I'll never understand why they teach backers to take lineman on heads up. Giving up 100 pounds, why would you play his game? Shedding is not the way. Leverage, leverage, leverage...

Because they cant be avoided all the time. You WILL get caught, out of position, without momentum, and Linebackers need to still perform.

Bthorn 50 I agree you can’t always get leverage but you should still train to get leverage and as if you have levergae

@@gmart3290 Linebackers need tp play as a group. No backer should have to take on 300 lbs and then tackle a back. It's done and it's great, but it's not the percentage play. Backers need to play as a pack and the first fitter's job is to cause the tackle not necessarily make the tackle...

Well, I train backers and my system is based on leverage. You have to get to where the lineman doesn't want you to be. He's got two distinct advantages, size and knowledge of where the ball is going. To keep the ball in the box, guys have to spill it back. to spill it back you have to take outside leverage. If they're going outside zone and the tackle releases to you, you have to attack through his center and out of his play side shoulder. Getting there will force the ball carrier to cut back into the teeth of the defense. This is where the big hits happen and it a glorious thing to behold. If he stays outside it's an easy tackle and often a holding call. The goal is three backers flowing to the ball, all with different jobs, but playing off of each other. Here's a young player who does this very well, but all backers must be on the same page or you get gashed. It's a very simple and effective system. czcams.com/video/56cLryVDRyg/video.html
