Bushfire catastrophe: Wildlife Survivors

  • In the early hours of New Year's Eve 2019, a brutal firestorm swept through Mogo State Forest on the NSW South Coast. It then leapt across a 100m wide firebreak before passing through the village of Mogo, razing many homes and businesses.
I decided to find out if any wildlife had survived the inferno.
For some months before the fires I had been compiling video of the private life of Lyrebirds, using a day-and-night motion sensing wildlife camera, and I was aware of the range of wildlife sharing their habitat. Now, the landscape was changed utterly, and the Lyrebirds’ essential habitat had been completely wiped out, and with it, certainly, most of the Lyrebirds as well.
Setting up my camera at the Lyrebird study site, and with casual sightings, I was able to find only a limited range of the bird, mammal and reptile species that inhabited the forest before the fire. Present were: Swamp Wallaby, Common Wombat, Lace Monitor (Goanna), Sunskink, Wedge-tailed Eagle, Satin Bowerbird, Friarbird, Eastern Yellow Robin and Little Raven, but dozens, probably, hundreds, of species have vanished, probably for years.

Such a beautiful place. I loved NSW when I visited in the 90's such a shame that people damaged the area and all the lovely animals. The people were so nice there. It's the one place I fell in love with. And would have wanted to live. Too bad in the last 20 yrs people and kids just plain evil people did to ruining the Aulstraia for ALl.

Great video, and thank you for it. It was both encouraging and discouraging.
