Repentance is at the core of being born again. This is evident from the teachings of John the Baptist, Jesus and the apostles. If the Holy Spirit comes to the church without repentance, then my question is, "When does it come? The Holy Spirit is given to those who obey HIM. Before I came to know Christ with repentance and being born again, the Holy Spirit was zero in my life.
Don't know about all this, but... I had been raised in the church (2 uncles that were preachers) and went to a secular university and departed far away. Years later saw John3:16 , but always angry about the apostasy of bad hair TV preachers fleecing the flock. The Holy Spirit was given in the New Testament, but I hadn't seen it. I was totally ignorant - I had forgotten my upbringing , it was hidden from me (now I know it was the evil one). So one night I was watching Gospel of John as a movie and realized My God is true! Convicted then the Holy Spirit came upon me and deep sorrow filled my heart. The next day, I picked up a Bible- several as a matter of fact, and understood things I never had before! 'Someone ' had messed with my book! I was totally different- repelled by secular things and their sins. The Bible verses, songs and creeds from my childhood all came back to me. I could read passages and remember them. We have an awesome God! May God bless you many times today!
I could be wrong. but my understanding is that the church has already repented by accepting Christ. that's why they're called the church, the body of Christ.
