nailed it.
Great job, man!
This is my favorite type of dork in the road content. Inspires me to go out and do harder things and try to get better at this.
Loved watching this Ben...feels encouraging to watch you as this is something I would love to learn but have 0 confidence in myself sometimes.
This is hard work right here, good job mate :)
This was an awesome video
Great job pushing your limits.
Very impressive, the class looked challenging and a lot of fun.
What a fantastic video, really showed me how much I need to work at getting better to the point I want to be at.
That looks like some super awesome training. It looks super intimidating, but after several attempts I can imagine that the initial fear goes away. This is exactly the type of training I should do. Excellent video.
Shane is the man... I got the dvd series maybe 20 yrs ago..and they are amazing my skills improved so much all the stuff you learned during that class will make you realize what you and your bike can really do..and only make you a much better rider overall ..your trail riding abilities will improve greatly worth every penny..also if you race.. enduro ..type stuff the skill you will have will only make you progress in leaps and bounds.. I rewatched them over and over and still practice them and do drills.. I am 56 and can still do the hard stuff. I have told so many people about Shane he is a great teacher.. listen and learn.. wanna be an amazing woods and trail rider get the dvd series !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ben, you did great, that was awesome. I’m doing something similar about two weeks with a guy up here in New Brunswick. Thank you for sharing your experience. I’m glad you learnt a lot.
Dang Ben, what a great video Just the class I need to do to get my skills better.
What are you talkin about...this is your next big career move my friend!
:) Thanks for doing what you do and reminding us bigger guys that we've got a place here too.
this is awesome!!
Well done dude!
Look at you hopping that log! Nice, bud!
Jeezis! I am a fat old guy that has ridden dirt bikes my whole life, but I don't believe I have done anything that difficult on a bike! Great video!
Bravo! 👏👏 Nice stuff💪
You made us proud bro
Well done Ben
Great video! Seeing you do things that you obviously fear is inspiring. Makes me want to a class and do the same.
Ben you have gotten very very very good at this type of training.
Way to go Ben, you rock.
And btw I never use the mute button. You’re always real with us.
I took his course about 10 years ago, you are a way better rider than I was. I felt way over my head and almost left after the first day. Very happy I came back for day two. I sat out some of the more difficult/challenging drills but still got a lot out of the training! Glad you stuck it out👍
Great job.
Thanks Ben, you almost psyched yourself out but stuck it out Man, it was awesome, I gotta get my butt out and take a lesson or three, in your honor Brother. Thanks Ben, for sharing, ibuprofen & coffee.
DORK!! This is awesome some good riding there! I would be very intimidated so good on ya!
Love the vid. Your humility is reassuring to us newbies. Thanks for posting the good and the bad. It was great to see you gain confidence throughout the practices.
Glad you stuck it out for day 2. Sounded like you just about talked yourself out of it. Doing the uncomfortable thing makes legends! Very inspiring!
Man it’s amazing how much one can learn in short time
Nice job!!!
Awesome man! I need to remember to get out and practice some more and I really need to take some courses. I know my riding could definitely improve with a little bit of practice and even more so with an expert grinding me.
Good job Ben. 👍🏻 That is how you improve your skills, by pushing just a little harder. You have come along way dude. 👏🏻
I feel that out of shape bit. Need to get my rear in gear also my friend. love the honesty keep at it! The sore will feel good with a beer later!
Nice one Ben 👍🏻
Thank you for sharing and the inspiration. Signed up for my first off-road course with DC Dirtcamp in northern Virginia. Nothing crazy like this course but will hopefully work my way up in skill…in my late 40s so let’s see how it goes! Been riding almost 20 years but never in the dirt.
Awesome. Shane Watts is a legend. I would love to meet him personally someday.
Related to this video hard. Did a hare scramble class a few weeks ago. Felt way in over my head. Wanted to leave. Somehow felt less confident walking out than walking in even though I learned a lot. But the next time I went riding the same trails I normally take felt way too easy. Thanks for showing the hard parts of riding too.
Good job man! Stepping it up! Progress or die haha you are progressing 💪
Great job dude! I know that was exhausting, coming from another heavyweight. With the heavy bike too! Awesome stuff, makes me want to get out and practice. 👏 🙌
