I love this. Cooking should bring people together. South of the U.S.A, Spain and Korea have similar, very similar, "burnt rice" dishes. People should look for similarities that can bring people together and cuisine is a perfect medium for that.

Carolina Gold rice he's using is not an Asian variety of rice but a variety of oryza glabiremma which is a species of rice indigenous to Africa, and domesticated by Africans independently from the more widely known oryza sativa Asian species of rice. Europeans found Africans in places like West Africa growing vast fields of rice and took seeds and experienced growers to their colonies in the Americas. For the first couple centuries a variety of African rice that became Carolina Gold was the major rice grown in the US.

This is Gullah Red Rice. Sean says a "Black skillet dish passed down from generation to generation". No mention of the origin!
Toasting the rice in butter, very arab. Rice is always toasted in some sort of fat before cooking.

I wish you'd share your recipes for these things. I seldom watch them because it's just too frustrating to see something delicious and have no recipe to refer to. And this looks fantastic. Sigh.
Just watch and listen. You'll probably screw it up the first time. I did. But now I find it easy.

Born and raised in the Lowcountry and lived in Spain. Paella is a rice dish but that doesn't make it like red rice. This is not like any version of red rice I've seen. The sausage is cooked WITH it over time, he rushed it.
Exactly, I was raised in Savannah and my grandmother always cooked everything first and then added the rice. Even now I add the rice after everything else has been cooked to pick up the flavors and then cook it. I prefer the oven(sealed with foil and no peaking) whereas my grandmother could leave it on the stove until it was perfect!
We always made it on the stove. Chopped onions/garlic/bell peppers/carrots, then add the ground beef, then add the rice, water and V8 juice and simmer for 25 to30 mins on low. Always been a cheap/ Easy meal that could feed a family in short amount of time.

@@dkland1980 ground beef adds to the overall meal. Kinda extends it and makes it easier to feed the family without blowing up the budget. I got a friend from Hilton Head SC that uses half and half ground dear meat and 70/30 ground beef. It's so versatile you can dam near add any meat to it except fish.

Ain't how we made it either. It's always been a cheap quick/easy/cheap meal that could feed a family. Ground beef, chopped onions/bell pepper/carrots, white rice, and V8 juice. Simmer for 25mins and get the hot sauce!!!

I was born and raised in Savannah and I was looking at this like, wtf? I know the origins of red rice which is a Gullah geechie form of the west African jollof rice like you said. This is some other ish. This rice is not even red lol
If you wanna eat shit homestyle rice with no flavor or texture, go for it. Those of us with a healthy palatte would easily take this over your shitty cooking, any day of the week.

The chef did a variation on what the posters know as the TRADITIONAL way the dish is made in the Low County. Nothing wrong with pointing that out--and several posters who live there have pointed out the difference. Given that I'm not from there, I'm happy to find out the difference.
Nothing like the Red Rice I grew up on. It was always a easy meal that could feed the family on the cheap!!!
First heat up a Skillet, then add your carrots/bell peppers/ and celery.
Once the carrots are starting to soften up add chopped onions and garlic.
Once the onions start to go translucent add your ground beef ( ground beef can be cooked separate and drained of fat if you want)
Once the ground beef is going good, add rice and V8 juice.
Several minutes later add a Cup or so of water and simmer for 25 to 30 minutes. Once the water has evaporated dinner is ready.
In my family we usually add half a bottle of Tabasco and some chopped jalapenos ( we like it hot)
That is the Red Rice I grew up with, and all my friends had some variation on that recipe. Funny thing is, every time I bring up Red rice to someone not from the low country, they have no idea what I'm talking about 😂🤣😂. Some people even add red beans of some kind to extend the meal and make it go further for cheap.
