    Thanks Roger for these exceptional videos, 18 months ago I relocated to the Forster Tuncurry area where I live 3 minutes from my local beach. However, up until recenty I've been unable to fish the beach because of a dodgy hip, but now after receiving a shiny new one I'm now able after many years to beach fish which is one of my favourite forms of fishing. Your videos are such an inspiration and motivation, thank you. And yes I've been successful with some cracking bream recently.

    The importance of being able to “read a beach” is evident right here Roger. A moving bait is not bad really and down here in Victoria there is many occasions where we “battle” side wash currents. The drift does change as gutters fill or abate yet it is important to keep giving it a go and a reward of a fish is often achieved. Great video Roger.

    G'day Roger,
    Thanks for the praise! When I'm travelling to or from a spot i find that clipping the rod holder to the rear strap makes it less conspicuous and less annoying. The beauty of the system is that you can use either strap as you like and, on some beaches where you have to trudge a long way the rear strap position helps, I think. The whole system is about being mobile and fish a spot then move, pack light and don't carry more than you need.

    OK, usually in that situation with a side current flowing along the beach, its heading towards a rip zone. So following it along will bring you to the rip, where the current is flowing out through the surf. Here, the surf will not be pushing you bait along and back to the beach. It will be trying to suck the bait out through the surf. As the current gathers strength toward the & in the rip will scour out the bottom & gather more and more food along the way, creating a deeper channel richer in food. Also, the rip will supress the breakers, making the calmer & clearer. This is where most fish will be feeding & where you want to be. You may even get the rip to carry you bait out to the back of the breakers. At 11:30, you are at the rip & at 16:06 you even say "look at that, my line's getting sucked out", well, that's the rip. It's a corridor of calmer water making a gap in the breakers.
    Get your catch squared away before repositioning your tackle. The rod was safe in the holder already, but you moved it while the dehooked fish was still lying in the wash zone. What if a wave had come in and taken it away while your hands were full of tackle? Then you pull up the rod holder before rebaiting your hooks. Do the rebaiting first, leave the holder where it is & recast to get the bait out in the bite zone again as fast as possible. You not going to catch fish while faffing about with gear, be efficient & get the bait back in the water, where the fish are.

    • @RogerOsborneFishing
      @RogerOsborneFishing  Před rokem +3

      Hi Ken thanks for the commentary. I agree with what you have said. The water from waves washing into a beach always has to escape somewhere and even in those turbulent conditions calmer patches can be found. It is interesting how beach currents work.

    I well remember throwing hand lines into surf much bigger than that. I am sure on the backwash the bait would be uncovered. Yet we still caught large snappers.
    Clearly the fish come into the backwash to feed. I have often asked fishermen with surf rods if they are, in fact, casting past the feed line.

You have beach worms in NSW and there’s plenty here too so I guess that means they’re all the way through. Free bait at low tide. Awesome.
    I’d love to fish Waitpinga with you.
    How about I pick you up in Sydney and we fish all the way through Victoria right to SA; then keep going. We could keep going if you felt like it right through to the middle of the great Australian Bight. Yalata for some prime butterfish? Drop me a line any time…

    I've learnt over the years that when one arrives at the beach and you are faced with a horrible sidewash turn around and go home as majority of times you'll likely to catch a cold sooner than a fish. I am however surprised that you caught a fish in that mess. Try putting dry sand onto the worm while baiting up, you'll find it much easier to thread it on.

    Fishing in big seas is not productive , many Asians die each year in Australia fishing of the rocks in big seas . Big seas force the fish to the bottom and out wide .
