Balboa Stadium was built in 1914 as part of the 1915 Pan American Exposition. It was San Diego’s first full-fledged stadium and cost 135,000 and real horsepower was used in construction. It was to be the site of many landmark events including President Woodrow Wilson’s 1919 visit. 50,000 packed the stadium to hear him urge approval of a peace treaty to end World War 1. In 1927 Charles Lindbergh returned to a hero’s welcome two years after his historic New York to Paris flight in The Spirit of St. Louis. The 1932 Olympics were held in Los Angeles, but the equestrian events were here. 50,000 were on hand when President Franklin Delano Roosevelt came to town to dedicate the City County Administration Center. In 1961 it was enlarged from 22,000 seat capacity to 33,000 to accommodate the arrival of professional football. It was the home of The Chargers until 1966 when they moved to the brand new San Diego Stadium. Many concerts were held there including The Beatles in 1965. News 8’s Dave Cohen reported in August 1979 that the stadium was going to be demolished because it didn’t meet earthquake standards. A new, much smaller stadium was built and stands today as a football and soccer venue. MORE: www.cbs8.com/article/news/loc...

Wow!! I never realized Balboa Stadium held so much history!
I went to a few great rock concerts there, back in the 70's!! And Balboa Naval Hospital has always been near and dear to my heart.
My Father was admitted there for a few weeks, before he passed away there, in 1974. And speaking of that small parking lot... I remember one day, just as I was parking there, hearing on the radio that Mama Cass had died. And then, I worked there, at Balboa Hospital in the 90's.

I wish they would have preserved the front.

This stadium hosted San Diego's only professional sports title.

My parents took me to concerts here when I was a toddler. We could bring blankets and coolers. I have pictures of their van club, "Ye Ol' Trucker." I want to make a Facebook page because I feel it would be a historic page. I just sit on these pics. They're amazing.

I keep thinking of the AFL and Lance Alworth. It was this team that was the forerunner of the current day QB-centric passing attack. I remember watching the games on TV and the AFL was so much more fun than the NFL. Growing up near Pittsburgh, San Diego seemed like another world. And I never forgot that the Chargers played at Balboa Stadium. How can you ever forget a name like that?

The great Balboa Stadium.. as fellow San Diegan, can't believe there's so much great history written on that field.! I played sports for my beloved San Diego High school and I never thought that I was stepping on historic field grounds..Go Cavers!

Interesting that the Olympics equestrian events were held in San Diego in 1932, and also in 1984 when some horse events were held at Fairbanks Ranch country club.

The Chiefs played the Chargers in the last AFL game ever played at Balboa Stadium. The Chiefs won that day 27-17. Then several weeks later in January 1967, the Chiefs played up the road at the LA Coliseum in Super Bowl 1, unfortunately losing to the Packers 35-10.
But Balboa Stadium was good to the Chargers in the 6-seasons they played there, as they won enough games to be in the AFL Championship game for 3-straight seasons, winning the 1963 AFL Championship over Boston after racking up 51 points.

As I recall there was only a small parking lot next to the stadium. Wish it was still there though for other events. The Chargers could have moved back there while a new stadium should have been built for them in Mission Valley.

There was a plan to make a new stadium still in San Diego and u were able to vote but ig not enough people did and it didnt pass

@@itsd1ego I believe the Charger stadium vote was for a downtown site next to Petco Park which the owner decided he liked more than the city's proposed Mission Valley site.

@@rkgsd I figured out why it didn’t pass. Dean Spanos wanted to build a new stadium in San Diego but doing so would increase taxes by a billion dollars. That’s not an exaggeration btw that was the amount. And obviously no one in their right mind is gonna vote for that. He wanted the city of San Diego to pay for it and not himself
