The drums on this was one of the most sampled drum sounds in early hip hop. This song was a re-working of a song by the same name originally recorded by Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy in 1929. The beat of this is hypnotic; you have to just sit back and go with it. Since you've discovered Led Zeppelin, have you played any of their songs for friends who don't know them? If so, what have they thought? Please do more Zep; pick one at random, Zep fans will show up.

There was a lot of production used to get the sound - hanging mic in a stairwell, a reverse echo - the guitar solo and the harmonica were recorded at one tempo and then slowed down. Led Zeppelin rarely performed this live because they couldn't produce that sound. They used to drop Bonham and his kit below the stage and it still lacked the sound.
This song is actually a 1929 song about the 1927 great Mississippi Flood!

First time I heard a Zeppelin album I thought ' how can one band have 4 members that are all as good as this ? ' . And the material was just better than anyone else's too. All the UK bands were playing rearranged versions of blues songs but Zeppelin did it in a more interesting way, and plus the original material they wrote was incredible. I've still never heard another band that moved me the way they did. To me they are the benchmark of hard rock music based from the blues

This song is a cover of the 1928 original by classic Delta Blues duo Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy.
They wrote it after the disastrous Mississippi River flood that displaced a lot of poor farmers, many of them black.
The loss of everything forced many of the farmers to move north to Chicago, where they started to take jobs in the railyards, feed-lots and meat-packing plants of the South Side.
Those farmers sorta laid the foundation for the Great Migration of black folks from the Delta after WWII, when mechanical cotton-pickers started to replace the deeply oppressive share-cropper system that, essentially, reduced them to slavery in all but name, regardless of what the Reconstruction Amendments said.
The original is a fine Blues tune, and Zeppelin changed it around to give it a hard-rockin' Blues sound.

      @@dubzer0649 You're quite welcome. :)
You should listen to the original, too.
      It's available on CZcams.
Interesting note, Memphis Minnie died a very poor woman, and her family couldn't afford to put a stone on her grave.
Years later, slide-guitar player and Blues singer Bonnie Raitt learned of that, and bought a tombstone.
You should give Bonnie Raitt a listen, too. She made some great music with John Lee Hooker and other old Blues artists. :)

Probably in my top ten Zep tunes. At one point you praise the guitar which is actually Robert Plant's harmonica. Original version by Memphis Minnie & Kansas Joe McCoy, 1929. Blues, baby!

When The Levy Breaks is--in my opinion--by far the BEST SONG on that album, much better than Stairway To Heaven, which I even rank behind Misty Mountain Hop. I probably rank WTLB as my favorite Led Zep song of all time, and there are quite a few great ones. While all contributions are great, it's an absolute masterpiece by John Bonham, the drummer.

Check out Kashmir. It's a top 3 Zeppelin song. Maybe their best, but they have so many great songs and sounds... how many other bands have a legit top 50 songs? How many other bands put out a 4 disc, greatest hits album?

The most awesome thing about Led Zep is that they really did not care about releasing singles for chart success. They focused on creating great albums and great concerts.
No Top 10 singles yet they are regarded as the greatest hard rock band ever!
    No shallow “pop”

Disco below beat me to it but you can listen to Jimmy talk about the drum set up in the clip from "it might get loud" and they show the hall where they set up the drums! One of the most bluesy songs they ever did and it's PERFECTION, another vibe is "No Quarter" = btw if you loved Robert playing the shit out of that harmonica you should also check out Ozzy and Sabbath doing "The Wizard" in rehearsal - it's so awesome seeing an older band still kick so much ass!

Truth is, I think we were lied to back then. We were told by our elders, classical and jazz aficionados that our music was primitive, and without merit. I kind of believed it. But now, at 61, I realize that was a lie.
